More excitement than you can shake a cell tower at

Leonard-announcement-REDACTED

An exciting announcement by soon-to-be-termed-out-of-office Eureka City Councilman Jeff Leonard?  What could it possibly be?

Ah-ha. I was wondering why Jeff was being nice to me. Now I know!! And here I just thought it was my sparkling personality. LOL

  2. High Finance says:

Anybody that can end the reign of Bonnie Neeley has my vote !

  3. Heraldo says:

I guarantee that Jeff is not that person.

  4. Bob says:

Maybe he’s announcing the completion of the Eureka Skatepark.

  5. HumRed says:

Ah! Election time is here, hit the spin.

  6. Barb says:

    Heraldo,

Would you mind removing the rsvp number? It’s a private phone number and it would be appreciated if you could remove it.

As for the invitation, consider it open so Y’all come now, ya hear????

    Thanks,
    Barb Leonard
    Mother-in-chief of details

  7. Heraldo says:

    Taken care of.

  8. Barb says:

Thanks so much. We appreciate it.

  9. Anony.Miss says:

I don’t know Jeff but I really like Barbara.

  10. McKinleyvillan says:

that’s nice. Really really nice. I’m so glad to know that a random anonymous blogger like’s Jeff Leonard’s mom!

  11. Anonymous says:

Jeff has a long record of disingenuous self-representation, bad judgment calls at crucial moments, and is generally not to be trusted. Even some of his closest friends say so.

I wouldn’t vote for him if he was the last guy on earth.

  12. anonymous says:

Mr.Anony.Miss might not be so anonymous.

  13. Anony.Miss says:

Barb and her husband took sports team photos for years and everyone loved them. Good photos too! Nice people.

  14. Annonymous says:

    Silly people.

Everyone knows Virginia Jackson is running, setting up Mike Jones to fulfill her notable talent of turning her head left-to-right more times per minute than a Felix-the-Cat kitchen clock.

    Yet, she towers above Leonard.

Someone tell Linda Atkins, Larry Glass and others to be weary of cameras at any such event… Jeff and Virginia will need all the illusions of support they can paste together on a flier, just as Polly Endert did during her campaign.

  15. Tapperass says:

Might he announce that he is the brains behind the Humboldt Herald?

  16. Anonymous says:

Beware the claws of the Tigress.

  17. Samoasoftball says:

I posted Jeff’s announcement in April. So let me update, Bonnie is in, Jeff is in, Richard Marks is in and Virginia is on holding pattern. Neal Latt still might be in. Lot’s of room in the pool. Jump on in!

  18. Anonymous says:

Sounds like a run off between Bonnie and Virginia. Too bad, we all (both sides) could have saved a bundle by resolving the race in the primary.

  19. High Finance says:

We still have that little problem of her living on the wrong side of the street & not in Bonnie’s district.

  20. Heraldo says:

    Do not insult me thusly.

  21. Heraldo says:

You might be wrong on that. She’s been voting in Jimmy’s district but may actually live in Bonnie’s.

  22. There will be at least $300,000 spent on this Supervisor race. Here is something many people in the county do not know: The Humboldt County Supervisor annual pay is more than any STATE LEGISLATOR seat in 49 states, not including California. ($80,000)

Per Capita, the Humboldt County Supervisors make $30,000 per year average more than other California Counties.

We must be a rich California County then, right? The average median household income in Humboldt is around $37,000 a year as compared to the state average of $60,000.

That must mean Humboldt County is cheap place to live in then, right? Nope, the Cost of Living Index is 3% higher than the national average.

This is the reality of the picture. And it is not all good.

  23. capdiamont says:

Speaking of cell tower, looks like the tower itself is about to be erected.

  24. Neal Latt says:

    Ha ha, Richard.

Please, no more apostrophes in lots, unless you’re making a biblical reference.

  25. Anonymous says:

I hear you rented out your lawn in back to put in another one, as a backup.

  26. Sorry Neal. EHS and CR edumacated here. I am a mill worker……..oh yeah..was. Thanks for helping the Henderson Center neighborhood. You were standing for what was right. The process was flawed. Linda and Larry were right. The rest caved in to Corporate threats.

  27. capdiamont says:

Actually I don’t have a lawn in back. They are a mono culture, needing extensive care, mowing, etc. That’s what the goat is for. Though just having one doesn’t seem to be quite keeping up. Still not a lawn.

  28. Anonymous says:

Richard, you are all too right. The salary paid to our supervisors is obscene. Mark and Clif spoke against the huge raise, Jimmy voted against it. Now that they have the votes what have they done about it. Exactly nothing, nothing at all. So much for working for the people. How many cops, firemen, or potholes could that money pay for? Maybe they are just afraid of Bonnies evil glare. Maybe they just want the dough. Either way, none of them are out for us.

  29. The Monitor says:

An $80,000 job is a lot of motivation to get that old hat in the ring. There had better be some damn good ideas from those who choose to run. I am not sure if a skate park on the resume works.

  30. Neal Latt says:

Thanks for standing with us, Richard. That was a noble battle. I still think we could have beat them on the issue of bad faith – all the evidence points in that direction, even without the discovery process we might have used.

  31. Anonymous says:

Word is that Virginia’s people talked to Jeff about not running and he flat-out refused.

Guess he needs the money bad. Can’t Rob just give him some?

  32. Tapperass says:

Come to think of it, declaring a candidacy for a Supervisor Seat, or any news about the skate park really are not all that exciting.

  33. Anonymous says:

What county do you live in?

Can’t be all Federal pot raids and assault weapon shootouts on Hwy 299 now, can it?

  34. Anonymous says:

    Idiotic waste of time. Noble??

  35. Carol says:

I am glad to be OFF the HCDCC right now. Local politics: Bah Humbug! Time to plant veggies and flowers – you all have fun!

  36. Matthew Bass says:

Jeff, wake up we have have God, errrrr Rob on our side. We have and great ground game we rolled out during Franks campaign, You should just give up now and form a united front. Mom and Dad can’t buy this for you.

  37. Barb Leonard says:

    You must have older kids.

Jeff has been the photographer for several years now. People love him too. He and his wife are partners in the business and we are still in it.

Just finished baseball and are looking forward to football.

  38. HumRed says:

Its not bad enough you want to bad mouth the guy, but to do it in a name not your own shows real class.

  39. Anonymous says:

Does that count when you take all the pot money into perspective.

  40. Anonymous says:

Barb honey, only in your mind do people love your kid.

Just about everyone I know think he’s a Napoleon-complexed asshole.

  41. Anonymous says:

HumRed talking about class is like Rob Arkley talking about manners. There’s no there there.

  42. Da Man says:

Yes- we should take an example on good manners from many of the posts here, like the previous two.

  43. Barb Leonard says:

Yeah, the nerve of that guy!! Doesn’t he know
only the chosen few get to run for elected office
    in Humboldt county?

Guess not, he has won twice even with all the naysayers and he did it on a very lean budget.

    Here’s the deal:

  44. Barb Leonard says:

Thanks for sharing. Feel better now that you have that off your “anonymous” chest?
    LOL

Surely, all the high minded who come here will be happy to identify themselves and get the straight scoop from the candidate himself, right

  45. Anonymous says:

Wait a sec. Who’s running here – Barb or Jeff?

  46. High Finance says:

Sure, the pay is too high. But so are the expectations. Why on earth is it a full-time job ?

We have department heads (also highly paid) that run the real show. We have a highly paid CAO who coordinates everything. The supervisors do no more work than Eureka City Council people do. The city council is recognized as part-time with a $500 per month salary.

The supervisors only job is PR to get re-elected.

Make the job part-time, cut the pay to $15,000 a year & we could attract far superior candidates who don’t have to give up their own careers for a temporary job.

  47. What in the name of hell does Verizon have to do with this post? Jeff has every right to run, and all of us should encourage responsible candidates to run for ALL of our local public offices.

I may or may not vote for Jeff until I know who else is in the field, but I applaud his right to run. And his public record is a helluva lot more impressive especially compared to the hide-in-the-bushes cowards who post under pseudonyms and anonymous masks, including the host of this site.

  48. capdiamont says:

    Umm, check out the title.

  49. eco-doomist says:

Well, yeah, on the one hand we have Jeff’s public record and on the other hand we have an anonymous record and Jeff’s record looks more impressive, but, I may or may not vote for him?

I just love manly man chest thumping. Are you Thor, Crith?

  50. “Its not bad enough you want to bad mouth the guy…”

Thanks, Humred. I’ll second that. The gutless loser who posts as “Matthew Bass” has nothing constructive to offer.

I’m thankful that Jeff leonard is willing to run. This should be a lively campaign.

  51. Lodgepole says:

Beer, wine, appetizers and something exciting…Maybe politics aren’t so bad after all.

  52. TreeHugger says:

I agree with Chris Parker and the Carson Park Ranger. Whether you agree with Jeff’s politics or not, the guy has worked hard on the council and his entrance in the race only makes our local democratic process stronger. And if he wins, we’d get Barb as a special advisor!

  53. D street says:

Worked hard on the city council! OMG! worked hard promoting himself!
He so afraid to stand up to the corporate bad guys. But he will use his bully pulpit to call out the taxpayer league.
I can’t wait for Jeff to be elected and hear the amazing debates that will proceed between Jeff and Jill. The supervisors will have to add extra sessions just to accommodate all to meaningless gab, and wow! we get his mom and dad in the bargain? Like the title of this post more “fun” than we can stand.
Chris this has everything to do with Verizon, becuase Jeff showed what a worm he was during that whole process.

  54. Big Al says:

Jeff should get a real job, He’s biggest lamebrain on the council. God help us if he is elected to the Supes…
BTW, Jill has been a big disappointment as well.

  55. average Eurekan says:

Jeff is the master of using twenty words to say what should have required two.

Instead of waterboarding, the CIA should have used endless-loop tapes of Jeff speaking at council meetings. I understand that under the Geneva Convention, this falls into internationally-recognized standards for “torture.”

  56. Mr. Nice says:

That’s it, screw the RTC. Like anybody really wants to show up to hear some dinosaurs stand up and lie about how great their North Coast tech endeavors are. Go back to 1999 where y’all belong.

See, with a pseudonym you too could say anything you want without puckering up to kiss some washed-up white boys’ wrinkly asses. You don’t even have to mean it. This is why Heraldo doesn’t sign his name Rob Arkley or whoever he is.

  57. Deja Vu says:

    Times Standard, 5-20-2009:

“There was no public comment at Tuesday night’s meeting, which Leonard said surprised him, especially since the true ward system was on the agenda”.

    Regular Council/Agency Meeting
    Tuesday, May 19, 2009

    14. Charter Amendments

Recommendation: 1. Consider Charter amendments for inclusion onto the November 2009 General Election ballot. 2. Give direction to staff concerning bringing back to Council for adoption of a resolution approving Charter Amendments and ballot measures for November 2009 General Election.
    (City Manager)

THE PUBLIC’S VERSION OF THE PUBLISHED AGENDA FOR MAY 19, 2009, NEVER MENTIONED “THE TRUE WARD SYSTEM”!

Here Leonard goes again, manipulating facts to downplay public input. Thus, WE ALREADY KNOW HIS VOTE.

IT’S FOR THE DEVELOPERS THAT FUND HIM, AND THE VOTING SYSTEM THEY’VE DOMINATED FOR DECADES.

  58. Snickerdoodles says:

    Twenty? More like 20,000.

That guy is a gasbag … who’s got a pointy needle?

Plus — if he was really on the side of skateboarders he would have made it legal to skate in Oldtown …

  59. Anonymous says:

Leonard gets a full agenda which the poor public does not. But he is too far out of touch to realize this.

  60. Da Man says:

Don’t hestitate to throw your hats in the ring rather than just heckle anonymously. There’s a lot of satisfaction in public service, I guarantee.

  61. Deja Vu says:

If not for thy hecklers, who shall spreadith the word?
    Corinthians 12:17:125

“Put up or shut up” is very poor reasoning indeed. Another good point sullied by assumptions.

  62. Da Man says:

    Sigh.

  63. D street says:

Two quotes from Jeff in today’s Times-Standard

“Leonard said he actually heard more members of the community say that they didn’t want the permit revoked.” He must of had his fingers in hears at the numerous public hearings and only listen to the hand full of people who wanted it. Is this you you want a a supervisor?

”I think everyone tried to find a way to help that neighborhood, but in the end the greater community interest sometimes needs to win out,” he said.
When and how, did Jeff ever try to help our neighborhood? This is just a lie. He never tried to help us. All he did was defend city staff and industry. Help us clobber this weasel at the polls. Lets make a example of him so other elected officials remember what their real job is.

  65. Casual Observer says:

If he were the last guy on earth, obviously you wouldn’t (or couldn’t) vote for him. DUH!

  66. Humboldt Politico says:

I see over on Samoa Softball that Bonnie has switched to the Democrats. Anyway word on whether this is true or not?

  67. Heraldo says:

    What’s the link?

  68. If and when Bonnie changes party affiliations, Jeff’s campaign is in deep hot water.

  69. Maude In The Middle says:

Bonnie is a Democrat today, Republican yesterday, sellout every day

  70. HumRed says:

An let me guess d dumb, vote for Neal Latts. What a surprise.

  71. "HENCHMAN OF JUSTICE" says:

Bonnie will be a Supervisor until she decides to retire or her age catches up with her – standard protocol for a career politician.

    Jeffrey Lytle
    McKinleyville – 5th District

  72. Casual Observer says:

Any update on the reason/purpose for the Leonard party scheduled for Friday?
