Little new info on pot busts

UPDATE: Listen to the interview here.

FBI spokesman Joseph Schadler spoke with KSLG’s John Matthews this morning to give an update on the Federal investigations into marijuana busts conducted across Humboldt County Tuesday.

A complete list of locations targeted in the raids will be released later today.  Areas include Shelter Cove, Whitethorne, Phillipsville, Miranda, Arcata, and Redway.

Investigations will continue today.  Once a search warrant is executed researches will remain at the site until they seize all items listed on the warrants, Schadler said.

The one person taken into custody yesterday was arrested for assaulting a federal officer.

Some people were home when officers arrived to serve warrants, Schadler said. In most cases they were interviewed but not arrested.

Schadler said he couldn’t give a lot of details because of on-going investigations.

He said he didn’t know how much the “Operation Southern Sweep” will cost.  “I don’t crunch numbers,” Schadler said.

federal national gaurd members have been used to fight fires here before. its not unheard of to have feds fight fires….

this shows what our current administartions priorities are…..sending our guard oversees to secure oil fields while fires burn here at home. sending keystone cops looking for pot plants while we already have the highest incarceration rate in the WORLD. now they want to jail more pot smokers?

Hello, Northern California ASA Members and Friends.

DEA agents and other federal agencies are very active in Humboldt County right now, and medical cannabis patients and caregivers are at risk there. It is very important that ASA collect confidential information about instances in which the DEA arrests or seizes medicine from patients or caregivers. We can often help these victims and their attorneys, and the data we collect is crucial to providing credible information to elected officials about ongoing DEA interference and intimidation in California. Similar reporting was instrumental in persuading Congressman John Conyers to challenge DEA tactics earlier this year. Help us build opposition again by getting information to our Legal Services Coordinator Noah Mamber at noah@safeaccessnow.org or by calling toll free (888) 929-4367.

ASA offers free legal support to medical cannabis patients and their attorneys every day. You can read more about those services at

Also Hoover was writing about grow houses in Arcata, which are so fucking blatant that any idiot could figure out where/what they are doing, which isn’t even what this action is about. The new updates confirm that they are bringing down ONE BIG PLAYER and don’t care at all about your precious 215 “medicine”.

I don’t think Kevin Hoover is the source of all this drama, Heraldo for that matter. The feds know what they know, despite the reporters, we all know it!! Ask some young kid on the East coast, they have heard of Humboldt, as the source of the best bud around, or at least that is the assumption. i applaud heraldo, for his efforts to warn this community. I know he is taking a lot of judgements, but I think he deserves some recognization for being the only one to try to prepare our community for this attack. So , I would like to thank Heraldo, for his efforts. No one could have known exactly what would go down, but at least he tried!! I am proud of you Heraldo, so many were skeptical, but you did your job well.

The wonderful inflatable sweep totals! Per the T-S:

“According to the U.S. Attorney General Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the county-wide marijuana raids that started Tuesday have so far led to the seizure of between $25 and $60 million worth of marijuana.”

Pretty good off of 28 warrants. That calculates out to about somewhere between $1 and $2 million per warrant. Like that house in Sunnybrae. There must have been one million dollars in pot there alone! And just at one point in time!

Sheesh, even in Arcata, most houses don’t cost that much. Maybe I could sell my one-bedroom to the Feds for just a half a million, cheap! Think of all the millions of dollars in crime they could prevent (by their accounting methods) by buying my house and absolutely assuring that it will never, ever become a grow house!

In fact, they should buy up all the houses in the entire city of Arcata. By their accounting methods, that would probably pencil out to at least $25 to 60 BILLION in crime guaranteed to be stopped! If they bought even more houses, they could exceed the national gross domestic product in stopped crime!

Just guessing as to the cause of your problem with Hoover and putting it together with the context of your comments here Kate. Hoover was very insulting to People Project in his editorials, saying things like “First, they aren’t serious. PP has made no formal proposal for the campground they’re supposedly demanding. No location, funding or management plan has been proposed. They offer nothing to work with other than slogans and admonitions.

The People Project’s half-assed lies are as dense as their proposals are vapid. In PP land, the police are all thugs, the City Council oppressors and the news media complicit. It has to be that way for them, because then they’re positioned as the valiant freedom-fighters.”

He went on to say that People Project is just looking for a big lawsuit.

Kevin is ambitious. He started his own newspaper – a risky undertaking. Stepped out on his own and made it work in one of the toughest media markets in the country. Eeked out a living and beat the odds.

Ya oughtta try it sometime, Kate. And you also ought to think that there are lots and lots of people who think differently than you do – people who have had it with the growhouses, the fires, the pitbulls, the guns, the crime, and the lack of housing. Not to mention the destruction of property.

Is it reporters jobs to trespass on peoples properties, spray paint houses that they think are grow houses or send threatening letters to home owners? He had no idea whether there were actual grows going on at those locations, or whether they were legal 215 grows or not. He’s a reporter, not a police officer or a federal agent. He’s as much as a criminal as the growers themselves. If I lived in Arcata and caught him snooping around my property, I would shoot first and ask questions later. I can’t believe people in Arcata are so against pot growers that they would support Kevin’s illegal activity and call him an ambitious crusader. He is not responsible for the raids this week, but that still doesn’t excuse him for what he is done. Every time I see a stack of his crappy papers sitting around, I will take them all and burn or throw them away. I can’t believe anyone would pay a dollar for his shitty propaganda rag anyway. Let’s make it so no one can.

A copy of the letter he sent to home owners is on the Arcata Eye’s website I believe. Not sure about what house got spray painted but I know I saw a picture of it on one of these local blogs. I’ll look around and see if I can find it again.

Rose: Yes if someone is on your property that isn’t a member of local police or some state or federal agency, that what am I too think? Someone is either trying to rob me, or pull off a home invasion. I will not let anyone harm my wife or family, which does happen a lot in these home invasion crimes. Shooting first and asking questions later would ensure my families safety. I’m not saying Kevin deserved to get shot for what he is trying to do, but if he got shot by a sacred home-owner he would be the one responsible for it not the home owner. He was the one trespassing on people’s properties and sending threatening letters to home owners. It may not be as big as a crime as meth production, but it is a crime nonetheless.

  39. June 25, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Remember the little yellow signs that said “This family supported by Timber Dollars?” Maybe you guys all need little green signs that say “This family supported by Pot Dollars” – see if you get any more sympathy than the logging families got. Or the fisherman for that matter. There are plenty of hard working people here who contribute to the economy, was long before growhouses came to town and will be long after they are gone. And if the growhouses really are the cause of rising home prices (I don’t think they are, but…) if they are, then you can make the argument that the pot economy hurts regular people on a daily basis.

Katie Couric just had an interesting story about how The Taliban is growing because the Afghans have been growing poppies as a major crop for centuries but the US has been destroying crops there because the market translates into money that buys weapons to fight us, and the US takes it’s war on drugs seriously. problem is by destroying the primary crop of most Afghanis these people are without the means to take care of themselves and their families. The anger is causing many relatives of their relatives to join the Taliban. One of the Ambassadors suggests that a pharmaceutical company pay these farmers to grow for them so that they can use the poppy medicinally. No answer yet from the government if such a thing is possible. Watcha think, will we legalize heroin poppies?

    Dear XXXX,

As you may know, the City of Arcata is experiencing a serious issue with suburban homes converted whole or in part to marijuana cultivation facilities. Associated problems include pungent marijuana odor, building code violations, fires, home invasion robberies, threats to neighbors and loss of neighborly community. The Planning Commission will consider new land use regulations to abate these problems at its Tuesday, May 27 meeting.

Arcata residents have been meeting informally to identify and discuss the suspected “grow houses” in their neighborhoods. These houses typically exhibit one or more of the following characteristics: “green” or “skunky” marijuana odor, house numbers removed, blacked-out windows, rapidly whirling PG&E meter wheels, no residents or noncommunicative residents, constant fan noise, “No Trespassing” signs and lots of late-night comings-and-goings, often including rental trucks.

Public records list you as the owner of the property at XXX XXX XXX in Arcata. This residence has been mentioned as exhibiting some combination of the above traits. I don’t know whether marijuana is grown there or not, and if it is, whether or not it is a legal grow under Prop 215, the Compassionate Use Act (which we support).

If you have anything you’d like to tell me about this house, or if you have any questions or other issues to discuss, please feel free to contact me.

As far as going to the police, that is what people do if they suspect a crime. If they are told it isn’t a crime, there is nothing wrong with letting the owners of the homes If not for all these houses being damaged this wouldn’t even be an issue. Then there is the matter of homes being rented by growers instead of families who need shelter and driving up the price of rent for everyone due to lower supply and more demand.

Thanks Heraldo, I was beginning to think I didn’t see that and just read about it. I swear I looked there but didn’t see it.

If I remember the story right (and please correct me if I’m wrong) was that the police came and it did have pot plants in it, don’t remember if it was a legal 215 garden or not. My point was that whoever did that could have seriously jeopardized the safety and well being of a legal 215 patient. That’s what outraged me when I heard the story. I feel what you anti-grow house people in Arcata are upset about and wish there was an easy way to make it all better for everyone, but you have to admit this tactic is just not the way to accomplish what you all are trying to do. Whoever did this did not think it all the way through. There has to be a way for patients to feel safe as well as setting neighbors minds at ease that everything is on the up and up. Unfortunately it’s going to be up to the local politicians that have failed us all thus far.

The house did turn out to be a grow house, according to the Arcata Eye. I can’t remember if the whole house was lit up or if someone was actually living there.

You’re vendetta against the culture that didn’t think you were cool is bad for this county. I blame you!

And I really think it is cool that you “snooped” my file name from a document you stole from me. Remember how that sister came out of the post office and ran you down and retrieved my property. I told her when she brought it back to me “I was willing to lose my papers to see that funny shit again.

Were you high when you did that Kevin? Did you ever buy pot? Did some one sell you it? Fucking hypocrite.

And if anyone can scan something Hoover wrote, e-mail it to Heraldo and lets have an online comparison.

If Hoover knew it was a grow house, it is likely all the neighbors did too. Him notifying rental owners and reporting on the problem does not in any way implicate him in the vandalism.

Everyone who wants medicine but can’t find it will boycott the Arcata Eye. Everyone who has a loved one who can’t get medicine will boycott the Arcata Eye. Everyone who is as mad as hell about this will boycott the Arcata Eye. That just leaves you, the busyness owners, to not boycott the Arcata Eye.

Why can’t we work to legalize pot and not to glorify and protect the illegal growers, especially those who ruin our neighborhoods and those who use weapons to protect their large grows? Anony,Miss, I don’t “hate” anybody. I don’t like the way you busyness owners force your agenda’s on the people against their will. I don’t like that you believe you should have all the freedoms, rights, and resources, yet those you spit on shouldn’t. I don’t like they way you lie, exaggerate, and stereo type shit you know nothing about. I don’t like the fact that you think you should get unlimited money produced by poorly paid workers while you sit on your asses and dictate how those poor workers must live. I don’t like how you blindly follow bad leaders and policies that destroy our community. I don’t like how you justify your fascist ideas, and oppression with the profits of your exploitations.

Anonymous, I don’t have a vendetta against baby cain Hoover. I can see his weekly lies with my own eyes. He spins everything to some giant evil that evidence never supports, but his busyness owner friends do. He gives the busyness owner’s points of view, and for everyone else he give his interpretation in his “police logs.” I don’t like the fact Hoover is a elitist bigot and he prints a tabloid that makes that clear. And, I don’t like the fact that every lie you read on this, and other, blogs about how I am supposed to be is really a big fat intentional lie started by Baby Cain.

How this is relate to me is: I live here and so do many whom I love. I was born in a free country, fought to defend a free country, and have dedicated my life to maintaining this as a free country. I want my country back! I don’t want revenge, I want JUSTICE! I don’t have to “pick on the majority of Arcatans,” because the majority of Arcatans are not fascist busyness owners.

The small mom and pops that are of question are the types that you could trust in a day care setting.
They are also the types that would take the shirt off their back for you. The discussion is not about “neighborhood reckers”. It is about people that are a valuable asset of our community.
There should be no celebration here. Amidst fires, and losses in the education system our National Priorities were way off base with this incident. The people in question were not treated in a humane way. Their animals are probably thirsty and I am sickened that family homes are being threatened with forfeiture. We should have the right in this “Free” country to choose our own types of medicine. LEGALIZE IT ON THE FEDERAL LEVEL!
