Human chess at Mad River Brewery

MDchessblue lake2The Humboldt Herald received notice of a “big live human chess game” taking place tonight at the Mad River Brewery in Blue Lake.  Festivities start at six.

What is it, you ask?  We haven’t the slightest, but guess that it’s something like that scene in the first Harry Potter movie — back when they reasonably resembled the books — where players take the part of the rook or knight or pawn.  Presumably, you won’t have to beat the dark lord.

Since when has strategy, logic and long periods of standing still been the goal of beer drinkers?  Perhaps the board will come equipped with something to lean on.

Why not take the chess game outdoors in the hills, and give each chess piece a 50 foot square for their domain which they then have to defend somehow, regardless of the terrain—trees, slopes, etc; the players would overlook the board and send instructions to the chess pieces for their moves. Oh, and take beer, and maybe sandwiches. Maybe camp out for the whole weekend.

Yeah, yeah, why not give each chess piece a Taser and do the game right?

Why does the chess scene in Mel Brooks’ History of the World Part 1 keep replaying over and over in my head. “It’s good to be the king.”

  4. I hear that there’s live music there every Tuesday night. They’ve got a really nice Wallace and Hinz bar, and often you can chat with the folks who brew the beer as they unwind after a long day of contributing something useful to humanity.

I thought there was gonna be a political rally or something at the brewery. Real chess, didn’t know anyone in that part of the county played antiquated games based on war strategy anymore.

“…….strategy, logic and long periods of standing still been the goal of beer drinkers?” actually we those things every time we consider a rest room stop.

It’s actually reminiscent of a practice of French Royalty prior to the Revolution. It’s been depicted in several movies, and parodied in Mel Brooks’ History of the World.

The outdoor patio is nice… and you can drink a beer with your dog.

Fortuna brewery has the best outdoor garden with horse shoes. Organic beer too, for what that’s worth. Of course you have to get past your shallow stereotype of locals. you might have to settle for the brewery cat though.

If you’re talking about the Eel River Brewery I agree. I and my family have had many a meal there. Great place to bring kids, so they can play horseshoes or wander the garden while waiting for food. We go there after soccer games.

Great food too. You can go greasy or healthy, it all tastes good.
