Fuelish foul-up

Leslie BuchananChannel 3 news stuck a strangely detached foot into the camera’s unforgiving mouth Wednesday night when it reported on the “biodiesel spill” near Salmon Creek. Clean-up crews are using absorbent booms to mop up the “biodiesel,” repeated reporter Leslie Buchanan.

Good thing diesel dope growers are so environmentally conscious they fill 1000 gallon tanks with biodiesel rather than the real thing…

Blogger Kym continues to cover the spill with interviews and photos. She’ll be relieved to know it was only “biodiesel.”

</end sarcasm>

The diesel spill, if you haven’t heard, is really bad.  And it’s not 1000 gallons of french fry fuel causing noxious fumes, it’s red diesel, which is “only slightly different chemically from regular automotive diesel fuel.”

The spill was first reported on May 16 and has maintained a place in the headlines ever since.  So how did Channel 3 get it wrong?  Was it a:

  1. Misreading of the teleprompter?
  2. Misunderstanding of the facts?
  3. Strange conflation of biodiesel with massive pot grows?

Who cares as long as Leslie says it.

H, you’re doing this country a disservice when you invoke Her name without the prefix Sultry.

Really now, Sultry Leslie Buchanan deserves, nay, commands your respect.

    She’s auditioning for Fox News.

Fox makes errors? CNN spelled Ted Kennedy’s affliction “seziure” in its crawl.

FOX News readers make a factual error in every broadcast they make, because they are required to say: “Fair and Balanced.”

  6. Lucky Chucky Says:

Blame it on the same person that helped you spell “inconsistency” wrong?

An odd but genuine question: Biodiesel lacks the toxic chemical soup of diesel, but if 1000 gallons of that stuff had spilled, what would it do? Is it still harmful to water courses to some degree. Would it biodegrade? Smother fish redds? Give squirrels high cholesterol?

Any real (and non-snarky) information out there?

  8. Andrew Bird Says:

In fairness to Leslie. I don’t watch channel 3 news very often. But I believe Leslie is an anchor. Most likely it’s not her reporting; she’s reading copy that someone else wrote.

Does Channel 3 have pure talking heads? No. Sultry Leslie Buchanan pulls her wait around the studio and in the field.

  10. Andrew Bird Says:

I don’t know. They list several reporters on their website. For all I know Leslie, like most journalists, holds FOX News in low regard. It was not fair of me to make that comment without making it clear it was a dig at FOX News, and not Leslie. Anyway, all journalists make mistakes. Even the best of them.

I remember a few years back that Jack Daniels spilled a couple a thousand gals of whiskey into the creek. Massive fish kill. Major fines and pee pee whacks. I know people here who would have been down at the creek when the plume came by.

But those fish went out happy with a great buzz, I bet :-)
