KSLG to interview disgruntled cop blogger

A blog by an anonymous Eureka Police officer got some rough reviews recently here on the Humboldt Herald.

The blog — which centers on criticism of Chief Garr Nielsen - was called “junior high,” and “lord of the flies” by our readers, who were disappointed by what they saw there.

You can tune into KSLG (94.1) on Tuesday, April 22 at 8:30am to hear an interview with the blogger known as Frank Serpico.

It’s probably safe to assume the blogger’s voice will be modified like in the days of Capt. Buhne.

Perhaps this disturbing look onto our bloggers-in-blue will inspire citizens to test their knowledge of rights during police encounters.

UPDATE: There’s more on the rift at EPD in today’s Times-Standard.  For some reason, reading Officer Terry Liles’s complaints of civil rights violations rings a little hollow.

That’s why I read blogs… to get my daily dose of dysfunction.

  2. Gregg Says:

That interview will actually be on John Matthew’s show on KSLG, 94.1 FM.

Oh great, this is like the Spanish inquisition or Witch trials, the accused is charged with heinous crimes and the accuser is kept anonymous. Good job KHUM! sounds like a stunt FOX news would pull. Patrick I know you to be an honorable person, why would you condone this on your otherwise respected station??? Blogger Frank Serpico, had his license to kill (swat) taken away from him, not to mention all that overtime, now he’s throwing a tantrum and crying just like little spoiled child. Come on Frank and Bucky, Man up and own up!

When does a cop become a civil right supporter?

When its his rights coming under attack.

  8. Heraldo Says:

Perhaps. But I have a hard time believing Liles’s rights are under attack.

He’s lucky he’s not in jail himself. And he certainly needs psychiatric treatment. He should be kissing Garr’s feet really.

  10. Jane Doe Says:

Liles’ rights to lots of overtime are under attack. Isn’t that in the constitution somewhere?

  11. Heraldo Says:

Heh. Of course. What was I thinking?

I don’t think it is the practices and procedures of the cops that is at issue. I think this is typical tweeker behavior. Next week they’ll have a new bag and be all lovey-duby.

Until we refuse to except this night-riders model of law enforcement and crimes against lifestyles, we will keep having fewer and fewer people who truly wish to cooperate with the enforcers - including other of prospective cops. Keeping the peace requires peace officers, not the law enforcers we are currently oppressed by. They all should have their guns taken away - and maybe a few life sentences for the ones who murder kids when nobody is looking.

There used to be video of the coroners inquest at the times standards web site. I don’t know if it is still there, and with the obnoxious pop ups on their site I’ll leave it to the strong of heart to venture in to see. If its not let me know and I’ll post a picture for you.

This blog does a good job of praising the T-S but rarely criticizes the paper. I know the Eureka Reporter has its faults, but there are good stories that rarely, if ever, get play on this blog.

The Humboldt Herald, being the unofficial spokesperson for the Times-Standard since 2006.

  17. Anonymous Says:

Well, yeah, because the ER has about as much credibility as the Humboldt Advocate these days. Completely wacky editorials undermine any good work the reporters do.

  18. Heraldo Says:

I would compile a list of criticisms of the Times-Standard that have appeared on this blog, including the one currently prominent on the main page, but I don’t want to short circuit your little brain.

  19. Anonymous Says:

Well this is about the level of decorum and professionalism we’ve come to expect from Lost Coast Communications/KSLG in general and John Matthews in particular, ever-reaching deeper into gutter journalism. I thought they might have turned a corner when they flipped the switch off on the lame-ass biased Hank Sims/Kevin Hoover hot-air-hour, but Pat Clearly always knows he’s got to keep the slime flowing to keep the local liblab powers happy.

  20. robash141 Says:

It is Indeed Ironic to see these EPD cops who are so right -wing reactionary in most of their attitudes ,be so quick to claim civil service and union protections. Liberal ideas if there ever were one.
Some cops love to complain about how no one loves them and no one appreciates them, however
I can’t Imagine many other workplaces where such gross insubordination would be tolerated.
If it weren’t for the protection of the police union , “Frank “and “Bucky” would be out on their asses. Deservedly so in my opinion.

Just about Any working person who made their employer look as bad as those two make the EPD would have excactly the same thing happen to them.

  21. ShirleyValentine Says:

What are the names of the former SWAT team? Reading various comments here and elsewhere makes them sound like Vic Mackie’s team on “The Shield”, which I highly doubt.
Whether or not everything posted on “Above the Law” Blog is true, there is something seriously wrong going on within EPD. Officers, for the most part, take care of situations in-house. The public nature of all this is disturbing, especially when I read that the new Chief spent the last year in Oregon basically banned to the dungeon.
    What a clusterfuck!

  22. Anonymous Says:

At least in Eureka you don’t get pulled over willy-nilly. Arcata cops have made minor infractions their livelihood. Expired tags, failure to make a full and complete stop, driving 30 in a 25 zone, you name it. If there’s any amount of officer discretion involved, you’re toast. It’s as if crime no real crime exists in the city.

So, at least in Eureka the cops are going after people pulling knives and guns. Well, and homeless riding bicycles, but I don’t ride a bike.

  23. Heraldo Says:

There may be something wrong with EPD, but that was evident long before Chief Nielsen came to town.

  24. Chris Crawford Says:

All of the cop bashers soon change their tune when disaster strikes, or someone breaks into their home, or they get assaulted on the street.

Our public safety is provided by a lot of selfless, underpaid folks who work nights, weekends, holidays, 24/7/365 and risk their lives to protect life and property.

The cop blogger enjoys the same 1st amendment rights that all the whiners have, only he’s earned the right to complain even if I disagree with him.

  25. OffTheRez Says:

ShirleyValentine…Vickie Mackie and the boyz would be considered highly trained compare to Frank and Bucky. They were very well trained at cleaning their weapons and shooting them. Chief Nielsen must have come to town and taken one look at that bunch of overtime sucking psychos and pulled the plug. Good riddance.

  26. Jane Doe Says:

Gee Chris. And here I thought rights were something you didn’t have to earn. Who knew?

  27. OffTheRez Says:

    Chris Crawford Says:

“Our public safety is provided by a lot of selfless, underpaid folks who work nights, weekends, holidays, 24/7/365 and risk their lives to protect life and property.”
    VERY TRUE!

“The cop blogger enjoys the same 1st amendment rights that all the whiners have, only he’s earned the right to complain even if I disagree with him.”
Frank & Bucky are the biggest whiners of all. All they’ve earned is the right to be Outed and rebuked by the the Public.

  28. Jane Doe Says:

Does Chris think other people don’t have the right to complain if he doesn’t agree with them? What a pompous statement that was.

  29. Anonymous Says:

Frank and Bucky differ in one respect from most other blog sites. They restrict almost any opinion which does not agree with their narrow biased view of the world. Bottom line is that EPD has been a mess for years. What other city of similar size has had five officer involved shootings in the period of eighteen months? NONE!!!! This is just the most egregious exampe of what was wrong with EPD. Then toss in the overtime abuses, and the fact that there was a total disconnect from the public, combined with a complete lack of leadership and you have a big time dysfunctional place. Come out from behind the Redwood curtain and into the modern era of law enforcement and you will see just how screwed up this place was.

  30. puma Says:

No matter what Frank, Bucky and their ilk would have you believe, the fact is, their blog is cowardly, like they are, is full of lies, is totally one-sided, and does NOT reflect the majority opinion at EPD. If there was anything of merit in there, we would have seen a mass exodus out the door instead of a steady stream of folks going into the chief’s office to apologize and get on board.

  31. Jane Doe Says:

What really bothered me was the nasty rumors about Nielsen. We have all heard stories about how “incestuous” our police department is, rumors of affairs between officers, etc; but since none of them could possibly have any factual knowledge of whether there is a sexual relationship, this is unconscionable, especially because of the families of the people they are gossiping about. If they wanted to air their grievances about how he treated them or what he said to them, that is one thing. The rumors are something else entirely.

  32. Anonymous Says:

Bottom line, never trust a gossiper. The police officers undermined their position by being filthy despicable people with their gossip. If they’re capable of that, what else?

  33. Mick Belker Says:

Why is everyone locked into this overtime thing? A majority of the “overtime abuses” that all the mis-and-un-informed folks are talking about was forced and mandatory to cover shifts due to a lack of personnel. It’s simple math, now that they have hired all the new folks and can cover the shifts, the overtime goes down. A lot of the staff is happier now that they don’t have to work so many hours.

  34. Rose Says:

You’re gonna bash John Matthews? He’s done some great interviews. Are you kidding me? And Hank and Kevin’s show? Are you serious?

Yeah, someone set fire to my property and when a cop came by he said “What do you want me to do?”. Well, I didn’t expect much and got exactly what I expected.

Sure, we need cops and we need pest exterminators too. Both jobs have occupational hazards and use dangerous materials. And both come in after the damage is done. Personally, I’d give much more to have an honest car mechanic, a knowledgeable doctor, and an efficient handyman than see a cop on every corner.

  40. Anonymous Says:

Does anyone have a picture we can post here so “Eureka Citizen” will know how to ambush Officer Liles successfully? You are playing with fire, “Citizen,” and you should stop while you are ahead.

It finally comes out the ThePlazoid is tad. I should have suspected as much.

Part of what is wrong with Eureka is that we never see a police officer enforcing the laws against red-light-running, parking backward, throwing garbage into the sloughs, etc. Like it or not, Giuliani in NYC proved that by enforcing the little laws, the big problems often solve themselves.

More bright thoughts will be provided for you all in just a little while.

Right Qwerty. Anyone who criticizes them is a cop hater and the city is full of us. That explains their arrogant attitudes when dealing with us cop haters who just happen to pay their salaries. 61. Anonymous Says:

Nah, just good old fashioned frothing about the mouth while discussing cops counts as cop hate.

I’m not sure who is pissed in Eureka. The only people you see on TV are the family members and the usual crowd of historical cop haters. Hold a rally and have 500 people show up and I’ll believe you have something more than a case of rabies.

  68. Anonymous Says:

The reaction from the EPD to having new leadership is exactly what we saw in the DA’s office when Gallegos took over.

In both cases, the deadwood didn’t like being cleared out, but it is ironic how poorly the people who spent years abusing their authority (be it rouge cops or bad DDA likes Allison Jackson), reacted to the authority of the people. Be is an elected DA or a chief appointed by an elected city council.

They can dish it out, but they sure can’t take it.

  69. Anonymous Says:

You seem to know what you are talking about. Can you tell me why the new D.A. did what he did to the C.A.S.T. unit?

  70. Yo... Says:

PVG personal conflict aside, I havent seen anyone besides anon 241 say that Alison Jackson was a “bad dda type”…

pvg had and has every right to run his office as he sees fit, until the voters decide they want someone else, or he decides he’s had enough…

that being said, by most reasonable accounts, the dda’s that Paul inherited were a good crew…

  71. Jane Doe Says:

I wasn’t following the local scene during that time. Why did she get fired?

  72. Heraldo Says:

Here’s is Jackson’s ridiculous explanation for why she was fired.

As a side note, Eric Kirk’s letter to the editor in response to Jackson’s allegations played a role in him starting his blog less than 2 weeks later.

  73. Anonymous Says:

Heraldo, what about it was ridiculous?

  74. Heraldo Says:

    Her theories about Ed Denson.

  75. Jane Doe Says:

Thanks Heraldo. It does seem like it would be very difficult working with people who tried to get you recalled. That story about Denson seems ludicrous.

  76. Jane Doe Says:

Also, it was the defendent’s wife who turned in that falsified prescription, not Denson, according to Ms. Jackson. How would he know if they had gotten a new, undated rx or not?

  77. Heraldo Says:

    It’s a fishy story.

  78. Rose Says:

Well, Jane and heraldo don’t like Jackson. Surprise surprise.

Did you know, Jane, that she never lost a case? Put child molesters away for hundreds of years? They call it the Century Club.

Whether you liked Farmer or not, he had put together a dynamite team of prosecutors. Now, all but three of the experienced prosecutors are gone. Those are the people who worked for YOU. Not for Paul. For the people.

What’ve you got now? A whole new crop of dynamite prosecutors? Uh uh. Even yougofree.com Schwartz is gone.

    Pathetic.

  79. Heraldo Says:

I can appreciate her work putting away child molesters and still think her story about Denson is bunk.

  80. Anonymous Says:

Heraldo, fishy stories are usually short on detail and don’t add up. The story you linked to is explicit in its detail and makes sense. Now that some of the coworkers the Journal interviewed have left the office, I’d like to see what they have to say given that they have no reason to worry about their job security.

  81. Heraldo Says:

    You’re welcome to your opinion.

  82. Anonymous Says:

Well, “fishy” isn’t exactly a coherent argument. It simply reveals your bias, nothing more.

  83. Heraldo Says:

    I’m entitled to my opinion.

  84. Jane Doe Says:

That’s great that she never lost a case. We got our money’s worth. However, I can’t imagine having to trust people like her and Dikeman after their dirty campaign in the recall election or understand why they would want to work under a man they held in such contempt. He was elected, they were hired. When the office isn’t “big enough” for them all, the hired ones are the ones who have to go.

  85. Anonymous Says:

Interesting argument Jane, but compare the DA’s office situation to EPD. At EPD there is clearly a problem with the service being provided to the public. What was the problem in public service in the DA’s office? It seems the prosecutors were doing a great job, and yet they had to go?

  86. Jane Doe Says:

The people elected Gallegos and the former prosecutors admittedly were very unhappy about it. Some of them actively worked for his recall. Would you trust them in your office if you were Gallegos? Wasn’t there also something about memos being stolen from the office and circulated? I can’t remember the details.

  87. Heraldo Says:

They were emails stolen from Tim Stoen’s computer.

  88. Jane Doe Says:

Yeah, I think I would be getting rid of the disgruntled and untrustworthy prosecutors too, no matter how good they are.

  89. Heraldo Says:

    It certainly seems reasonable.

  90. Jane Doe Says:

Was it ever discovered or made public who was involved, Heraldo?

  91. Heraldo Says:

That part is still a mystery.

  92. Rose Says:

And many think it was Stoen himself who ‘leaked’ them. He was fond of stunts.

  93. Rose Says:

So now Jane, what have you got? You must be so proud.

  94. Heraldo Says:

Yeah, Stone probably felt there wasn’t enough seething hatred toward him in Eureka so he leaked his own email to fan the flames.

  95. Jane Doe Says:

I doubt that “many” or ANY think that Stoen leaked them, but it gave the thief deniability which is apparently all they needed. I’ll bet Gallegos knows who stole them even if he can’t “prove it” adequately to make an accusation.

    Proud of what, Rose?

  96. Jane Doe Says:

What is Rose’s connection to this story besides her DA obsession? Was she part of the recall effort as well?

    A weakling.
No wonder he is afraid of getting his ass kicked by teens and little old ladies.

    What a loser.

  98. Not A Native Says:

I actually listened to the broadcast. “Serpico” made the same complaints that are on the blog with no specific examples or even allegation that the public has been poorly served by the Chief’s decisions, only that some employees don’t like the decisions or how they were announced.

Mostly the complaint aired was that people with “many years of experience” were being reassigned and sidelined by the Chief without prior notice or explanation given to the rest of the staff. Serpico also allowed that one of the blog authors, Bucky Grace, is a alter ego composite of private blog messages Serpico receives.

Matthews said that Nielson declined to be interviewed immediately after “Serpico” but he will interview Chief Nielsen on a future show (I think Thursday?).

My personal take is that despite the voice disguising, the cadence and style of “Serpico”s speaking was that of a woman. She repeatedly used the phrase “fly on the wall” referring to overhearing private conversations. That expression is commonly used by women but not often by men. The timing and choice of which words to stress also suggested a woman to me. The way she responded seemed to me like a person familiar with addressing the media. Matthews asked some pointed questions but she was unruffled, deflected them, and stayed on her message.

  99. Resident X Says:

So will Matthews now make a habit of giving the bully pulpit to all manner and sort of anonymous internet gossipers/bloggers? Or is this just a special privilege that we grant to disgruntled cops?

  100. Jane Doe Says:

I didn’t listen to the program. Did “he” repeat the rumors on air that they have been spreading about Nielsen and the dispatcher?

  101. Heraldo Says:

I listened to it and Matthews made clear his skepticism of any problems at EPD based on the general info supplied by blogger Frank.

  102. Heraldo Says:

Yes, Jane, they talked about that. Frank tried to say it in a round about way and Matthews asked why he wouldn’t just come out and say it on the radio like he does on the blog. Frank said he was hesitant to make allegations about sexual relationships because “you’d have to be a fly on the wall” to know for sure.

  103. puma Says:

There is no truth to the rumor is why! That will come out when the investigation into the sexual harassment complaint is returned, especially since investigators had access to all emails, cell phone records etc. etc. You notice no one has come out with any proof at all, which means it was a lame attempt on the bloggers part to throw everything in there they could and see what would stick.

  104. puma Says:

And from “Not a Native’s” description it sounds like crybaby, Dee Dee, who thought she would retire as the queen bee in dispatch, when, in reality, most folks there hate her guts. Or maybe it was her sister, potty-mouth Pammy, who, as the city manager’s assistant has been quite a “fly on the wall” herself when the cm has meetings in his office.

  111. Jane Doe Says:

I just listened to the podcast and all I can say is WOW! Even Mathews appeared to be having some problems with the assumptions that “Frank” was jumping to, saying “and….?” after it finished. I sincerely hope this isn’t a cop and agree with NAN that this is probably a woman based on speaking rhythms and word choices. A GOSSIPY woman.

  112. anon Says:

I’d be surprised if the chief agreed to be on the show. y should he respond to a bunch of lies and one-sided crap? the bloggers say they are helping epd the only way they can, but they are really hurting their cause & a lot of innocent folks in the process.
