The question was raised here on the Humboldt Herald, and it’s reportedly causing a headache for Eureka Mayor Virginia Bass.
Rumor has it Bass is preparing to run against Humboldt County Supervisor Bonnie Neely in 2010 — but there’s just one problem: The Bass HQ is smack on the dividing line of the 1st and 4th supervisorial Districts.
Apparently, Bass has been casting ballots — without complaint — in the 1st District, which is currently represented by Jimmy Smith. Neely represents the 4th.
As the story goes, Bass never bothered to complain about the issue — until Neely’s eighty-some thousand dollar annual salary started looking like a better gig than the mayor’s current job pushing drugs for Eli Lilly.
Bass recently visited the elections office to work out the issue, according to sources.

Oh my, why the angst, could it be that “Herolda” wants to run also?
That’s good news. She’ll be a good County Supervisor.
Cat fight! Cat fight!
She may just have trusted the elections office and it is good to know that Bonnie’s sister who works in the election office is able to feed this oh so important info to Heraldo on a timely basis. Virginia like her father is committed to the well being of the community and seeks a middle ground with solutions if available that can benefit everyone involved a novel and noble approach but one that scares and confuses the likes of heraldo and the minions who know they can not threaten Virginia like thet have Bonnie in the last election how else does Richard Salzman become her ally during those times. As they say Ray Charles could see this one coming.
Maybe Bonnie could pull an Arlen Specter.
One cannot be “smack on the dividing line”. The “dividing line is exactly that, a line. You are on one side or the other. The elections office cannot move the line either except every ten years after a census. If Bass was on the 1st District side before then she still is. You cannot change your district except by moving, the line doesn’t move.
Time for Bonnie to go!
The more likely to change parties is Virginia. She has expressed an interest in changing many times ofer the years due to her lack of comfortable with the Repubs. I believe she also supported Obama in the last election. It might be a great time for people who know Virginia to give her a call to encourage her to switch. She is really a better fit with the Dems anyway.
If Bonnie switched she would run the risk of losing her Governator appointed cush Costal Commission job.
Not if a democrat becomes governor.
Sounds no different than Glass decided whether he lived in Eureka or not.
Ah, yes. Abandoning her council seat to tip the tie-breaking mayoral spot to the Ingomar/business interests and prolonging business as usual in Eureka. How noble.
Virginia is not about to switch. That is a wet dream of the Democrats. Bonnie switched way back in the 90′s when the local Republicans supported Margie Handley for Assembly over her.
Bonnie’s heart (like Specter’s) only belongs to Bonnie. She plays with the Dems because her feelings were hurt.
I have spoken with Virginia before. In addition to being generally well intentioned she really cares about people. In any district she would be a great addition to the party. How about a letter/email campaign to encourage her to switch?
I suspect that Virginia had moved to that home during her term serving Eureka’s 2nd ward, and may have been why she opted to run against Peter Lavallee. She eked out a victory there and if she opts to rent a place in the 4th ward in order to run,she may fall short along the same lines as Nancy Flemming did. Also,I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bonnie hang it up,and opt to not run again.
why doesn’t Virginia run against Jimmy Smith?
Because she would lose.
Jimmy is not up for another three years. I doubt very much that he will run again.
I’m unsure of when Census changes take affect but is it possible that the lines would have already moved in 2010.
Just remember That the Mayor and Rob Arckley are good friends and think alike on many issues. If she does run against Bonnie, it will be a vote for Rob’s agenda too.
Why is it that anyone in office or wanting to run for office is a turd to a lot of you? What, if anything, do you do to improve the community you live in?
Ya, no matter whats good for the community, remember, Rob is the big evil. You on the other hand have done quite a bit for the community, like ???????????. Just like so many on this blog, lots of lip.
Oh, and has Chris K changed his address to Trinidad yet.
Jimmy and Virginia are friends, too.
Crap…..I lost the bet. I bet a friend that Arkley’s name would come up in 15 or less posts but didn’t make it until #20…..sigh……
Hope Virginia runs. She is a great gal and an honest one to boot. Bonnie ought to give it up. She has been there too long and we deserve a change.
How can someone run for supervisor who has so few discernible positions? What does Virginia Bass believe in? She has no voting record as mayor, so I guess you have to look at her campaign platform: affordable housing, living wage jobs, yadayada. Where’s the walk to go with that talk?
HumRed, the constant hate-spewing is most unbecoming of an elected official. We get it, your angry, but you aren’t contributing anything to the discussion beyond that.
The prognosticator’s political scheming and Machiavellian plot twists are entertaining to say the least. Auntie get’s my vote for best humor, but shouldn’t we all be taking this so much more seriously. I’m ready to man the trenches! We’ll fight to the end!
Hate-spewing, what are you talking about. What elected who. I am merely pointing out some obvious situations. because I happen to disagree with your views, that makes me a hater. As far as being angry, not hardly. I believe in rational discourse, with both sides represented. this is something that does not take place here often. So every once in a while, I like to point out some left (no pun intended) out parts of the puzzle. I understand this does not fit the agenda. Sorry, reality is objective, not subjective. Just cause its what you believe, does not make it real.
HumRed, your parts of the puzzle won’t fit in mine, no matter how much I try. Maybe we’re solving different puzzles.
Thank you, RedHummer, I am having a good humor day.
Virginian is real sweet. Unfortunately, there’s not much there, there. You can pretty much count on here to fall down on the side of the good ‘ol boys, every time. In that regard she’s been disappointing.
I’m still waiting for her to show some signs of intellectual curiosity, of showing that she’s able to think for herself. I think it’s going to be a long wait. She’s just too tied to the folks who want to keep things the way they’ve always been.
I look forward to her debates with Bonnie. As for her being a closet Democrat, I think the Compassionate Conservative trick worked once, but ya can’t fool all of the people all of the time…
You need look no further than the man she lives with. Scary!
All this talk about Virginia and her being in alliance with the good old boys, how do you think Eureka got where it is except for old money perseverance and hard work and now where we have Eureka and Humboldt in a position that all the newbies (sorry its true) screaming there heads off we are supposed to cave. As for waffling Bonnie needed Timber the Barnums, Sierra Pacific, Palco Eel River sawmills, and now she is gone to where the votes are she even left her husband after he lost the DA race as he was not an asset anymore, time to rethink public trough jobs.
So exactly where is Virginia moving to so she can run. I believe she only recently moved into the home she is in. Maybe she can get an apartment next to Larry Glass’s, better yet they could share, Larry doesn’t really live there anyway.
I don’t think Eureka will tolerate another psuedo-resident. More likely Nancy Flemming will take another stab at Bonnie. Whoever runs will have huge support against Bonnie and her self-given raise to $87,000 in a county that can’t afford it’s cops, schools, or roads.
Nancy has no intention on running. Bonnie is the highest paid County Supervisor in the state per capita by over $30,000.
I handicapped the 2010 4th District Supervisor race at http://samoasoftball.blogspot.com/
she does not have to move to be in bonnies she already is
Living in Bonnie’s, voting in Jimmy’s.
I am just going by the map unless it is wrong
Has anyone solved the unclear map problem yet?
we waiting for you to do it
I hoped someone who worked in the unclear map office would post an explanation.
It seems to be true that Virgina moved her registration to her back fence. Her house and driveway are in the 1st district. She sleeps, talks on the phone, eats dinner, parks and conducts all of her home life in the 1st district. Common sense would say that she lives in the 1st District. Bending the rule and looking for loopholes for one’s self are just an indicator of a person’s character.
She voted in the 1st District without complaint until she decided to run for Supervisor in the 4th District.
If I was a 4th district resident I would question the legality of this. I would not take the word of the elections office. They have been wrong before.
Is the there any kind of appeal process? This is complete BS, she lives in the first district along with her immediate neighbors Rex Bohn and Police Chief Garr Nielsen.
Someone has to follow through on this a push the elections office to verify whether any part of her property is in the district she wants to be elected from. She voted for Jimmy Smith when he was last running. So somehow she has convinced the elections office her property has moved. It must have been that last big earthquake we had. This is all a ploy to get Bonnie off the board of sups, thinking that the county can more strongly influence the CCC on the balloon tract project of Arkley’s. You remember when she and Jeff went to San Francisco to do that very thing. That is why Arkley paid for Nancy Flemming’s failed run against Bonnie and it is the same play again. Twist the rules any way they can to get Bonnie out of there. No wonder there is so much polarization in this community. If we don’t strongly protest this publicly, he could get his way this time, and the community will be the lessor for it.
Just one more backroom deal from the good ole boys and girls of Humboldt County. What a bunch of crooks.
