ROB ARKLEY: Super exposure

Rob-ArkleyA newish local website called Humboldt Living spotlights Eureka power player Rob Arkley, the force behind the proposed Home Depot big box project on Eureka’s waterfront.

The article, Restructuring Humboldt Bay – Arkley and the New Green Port City of Eureka, is loaded with links, quotes, and “impossible to prove” connections.  The writers falsely finger Arkley as a supporter of the failed recall of District Attorney Paul Gallegos when in fact Arkley was the single largest donor in the effort to defeat the recall.

But it’s hard to argue with the article’s conclusion.

We believe what Robin Arkley wants to do is turn Eureka into a massive “Green Port” city. As he says In his own words, “[w]e have a bay and we have a rail and we’d like to get [the governor's] support for completing the rail.” And this is not surprising since we have been hearing a lot about Green Port cities in the upcoming elections.

When you begin to look at the properties he has purchased or is in the process of establishing zoning on you can also see a distinct pattern. The balloon track property, the rennovation of the Eureka Boardwalk, the Loleta Railroad tract, Ocean View Ranches, the Manila and Samoa dunes, and the land behind Target that Blue Ox Millworks currently resides on. When you put all of that together along with the recent surprise failure of the Pulp Mill project, the purchase of the town of Samoa by Danco, and the direction the Bayshore Mall is headed we believe the picture of an entirely new Humboldt Bay becomes clear.

Robin Arkley is buying up all the land he can on the Humboldt Bay. He is also clearly driving at the least the financial activity behind the Railroad Restoration efforts, the activities behind the Green Port movement and the activities behind the Humboldt Sunshine and Humboldt CPR land zoning movements.

That is not to mention his support for Gov. Schwarzeneggar who is behind the green port. None of this is entirely surprising since Eureka is the last area left on the entire West Coast where a modern port city could potentially and has not yet been established. That makes those lands prime for development and profiteering. And we’ll be the first to admit we even like the idea of Eureka turning into something besides a 5 story pink jail building full of rundown antique and collectible stores. The problem comes when you consider the motives behind the movement may not be what the majority of the county wants. But hey, the majority of the county doesn’t have a billion dollars to spare. Well, there is the 500 million dollar marijuana trade but as we have shown before that movement lacks true vision. Robin Arkley it would appear does not.

Ooo, this website makes me feel oh so warm and cozy inside because it is “Green”.

  2. anonymous says:

would you like to change your ink color to differentiate the quote area from your commentary Heraldo, some people might not get it?

  3. Heraldo says:

The quoted text is a different color, and it’s indented. What browser are you using?

  4. anonymous says:

forgive me for checking the website #2. The tone was so similar I would have sworn it was you (website author).

  5. Heraldo says:

    Some folks are easily confused.

  6. Cleroy says:

I’m confused, the 500 million dollar marijuana trade is a movement?

I thought it was a decentralized (and fuedal) industry.

  7. Not a Eurekan says:

Don’t forget HELP, one of Arkley’s frivilous lawsuit front groups. Suing the County over lack of affordable housing, har har har.

  8. Oldphart says:

“Aggressive tactics, problems with city council members, pruchase of distressed loans, questions, connections, support, dealings, pushing around, inuendo, fabrication and stretching the truth.” This is just so earth shattering.

  9. Anony.Miss says:

The last two sentences don’t make sense. Also, RA does not have a “billion dollars to spare”.

One last thing, does the motive behind doing something matter to people if it doesn’t change the outcome? If the county got a great project, would it turn it down if they didn’t like the reasons behind the developer’s motives? I didn’t understand that comment- the motive behind something and what the county wants as an end result may not be related, if the end result is the same and agreeable to both.

Ooo, this website makes me feel oh so warm and cozy inside because it is “Green”.

This is an example of what happens when you attend art classes on acid.

Who makes gradients that strong? This must be from the basehead school of page layout that did voicesofhumboldt.

  11. Heraldo says:

RA does not have a “billion dollars to spare”.

Probably not. He failed to make the 2009 list of billionaires.

  12. Anonymous says:

You can get a quick sense of an outfit by seeing if they are pretending to be something they are not.

On the “advertising” link, they state they are affiliated with Humboldtgreens.com. Sure enough, this site exists, looks like it had the same designer as HumboldtLiving.com, and has no affiliation with the Humboldt Green Party.

They are also affiliated with HumboldtCounty.com, which is itself a creation of something called YourCounties.com, which is based in North Dakota.

I especially like their explanation of their content:

We claim no right to any images and stories that are reproductions. We kindly appreciate the use of those materials.

  13. Susie Q. says:

I wish I had attended art classes on acid. I was being sarcastic, Mr. Nice.

  14. Mr. Nice says:

Probably not. He failed to make the 2009 list of billionaires.

At least Kenneth Fisher is still on that list. Barely, though. He lost a billion dollars in net worth over this whole disaster. $700 mil loss YTD.

I forgot how much he lost in the dot-com bust… it was something like that though. He’ll probably rebuild just fine.

  15. Mr. Nice says:

I wish I had attended art classes on acid. I was being sarcastic, Mr. Nice.

I realize that you were by your typing inflection.

I was not. Basehead color scheme for real.

  16. humboldtliving says:

Wow this humboldt herald crowd is rough. We’re sensitive creatures at Humboldt Living. Sorry our websites aren’t good enough. We’re trying. I guess taking on the Arkley issue is bound to cause some upheaval ;) Yes, HumboldtCounty.com is currently out of North Dakota. We hunted Ted down and made a deal to bring the site back to Humboldt. Cheers!

  17. Anony.Miss says:

This crowd likes to bitch about everything- don’t take it personally, humboldtliving!!

  18. Mike Buettner says:

    Too much misinformation.

  19. Mr. Nice says:

When you step on your color scheme inspiration, just use more baking soda.

I guess I could offer constructive criticism instead of just harping on y’all. I’m not some kinda color sage, but uh…

On a screen, your primary colors are red, blue, and – as you seem to be aware of – green. Secondary colors are cyan, magenta, and yellow. Tertiary colors are fuschia, orange, lime, aquamarine, light blue, and violet. A problem with your palette is you got analogous colors with nearby tertiary colors for extra (superfluous) highlights. 8/10 people would say a color scheme like this is simply ugly as hell. You could rotate your palette over and it would still be bad news. Let’s say it was violet base, fuschia secondary, magenta highlight and a light blue highlight on top of that. Wack, wack, wack.

To get this pastel look which seems to be the goal, you’d be better served by a triad. Fuschia/light blue would work for strong contrast to the lime green or use a split complementary scheme for more of a subtle effect.

If you are really just all about green, you’d be better served by a monochromatic scheme than some randomly picked highlight colors.

Your biggest flaw is contrast. Bad hue contrast and very bad saturation contrast. This is due to the analogous + random extra colors thing you got going. This is why some of the hovers cause words to practically disappear, lack of useful contrast.

Base green is fine… base green looks lovely in fact. If you use some analogous colors as a subtle background change, that would look fantastic. The same scheme applied to both foreground and background looks hideous. It’s just that the only place in nature where you need a green base contrasted by your choices of highlights and secondaries is in mold and vomit. I’m thinking moldy pumpkin would describe what you got going.

It also seems like the intent here is to work with natural values, but the result is working against natural values. You may try eliminating some colors and inverting the roles to get closer to nature.

I dunno, Carson Park Mofo can probably explain this better than I.

omg design review for websites what is the world coming to?

  21. humboldtliving says:

    Hey Mr. Nice,

Thanks for this info. I’ll keep myself a copy of it for future reference. You must be deep into this. All I did was take a picture of big green bud and take the colors off of it ;)p It falls inline with my psychedelic art training I guess. haha. You guys are great on the Herald. I love all these comments.

  22. Mr. Nice says:

anonymous, I’m just sayin, they are trying way to hard to have their shit lookin like geocities.

  23. Julie says:

“And we’ll be the first to admit we even like the idea of Eureka turning into something besides a 5 story pink jail building full of rundown antique and collectible stores.” Well said. So many people speak ill of Arkley, but who can blame him for wanting to clean up the area and bring some $$$ into the community?

  24. mresquan says:

“RA does not have a “billion dollars to spare”.”

He is hoping to get a chunk of Obama’s stimulus package, for both rail development and certain aspects of the Marina Center.

  25. HumRed says:

The key is for Humboldt County. I’m sure however you are working on a much better project. Where is your track record. Projects, jobs created. What have you cleaned up.

  26. Hank Sims says:

I especially like their explanation of their content:

We claim no right to any images and stories that are reproductions. We kindly appreciate the use of those materials.

I noticed that! That and the Journal’s images and stories!

  27. kushboldt says:

When stealing content, forego admitting theft. Wait for the cease and desist letter.

  28. Hank Sims says:

Or, you know, ask politely and attribute.

  29. Anonymous says:

Robin Arkley Sr. did put up the seed money for the recall effort, and since he also had what ever kind of ego it is that prompts one to name their kid Jr., it lead to frequent confusion, once they were both public figures.

We don’t know if had had more boys, if the would have done like George Foreman or Michael Jackson, and named two of them Jr.

  30. Anony.Miss says:

Have you ever heard of “tradition”? Jeez, give a family a break that did what tons of people have done…

And they did, and no they didn’t.

  31. ThinkingOutLoud2 says:

HumRed you are clearly a Humboldt Treasure. Don’t stop posting. You might be one of my old Humboldt State biology experiments gone screwy, you know, the one with the fruit flys…bar-eyed wild etc….thanks for the entertainment.

  32. DynamoHum says:

Thanks Heraldo, for posting this. It gave me a much broader understanding of the family and the history and thank you Hank, obvious credit goes to the NCJ for all of your stories and insite over the years.

  33. Rose says:

Well, well, well – gee we wonder who could be behind THIS website….
Nicely disguised. Look at the Hot Links

    Behind the Redwood Curtain
    Humboldt Folklife
    Democracy Unlimited
    Humboldt Green Party

How many sites do you guys have anyways? Got a listserve running with this one, too?

  34. Not A Native says:

Too bad for me, they took the article down before I could read it.

But I gather they’re merely an “agglomerator”, hoping to make net$$ attracting eyeballs by picking out content generated elsewhere but got caught agglomerating NCJ material. Those NCJ peasants are sure fussy about maximizing their position in the “value chain”.

  35. Heraldo says:

Too bad they took it down, but good thing I grabbed those last few paragraphs.

  36. Hank Sims says:

    NaN:

That was gentle ribbing. When I get FUSSY, you’ll know it.

Anyhoo, Humboldt Living sent me a nice e-mail a couple of hours ago. Seems like a decent dude.

  37. HumRed says:

    TOL2,

Really, and did you get a degree. I’m so impressed that you had a science class with a lab. Must have been a struggle for you. Amazingly I have a BS in Biology, also a doctorate level degree in science. All that just so I could amuse HSU prog’y dropouts. Somehow I just don’t feel it was about you all. You do in fact think your worth it but reality is that most of you do not contribute shit to human kind.

  38. Not A Native says:

Ahh, the light just came on, multiple personalities! HumRed = Black Flag. Different personna, same delusion of grandeur.

  39. HumRed says:

No delusion at all. Do you have little man syndrome so bad that you have to continue with your inability to diagnosis simple things.

Lets make this simple. I love Humboldt very much. I work hard to do everything I can to promote its welfare, not some bullshit agenda dreamed up by some want to be progy’s. I believe that we live in a republic, and everyone is responsible for themselves. I do not need a big central government. I however most of my life have paid for said government. There are many like me and they are damn tired of it too. Oh teabagger, no don’t have the time. You can run your mouth all you want but people are getting tired of all this bullshit. Karma is for sure and its about ready to hit all of your dumb groups and websites.

  40. Heraldo says:

little man syndrome…some bullshit agenda dreamed up by some want to be progy’s

Deep analysis from Mr. Doo Doo Brains. What was it you said earlier about name-calling?

  41. By the way says:

Those sites are collecting your email addresses. Nice little filing system to see who is saying what.

  42. moviedad says:

“…your primary colors are red, blue, and – as you seem to be aware of – green.” Am I missing something here?

  43. Earth Native says:

“LISTSERV is a registered trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office [5] and the Swedish Patent and Registration Office, PRV.[6] As such, using the word “listserv” to describe a different product or as a generic term for any email-based mailing list of that kind is a trademark misuse. The standard generic terms are electronic mailing list, elist, or email list for the list itself, and email list manager or email list software for the software product that manages the list” from wiki

I guess everyone is doing a little breaking of the law!

  44. By the way says:

This commentary on what Rob is doing brings some real clarity as to his motives and how he sees the big picture. Certainly not the picture I see for Humboldt County, but he could win out unless we get better organized, getting people in office who can blunt his approach and change the direction. Can any of you commit to that end?

  45. Earth Native says:

I’m just wondering why is there such a fear for change? Are people not interested in movement, change, money, improvement? I personally avoid Eureka because it’s dirty, smelly, and full of stores that are old and antiquated. What do the stores in old town think? I understand being against the “big box stores” but tell me what local store is not bringing in products from outside? (well maybe Many Hand Gallery) but in order to make most things we have to bring in resources from outside of here. There is great technology and innovations available and I do not understand the fear of those things are. I say if there is someone that wants to put money into an area to make it better then let it happen! Unless of course you enjoy living in an area that has a high unemployment rate and large amount of people living below the poverty level. I guess it’s really just about dropping out for some of you! But I rather celebrate the beauty of this land that we live on. So I say Make it beautiful so that tourist enjoy coming here and giving us there money!

  46. Anonymous says:

Thanks for that, Randy. Change for its own sake is NOT necessarily good. One could change one’s underwear once in awhile and that would be good. Or one could change from being a toady to being an outright crook and that would not be good. See? Change is not to be feared but it is NOT to be accepted at face value without knowledge.

  47. highboldtage says:

I believe it is possible that some people will drive from Rio Dell to Eureka to shop at a Home Depot, at least until Rio Dell has its own Home Depot, but I don’t really believe that “tourists” will come to Eureka to see a Home Depot. That is whack.

Did you not read all the nice studies I posted? A Home Depot will raise your property taxes, it will increase poverty and unemployment in our community. That is a proven fact.

    have a peaceful day,
    Bill

  48. Earth Native says:

So this is all because of a Home Depot?

and you have a nice day also!
    EN

  49. highboldtage says:

No, its about holding corporate criminals accountable, cleaning up the toxic petri dish that we humans, plants and animals are living in, and also about the economic devastation of big box development. Since you only mentioned the economic aspect that’s what I responded to.

You must be a new hire. Welcome. Do you live in California or someplace like Texas or Louisiana?

I think Eureka and Humboldt County (and Arcata too!) are fantastic places to live, even with their problems. But thanks for your honest assessment of our little town.

    have a peaceful day,
    Bill

    have a peaceful day,
    Bill

  50. Mr. Nice says:

Big box stores don’t move in places to give those places money. That is some dope fiend logic. Big boxes go places to make money. See the diff?

It’s all about stock price. Home Depot ain’t sweating it. All of us are contributing to floating the system that held their bullshit operation up. There wasn’t any reason we needed to build millions more houses than we had people who could afford a house. There was no reason to put a bunch of fresh off the boat immigrants into fucked up mortgages on new houses build out of Chinese melamine crapboard.

The whole fantasy is over. People keep acting like it’s gonna come back, everything is gonna be all pre-9-11 America superpower again. It ain’t. That stimulus money is gonna float our bullshit monetary system for maybe five years. Then, nothing. Less people will build houses next decade, believe that. Home Depot might even pull out, but they don’t sweat pulling out either.

  51. Anony.Miss says:

Hey, what is the Buckeye Conservancy? I tried to look it up and their website is down.

  52. Ed says:

They’re a powerful lobbying group dedicated to the preservation of resource lands until the market for beef or timber declines, then they want to subdivide.

  53. Mr. Nice says:

    Anony.Miss:

Google results for every page indexed from buckeyeconservancy.org

Used the cached and view as html links.

After that disappears, all that is left is the wayback machine versions.

  54. Heraldo says:

The Buckeye says they support the rural lifestyle but want development options wide open. Currently it’s headed by former Pacific Lumber apologist Ruthann Schulte.

  55. Anony.Miss says:

There are lots of ranchers (and they are not particularly successful or wealthy ones) involved in it who say they are trying to preserve their lifestyle, somehow save their property to pass down to their kids to keep that traditional ranching/farming culture alive.

  56. Anonymous says:

Their idea of preserving a lifestyle is to rent the land to tenant farmers while building country homes for the kids and grand-kids.

  57. Ryan Hurley says:

“Probably not. He failed to make the 2009 list of billionaires.”

Ah, the Forbes billionaire list. Here’s the thing: Getting on that list is *sorta* like competing to be Miss Universe. Sure, the contestants are pretty and all, but there are waaaay hotter chicks out there.

Those whose wealth is established by a multitude of sources (Buffett, Gates, the Waltons) have no choice but to show up on the annual Forbes billionaire list.

    As for the others…?

They send Forbes copies of their tax returns and dividend statements like the greedy *&#^@ they are, knowing that if their name appears on the list they’ll be entitled to even greater perks than their money already allows.

I’m informed that Rob has never pursued getting his name on the list, although I don’t know the reason. I will speculate that his company has suffered along with everyone else since the heydays of this decade — reports that his Alaskan getaway are being put on the market seem to indicate that.

But, as a privately held company, few individuals know what Security National is actually worth at any given moment. It’s not like you can follow it on the DJIA.

  58. Cheese Dick says:

So I hear Rob and Kurt hissed at each other?
    Carol? anyone?
