Obama hates America and other thoughts from Fortuna City Councilman Dean Glaser

Dean_Glaser_FortunaNow that Fortuna is fixing to place the motto “In God We Trust” in its council chambers at city hall, KSLG’s John Matthews sat down with Councilman Dean Glaser, who proposed the signage.

Go ahead and listen, and then ask yourself how the heck Glaser ever got elected to a governing body.  The only thing missing from his iconic flag tie and buttons is a tin foil hat.

In the world according to Glaser, shadowy forces are slowly destroying the United States by seeking to eliminate American borders and forfeit our sovereignty. And if you don’t believe him, just ask Gene Owens, a Fortuna Tea Bagger and member of the John Birch Society — a group working to drown the US government, “with God’s help.”

Glaser believes what he wants to believe and neither facts nor Google will change his mind.  Early in the interview Glaser is adamant that unlike other presidents, Barack Obama doesn’t say “God bless America.” This is false.  Obama uses the phrase ad nauseam, as noted in transcripts herehere, here, here, here, here, here, and here, and there are many more examples. How does a God-fearing Christian American miss all those God Blesses? And why should anyone take his other claims seriously?

The Atlantic covered this very issue in January, chastising Obama for using the tired phrase to end his speeches.  The author notes revered Republican President Abraham Lincoln chose not to say it, which must make him a Godless Commie in Glaser’s eyes.

“I need to save my credibility,” Glaser said. “I try to be an informed citizen.”

Right.

Glaser is hoping other Humboldt towns will hoist the “In God We Trust.” He named Blue Lake, Trinidad, Ferndale and Rio Dell as possibilities.

    Glaser and his ilk have always been with us and always will, it’s just that now fact and reason have become their enemy because they can’t argue with fact and reason, just simple-minded belief. How is Glaser helping Fortuna? He’s a councilman who thinks his particular god not only exists, but is actively taking part in every thing from high school football games to the decisions made by city councils.     Now assuming these are the major pressing issues of the day, wouldn’t you think it would make sence that now that we have a change to take back the government and we have a leader who will do all these things we should get behind there movement! Well we do and this leader is not Barak Obama. infact you can almost assure yourself that under his presidency all of the above will no doubt continue if not expand.     Actually, I’m a centrist, leaning toward libertarian, with a slight conservative push. Strangely, that is exactly where I would have placed myself.

    I am always amazed when I go into vote, just who are the people working the registrar desks. I would put those folk’s opinions up against this guy’s and probably find no difference.

    I’m getting out my electric fan here at seven in the mornin’ and opening the doors and windows to blow away a little of the smoke that showed up around five in the mornin’ on this thread —

    The New Republic is not the periodical that published all the racist/homophobic/successionist/anti-semite writings. They reported about them. The racist/homophobic/successionist/anti-semite writings all appeared in newletters that were sent out to “folks” around the country under various titles. All of the titles contained Ron Paul’s name. They included Ron Paul’s Freedom Report, Ron Paul Political Report and The Ron Paul Survival Report. They were one of the ways Paul kept in touch with part of his base in between stints in Congress. While it has been insisted that Paul didn’t write all of the crap that went out under his banner, his campaign spokeman admitted he read at least some of the “incendiary stuff” that went out. I won’t repeat it here, but if you want to sample a whiff, the New Republic article contains quite a bit of it here.

    This quote from TNR appropriately sums up the newsletters:

    In other words, Paul’s campaign wants to depict its candidate as a naïve, absentee overseer, with minimal knowledge of what his underlings were doing on his behalf. This portrayal might be more believable if extremist views had cropped up in the newsletters only sporadically–or if the newsletters had just been published for a short time. But it is difficult to imagine how Paul could allow material consistently saturated in racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, and conspiracy-mongering to be printed under his name for so long if he did not share these views. In that respect, whether or not Paul personally wrote the most offensive passages is almost beside the point. If he disagreed with what was being written under his name, you would think that at some point — over the course of decades — he would have done something about it.

    Here is a January 2008 article that appeared at reason.com — website for a libertarian leaning magazine. It makes it clear that Ron Paul was not only aware of the newsletters, but financed campaigns from them. Here’s how the article concludes:

    Yet those new supporters, many of whom are first encountering libertarian ideas through the Ron Paul Revolution, deserve a far more frank explanation than the campaign has as yet provided of how their candidate’s name ended up atop so many ugly words. Ron Paul may not be a racist, but he became complicit in a strategy of pandering to racists—and taking “moral responsibility” for that now means more than just uttering the phrase. It means openly grappling with his own past—acknowledging who said what, and why. Otherwise he risks damaging not only his own reputation, but that of the philosophy to which he has committed his life.

    You can continue to tell yourself and anyone else who will listen that Ron Paul had no knowledge of or control over these hateful ravings, but the evidence plainly shows otherwise.

    Maybe you should start your own website (as was suggested above) for Humboldt Ron Paul / Libertarian / Anarchist discussion and leave the rest of us to muddle through with local politics from a more traditional perspective. The outrage becomes tiring after a few posts and the pronouncements leave little room for discussion given the anti-everything bent of most of the posts.

    Libertarianism is about as traditional as Scientology. It’s also about as rational.

    Comparing any mainstream political ideology’s rationality to Scientology is a gross exaggeration.

    I do partially agree with you. Libertarianism in the United States places too much emphasis on property rights. The fact that all of this property was stolen from indigenous people and developed on the backs of slaves doesn’t fit into the Libertarian property rights platform. The fact that this still happens is even further from the Libertarian party discussion.

    Being a social anarchist, I agree with some of the small-l libertarian concepts. I don’t think that normative ideals need to be completely rational to be effective. The concept of equality will likely never be reached but it isn’t irrational to try.

    Is it just me or does it look as if like a few of the remarks look as if they are left by brain dead
