Oh, Los Bagels, your salty slugs are the best and your community support warms a lefty heart.
Instead of celebrating itself at its upcoming 25th birthday bash, Los Bagels is throwing a party to support Planned Parenthood, Green Wheels and Humboldt Baykeeper.
Serious lefty cred at this event.
Show your face here and you’ll probably get added to some sort of list at Security National.

Make mine a veggie delight on a slug, with larrup’n sauce. Mmm.
Please people, don’t just go to eat, drink, dance, and have a good time. Shame on Los Bagels for calling it a bash, they should have said SERIOUS DISCUSSION.
Shame on Los Bagels for making their customers support their left wing political views.
You won’t find me eating there anymore. There are other places to get my bagels from businesses that don’t push politics.
John, you can’t find something good about any of those, not even Green Wheels?
Los Bagels best kept secret was their sandwich loaves. I haven’t picked one up in a while because I’m in Arcata less than I used to be, but they were always a treat (and a lot less expensive than their addictive slugs).
You know what, Johneureka? I’ll bet you won’t be missed. I hereby condemn you to Sara Lee bagels from Safeway.
The conservative restaurant scene hasn’t been the same since OH’s closed last year
And now it’s a hip hop nightclub. What does that say about the changing tide in Eureka?
What next? The Ingomar club becomes an abortion clinic?
If you all want to go eat somewhere that is anti-Planned Parenthood, may I suggest Carl’s Jr.
Ed, Ed, Ed,
No need for a “serious discussion” because the Federal Government is not challenging a political vote which a local defense fund is needed to defend the decision. I actually chuckled knowing exactly who you were poking good fun at – I am not upset as it seems you are a good guy. Again, here is that thread Title to delineate the difference,
BTW, Dennis (the owner) is a great guy and has been comunity oriented for decades. The slugs with pesto is my favorite along with an onion bagle with cream cheese, a tomato and lightly salted. Very good.
Now, time to finish my morning break – too bad I did not have that slug right about now.

johneureka: don’t let the door hit you on the way out!
A well meaning old acquaintance wrote emails to me this weekend telling me that I need to be SAVED and REPENT, because I told her that I support Planned Parenthood. She wanted me to send an empty red envelope to President Obama; the red envelope symbolic of an aborted fetus. I politely wrote back, saying that Education is the key to preventing unwanted pregnancy and I that I support PP and will not be sending an empty red envelope to President Obama.
Congratulations to Los Bagels for supporting such worthy causes!
I will be out of town on Sunday but know I will be frequenting Los Bagels more often to thank them for supporting such worthy organizations.
I’m going to try to make it.
Planned Parenthood provides more than advice on using condoms and birth control. They provide gynecological health services of all sorts.
PP also give out dental dams and instructions on the use of dental dams. If someone is mad about this, they can send Obama a letter with a wet spot in the middle to signify the evils of PP.
What in the name of Gandhi’s ass does their politics have to do with their food? LB has great bagels, insanely delicious knishes and delightful empanadas.
True foodies think of good food first and politics later.
So we’ll see you at the celebration Chris?
Nope … I’ll be on my way outta town to another business project on Sunday. I wonder if I can slip a slug through TSA security?
planned parenthood is a eugenics organization google: social darwinism, planned parent hood can be thanked for its help in killing millions of unborn babys a year! Thats worth raising money for!
Have fun with your “lefty” buddies heraldo, maybe you can meet a nice guy!
You mean like a nice guy who wants to force women to give birth against their will?
we can thank planned parenthood and abortion for our low crime rates too
Maybe Dennis will sell them in McKinleyville and Rio Dell as “Holy Roll(ers)”.
No such thing as a bread roll that’s political, or religious.
What? Have you never attended a Passover dinner?
421, I thought Baykeeper was responsible for the low crime rates? Good to know that Planned Parenthood is more controversial than Humboldt Baykeeper or GreenWheels!
Not to forget the radical Audubon Society.
ROLLS aren’t eaten at a passover seder, or in the dinner after a seder, unless its a very reform ritual. And matzah isn’t blessed or consecrated at all. If it goes stale, it gets tossed to the chickens with the table scraps. Matzah is on store shelves year round for all to buy and enjoy, regardless of religious belief. Comes in a variety of flavors just like some other crackers.
Maybe a communion wafer, after its been consecrated, is a religious bread. But before that, its also just another cracker. Strictly speaking though, after being consecrated, its no longer bread at all.
Good on Los Bagel’s, a local business getting involved it the community to help people.
I’ll buy more bagels. I like the poppyseedd ones sliced in half and toasted with cream cheese or avocado.
we can thank planned parenthood and abortion for our low crime rates too
On the downside, there was a study indicating that had abortion remained illegal Bush could not have won in 2000 or 2004.
As for Los Bagels I recently tried their sushi bagel for the first time. The wasabi schmeer has a nice kick. The curry schmeer is also very nice. I was in the Eureka branch this morning and spent more than ten dollars so I got to spin the wheel. Earned me a free cookie.

No, it’s flesh.
communion wafer = it is a symbol of the body of christ.

communication wafer = a promising approach for optical interconnects in stacked wafer architectures.

Not merely a symbol to Catholics. Google “transubstantiation.”
If it weren’t for planned parenthood I might still have lefty cred. Thankfully they cleared it up.
Vasectomy?
Why would you support a predatory litigious org like Baykeeper – they don’t NEED your money – they make their money filing lawsuits. They look for the deepest pockets around, like Rob Arkley and Red Emmerson, send the kayakers out to collect samples, put up sign urging you to call in violations only in creeks near those big pocket’s properties, and then they sue, and they get piles and piles of go-away extortion money.
At least they did. Now, the prey is fighting back, I hear. Maybe they do need your coupla bucks to pay their staff lawyers.
Think about it. If you have a restaurant you serve food and you hire cooks and waitresses – a predatory org hires attorneys – why would that be? Why to file suits of course.
Baykeeper was started with go-away money from an ERF suit, don’t believe me? They brag about it in a North Coast Journal article. That’s why they can afford the nice Old Town location, the Boston Whaler, and all the fancy collateral – T-shirts, business cards, signs, letterhead, they are better outfitted than most Old Town businesses. What was it guys? $800.000? More? Less?
Support Los Bagels, they are great and they do good work. Support Old Town Businesses, But save your money when it comes to “Moneykeeper.”
What’s the link?
I am not fully supportive of these groups. I do support PP, and Green Wheels seems like a good one. I am not sold on Baykeeper either, but could be- I need to learn more. In the business I am involved with, we try to be neutral, so as not to offend the people (who comes from all parts of the political spectrum) who bring in our bread and butter. We don’t take a stand like Los Bagels does, we don’t have posters up or get our names on controversial group lists. We have a staff that is politically diverse, and we respect that as well. I give Los Bagels credit for doing this though. They will probably give up some business over it but it doesn’t matter to them- the philosophy is more important than the income. Not every business can afford to take a stand.
Whenever I’m there it’s packed. Everybody knows it’s a hippie operation. I don’t think they’ll lose any business over this.
Anony.Miss,
Is this the same or different philosophy over income that yourself and other bloggers seemed to not want to discuss regarding the beer and bread fundraiser for the issue of military recruitment and children? Err, the money needed for a legal defense fund as opposed to the discussion of children being used as tools (both sides) for an issue. If you are part of a politically diverse staff, then why not present a meaningful discussion about what people spoke about with regard to the pros and cons for that particular political theme, event, gathering, etc… which was implied through forms of advertising as being for the benefit of the children? Just saying……

Well, just sayin’ business is business and I like to stay afloat. In my business we talk business and not politics. When I help with a fundraiser, I hope people know why they are helping out but it is not a requirement to talk about it the entire time. Try having a fund raiser and having the program be only about your cause. Good luck with that!
I’m wondering what the “Untrue Left” is…
“True foodies think of good food first and politics later.”
Good! That means that I can try out Mike’s Garlic Fries.
Anony.Miss,
the only point you have proven through your lecturing, motherly rhetoric is that money comes before Philosophical Ideology and/or Ideological Philosophy – however you want to flip-flop it. Now, I understand why you are ashamed to use your true, legal name – people that know you would frown upon the flip-flopping comments. Oh, nice attempt to use psychological pathology as a reason not to give your true name on the below thread
.
In fact, when reading your comments on this other thread, one will realize the flip-flopping. Too bad money curtails your judgement.

Gee, I guess Anon.Miss has missed those Jerry Lewis telethons where all they do is talk about the “cause” of MS. As well as the organizations raising money for starving children. They seem to mostly do all right, even though speaking only about their cause.
How about the “business” concept of doing well by doing good? Maybe that just doesn’t work when one group of your customers hates the others and wants only to destroy them. But sometimes, you got to give something up in order to be able to get to something better.
Like the Halloween treat of a jar of coins with narrow mouth. A child who grabs a handful can’t get her hand out of the jar. But by taking fewer coins, she can remove her hand with coins. I guess the good ole’ Humboldt solution would be for her to keep the big handful and run away with her hand still in the jar, getting it all. Like taking every speck of gold, tree, and fish you can find.
Mike’s Garlic Fries kicks ass.
Chili cheese dogs + tomato = cure for cancer!
Muscular Dystrophy, not Multiple Sclerosis. Jerry Lewis isn’t just an average citizen. He is a celebrity and as such, provided entertainment. His fame and relatively unique telethon helped MD greatly, and the topic was reiterated frequently. This was a variety show with many stars, and entertainment and educational program that has gone for many years.
So, in other words, Jerry Lewis did not just get up there and talk about MD- he entertained.
And NAN, running a successful business or a successful fund raiser involves being realistic about what people want to pay for. I don’t compromise my ethics and I also don’t let money curtail my judgment, though I know you want to believe that.
You can tell a lot about a person by looking at who their enemies are.
And if they wear suspenders.
Hey anony.miss,
You wrote “I give Los Bagels credit …” and “…(Los Bagels) philosophy is more important than the income”.
and “Just sayin’ business is business ..”
So on the one hand you say you approve of what Los Bagels do, standing up for their principles publically accepting that might reduce their income. But you excuse yourself from that becuse it could cost YOU some inome.
If that isn’t compromising your stated “ethics” I don’t know what is. Elsewhere you’ve commented you income in into six figures so I don’t hink you can cry “poor” and claim survival is at stake here. Really, I think you do live up to your actual ethics. Those are, “make as much income as possible” because “business is business”.
Now open Tuesdays!
