Four score and many years ago

unemployment2004 Economic Index: “Locally the unemployment rate [...] remained below the state average.”

2009 North Coast Journal“For the first time in many, many years, Humboldt County’s unemployment rate had just slipped beneath the state average. For the first time in living memory, more Humboldt County people who wanted a job had a job, compared with California at large.”

While 2004 seems like a long national nightmare ago, it is indeed in living memory.

LOL! Who would have thought. Now imagine if we had more chain stores up here, especially the ones imploding right now.

  2. Ozzy says:

    BTW, good observation.

  3. Hank Sims says:

Gah, how ghastly. Was that a blip?

  4. Heraldo says:

Maybe just a wrinkle in the time-space continuum.

Figures on employment and unemployment in Humboldt County is interesting when there are not that many jobs to begin with. The dipping below is actually a camoflauge, as the fact of the matter is unemployment has pretty much followed the lack of jobs in Humboldt’s case; therefore, it is not surprising that where jobs DO EXIST IN LARGER #’s, that the LOSS OF THOSE JOBS would statistically create the inversion with the unemployment rates cited.

Even some who don’t want a job have a job. Hey, where can I find a good manicurist? My nails need help!

The last eight years seems like a bad dream, but it was reality.

  9. Fred Mangels says:

    All Bush’s fault, huh, Carol?

    I don’t think so.

  10. McKinleyvillan says:

well, Hank, it must be gratifying to know that we are reading and really thinking about what you write!

The Bush Administration was a American national disaster. Like Katrina did to New Orleans, Bush devastated this country.

  12. All Bush’s fault? No. Bush can’t help it. Blame the people who put him there: Nader voters.

  13. Heraldo says:

Ugh. What a cop out. Blame voters who didn’t want to vote for Lieberman. Perhaps Gore should have acted more like a Dem than a Repub. Then the Supremes wouldn’t have had the opportunity to chose the president.

  14. Well, it’s worked out for us, anyway:

“For the first time in living memory, more Humboldt County people who wanted a job had a job, compared with California at large.”

    Bizarre. Who wouldda thought?

  15. “They thought they’d vote the Democratic slate,
But somehow felt they needed something more.
They finally found a candidate who was
    More sanctimonious than Albert Gore.”

  16. Indie says:

Ahem, elephant in the room: what do these figures actually mean when such a huge part of the economy is underground?

  17. Walt says:

Don’t forget, those who have quit looking are statistically counted as employed. And those who have two jobs are employed squared, and I’ll bet there are more of both in HumCo than the state as a hole (cq).

Also, I wonder if the economy tanks more, will the price of our wonderweed go down? Will “clinics” be converted to soup kitchens?

  18. Auntie Mayme says:

Good idea, Walt. Hemp soup and hemp bread lines . . .

People, it’s been eight years since Bush stole Florida, and three months since a real Democrat won. Can we give the anti-Nader campaign a rest?

As far as Real-Estate plunging and causing this economic job mess leading to the bailouts, Democrats can’t run under cover and solely blame Republicans; nor, vice a versa. President Clinton started the “Capital Gains Exemptions” for homeowners to live in their house 2 out of 5 years and be able to take a “Capital Gains Tax Exemption” on either $250,000 or $500,000 (depending on IF MARRIED) against their primary residence only. This caused a lot of tax dollars to not be collected from the uber wealthy folks; and, it also caused the un-realistic valuation prop-ups that YOUR CURRENT ELECTED OFFICIALS WILL NOT DISCUSS; AND, WILL DENY ‘TILL DEATH. Both houses in Federal and State Congresses, as well as your local jurisdictional elected officials, KNEW THIS AND SAID NOTHING – all in the name of raising societal Real-Estate values which created higher tax bases on EVERYONE, regardless of whether or not you benefitted from being uber wealthy and selling every 2+ years TAX FREE! Worse yet, the fraud of frauds further seperated “class economics” into a “Greater Divide”, thus limiting who could own their first home which leads to a political issue of “affordable housing” or, “low income housing” to follow state suitorship for the General Plan Update which is a “20 year outreach program” which has been a Supervisorial and sub-ordinate fraud since Day 1!

Lower Property Values means that homeowners would not have paid super-inflated Transaction Prices, Property Taxes, Homeowners Insurance, Mortgages, seperate Earthquake Insurance, Fire Insurance, Course of Construction Insurance, Life Insurance based on Net Worths, Business Taxes on higher values due to Unemployment, etc… So much to talk about and discuss; however, people will have to wait for “fresh blood” as their representatives at ALL levels of government. Obama is missing the boat thus far on his economic policies. There exists many Ponsai Schemes that enough people are unaware of. At least Obama is shamed by the unfounded and unethical bonuses; however, how can he not when sooooo many Americans have already openly complained with media follow-ups. For Obama to stay mum would have further eroded is competency.

Question: Why do you think there seems to be a perpetual opening on the Humboldt County Property Tax Assessment Appeals Board?

Answer: In order to give Real-Estate Owners their money back would mean “realistically” that local jurisadictions would have less General Fund monies due to legally having to lower values on the Humboldt County Property Tax Roll. The strategy that Supervisors and subordinating staff enact for practicing is to DENY regardless of truths and legality to FORCE Property Owners to go to Judge Brown (oops, he got out when gettin’ out was good) or any other “under the carpet” sweeper court system magistrate protecting the government jurisdiction’s Money Laundering FRAUD. The process is a “SPOILS SYSTEM” which is not functioning legally. The decision making by the Board of Supervisors is procedural and they intentionally violate “State Constitutional Law” knowing that State Legislators under Proposition 13 will not enforce the laws due to Supervisorial inaction (unless it is a “State Public Project” only). The State Knowingly participates in the Fraud since they get a majority of the “Local Property Tax Funding”.

Therefore, “On and On we go, where it stops, only the knowing know.”

Note: If the 2 out of 5 years was limited to once (like it used to be at retirement); or, limited to selling only once every 10 years; or 15 years; or 20 years, then, the multiple sales would not have occured at a minimum of every two years. Just think how much “marked up profiteering” was stolen by uber fat cats from the working class while also decreasing the overall generation and collection of capital gains taxes on those wealthier fat cats. This “spoils system” created a top heavy construction industry which now has a very high, unsold number of inventorized homes. It also caused the lower income and working classes to pay more than their fair share in taxes, while also lsong their jobs since the uncollected tax dollars did not get pumped back into the economy to pay down State and Federal Debt – Hence, Deficit Spending.

In addition, how many people ralistically live in MANSIONS? Again, when 1% of the nation’s citizenry owns 90% of the nation’s assets and wealth; and, while 99% of the nation’s citizenry fights for the remaining 10% of assets and wealth, a person MAY realize the “True Problem”. Simply put, “Class Economic Seperation” to cause chaos which generates a multiplicity of political issues for the political insiders to masquerade around the minds of so many voters and taxpayers who just plain don’t know what is going on.

Bonnie Neely got so upset at the last Board Meeting over this Assessment Appeals discussion that she mentally fell worried during a vote and forgot a vote had occured on the “related” State Budget Update which occured immediately after the Property Tax discussion and Request to ABOLISH the Assessment Appeals Board due to inaction and lack of legal, constitutional function. Earlier in the day, The County Tax Collector – Stephen A. Strawn – sidestepped and used figures that did not justify reality. He knows too; and, he helps to cover it up, even though he dictates that he only collects, not valuates. Yet, he coordinates with the Assessors Department and it’s appraisers often enough. When the County Property Tax Roll decreases, Strawn looks bad too, it is solely not just the appraisers or Assessor.

    Last, but not least,

the working class spends their profits more efficiently than the uber greedy wealthy who just miser it through bonuses and high salaries, as well as, sales with fat cat businesses; not small businesses or local businesses per se.

  26. “Henchman” seems so violent somehow. May I suggest “servant” or even “hand-maiden”?

  27. "HENCHMAN OF JUSTICE" says:

Hand-maiden seems a sexist “cut-down” if it applies to females. Servant seems to be one getting paid. Nope, they do not apply.

Vindication, Vengeance and Vendetta would seem too over-emotional.

    Henchman is accurately assessed.
