Lots of firetrucks on 3rd and F Streets in Eureka. The fire appears to be above the Bead Shoppe.

Heard the fire alarm go off twice tonight in Loleta – I don’t know if they were call for more help for this fire.

Greyhound Motel on FIRE! (old town.. now)
Date: 2009-12-31, 7:03PM PST
the building is in flames and they got chainsaws goin inside, what do you wanna bet its a junkie or drunk with a greasy stove in that dive.
will it spread to other buildings? cmon EFD!
Robo call from EFD said there was a broken water main involved too. Residential water pressure near 7th & N streets was a dribble for about an hour. It has been restored now. Appreciate the EFD robo call.
Why do we have no water now?
We have full water pressure at 7th & N streets in Eurekat at 9:15 p.m.
Thanks….
Still low water pressure at G and 14th. I counted 8 trucks on this fire. A lot of smoke coming from the roof over the Bead Shoppe. They had the ladder on the ladder truck getting firemen and chain saws on the roof. Hoses going into the building from the alley side near B of A. One of the firefighters told me that the fire was trapped between walls and they were trying to vent it. This was the problem with the Russ building fire a couple of years ago, just a block away from this one. I got a robo call too. Our firefighters are very good at what they do. I was impressed. Can’t say the same for our water delivery system. Should have been upgrading the system years ago instead of diverting the water fund. I can hardy wait for the big quake to hit. I wonder how we will put out all the fires if that happens. It makes me wonder who has been minding the store all these years.
minding the store… isn’t that the city manager’s job?
Oops. That would be the guy who has been busy putting out fires of his own.
Watched the fire from before the trucks arrived- glad it was put out fairly quickly. We were going to dinner and the flames were shooting out the top of the building. Yes, Old Greyhound Hotel across from Ritz in about the middle of the block. I also heard there was a smaller fire near or at Stantons.
Interesting story that just re-appeared within the last 1/2 day in the T-S regarding another roof-top fire in Eureka involving a business.

I stayed there for awhile in 1982. That whole block is infested with billions of cockroaches. I still have the occasional nightmare.
So I wonder where they’ll run to?
ummm…. the Ritz?
I’m guessing that everyone understands what would happen if our fire fighters did not act effectively to control fires that occur in Old Town, where dry old Redwood buildings without fire-stops in the walls are so closely-spaced.
The fire fighters act in the realm of physical reality (not in the realm of words) to protect our historic district (and our neighborhoods) from ruin.
I’m pretty sure everybody feels as grateful as I do for the work our fire fighters do.
Yes, we have the best firefighters, and I am thankful they are a paid and well trained team. Most of the cities in Humboldt have volunteer departments. The emergency robo call system worked. That is all in our favor when a big quake hits. Water is our weak link.
If all else fails, is there a system to pump salt water from the Bay to fight catastrophic fires?
Our emergency personnel did what they felt was necessary in an emergency situation. I’m thankful that it’s not me making these decisions and am grateful for the job they do. No second guessing from this untrained civilian. Thanks guys, you are awesome!
