Eureka residents can sign up for a new service that alerts them to crime in their neighborhood.
Crime info is uploaded nightly to CrimeReports.com, according to a press release by the Eureka Police Department, and will be emailed to users who provide an address to focus the reports. The alerts will include incident type, date, location, distance from citizen’s address, event identification/case number, and a brief description of the incident.

Crime alert!
Incident Type: Abuse of Eureka
Date: October 27th
Location: Balloon Tract
Distance from citizen’s address: A few miles
Brief description of the incident:
Yet another big box development thoughtlessly carried forward by yet another pro-business, pro-jobs city council.
Whine on.
Damn Heraldo- There’s a lot of criminals in Eurtweeka!
I look forward to the white collar crime map.
Pro-minimum wage jobs city council. FTFY.
Heraldo bloggers will definitely never be involved in white collar crime.
I don’t think I want to know. And I’m sure Jeff Leonard doesn’t!
As this map clearly illustrates there is very little crime in the non-westside part of Eureka.
Most of the crime listed is people beating each other up or tweekers breaking into their neighbors cars/houses to steal cd’s, eg not real crime.
eurekite:
Non-west side = more ruralistic features and living styles. This map will be filled much more with crime locations and “mapping” tools when in-filling begins it’s initial and long-term impacts.

I’d rather have street sweeping. We’re starting to
pay the bad guys on the West Side to come your way.
This is cool stuff, but it’s a little troubling that this CrimeReports thing seems to have the data locked up. Especially if the city is paying for it, as it seems to be.
There should be a way to get a data dump of this sucker.
cool thanks Heraldo! Passing it out to the neighbors next… big smiley face!
Tell them you found it at the Humboldt Herald.
Yes, thank you Heraldo for letting us know and EPD for seeing the need for crime awareness by the public. As This builds with new data, some of you are going to have your eyes opened. I hope there is not just one dot for the Bay Shore Mall. That is very misleading. I do know that EPD is dealing with a lot more than other city PD’s our size in CA. That is why Glass and Atkins have pushed so hard to keep full funding for EPD, even with a very tight city budget. Interest that EPD has seen the wisdom of using the internet to keep Eureka informed and City Hall doesn’t see the need to stream city council meetings on the web. Somebody at City Hall really wants to control every thing the city does, including the flow of public information. There are a lot of TV dishes in town and the vast majority don’t get local public channels.
Can’t believe Denny’s isn’t on that map. Oh, wait, there it is, assault, sodomy, other sexual assault. Nevermind.
What will the map represent? I guess it will be up to the viewers to interpret the data. Will the picture depict a true representation of where in the city crime is occurring, or will it only show where patrols are heaviest. Or will it rely on 911 calls?
Never mind, pointless.
Oakland PD has a better map. They have syringe icons for drugs. I’m pretty sure they use dollar signs for dice games.
But, Mr Nice, what icon would they use for prostitution? Yecch!
