The Audacity of Jeff

Fourth District supervisorial candidate Jeff Leonard is sporting a succinct little cartoon on his campaign website.  The pictorial depiction of campaign money in Humboldt’s most contentious race comes from local cartoonist Joel Mielke.

Don’t just hate to admit it!

  2. Heraldo says:

Jeff makes some, uh, interesting points on his website. He says:

I am the only candidate for county Supervisor who voted for this clean-up, and the only candidate who attended the Coastal Commission meeting in San Francisco, hoping to be heard, but denied a chance to speak for you.

Of course, Bonnie Neely was there, and she is the only candidate who apparently has any inkling about how “substantial issue” hearings at the Coastal Commission work.

Leonard also says he’s the only one who voted for the clean-up of the Balloon Track, which is funny since (1) there’s much disagreement about whether it’s really a clean-up, and (2) Bass would have been all over that vote if she had a voting position on the city council.

Jeff also says he held a town hall meeting on the so-called clean-up plan, but omits the part about how the Council shot down the meeting when it was proposed by Councilman Larry Glass. Now all the sudden it’s Jeff’s campaign baby.

  3. A Non A Me says:

Jeff is struggling to gain traction, but he is on the slippery slope of failure. He just should get out of the race, money goes to those who are seen as winners, and he has no money.

  4. highboldtage says:

Shouldn’t the cartoon have him riding a skateboard?

Actually after seeing the money figures in the TS I am feeling sympathetic to the underdog today though I would not vote for him. Leonard’s big task it to achieve the run-off. It will be difficult but not impossible. One of his opponents could implode.

    have a peaceful day,
    Bill

  5. You see folks, that is just it about Bonnie – she understands the processes and when to manipulate or not to manipulate them. So, arguing certain stuff is pointless when it is “all about the process”, like former supe Mr. John Woolley said.

  6. Heraldo says:

Jeff wanted special privileges at the Coastal Commission. Either that or he simply didn’t educate himself because he was too busy waving Arkley’s flag.

  7. Seven says:

I heard that Jeff spent plenty of time yuckin’ it up with CUE IV’s team of lawyers at that particular CCC meeting

  8. Oldphart says:

Jeff didn’t “want special privileges” at the Coastal Commission meeting. the ccommission can, with a vote, listen to anyone that comes before them. Since Bonnie, who represents the area as a supervisior, did not make a motion to listen, the rest of the Commissioners figured that was that. then Peter Douglas pontificates for a long enough time that they could actually have been heard and that would have been that. the Commission did not have to take any action at the meeting, just listen. You need to understand how that suff works.

Government IS a process, Henchman of Justice. Shouldn’t you be out knocking on doors?

  10. I should be doing a lot of things, but big bad government forces me to do other things that takes away my time and causes me to schedulize my actions – like blogging the truth!

Although, instead of walking around in the rain yesterday, I should have waited until today while blogging yesterday; but, things work out the way they work out I suppose. Thanks for the suggestion!!!

  11. Heraldo says:

It would have taken 3 commissioners to be convinced that no substantial issue existed with the permit to allow the rare occurance of a presentation on the matter. Unfortunately for team Arkley the commissioners are smarter than that.

Even if a presentation had been allowed Jeff was clearly not the most qualified to speak on it in the limitated time that would have been allowed. So, why did he go on the taxpayers dime? To “ramp it up,” as he said.

And it looks so impressive on his website.

  12. Plain Jane says:

The CCC discussed allowing them to speak but said no. They were invited to submit their statements in writing. It was just a campaign stunt since Arkley’s attorneys were able to make a better case than his stooges and the City of Eureka had sent their written statement for consideration. Who paid for that trip anyway?

  13. Plain Jane says:

    LOL Heraldo.

  14. Tapperass says:

Well, it is that tine of the year when the NCAA has its national tournament for Basketball.

I would have to say that Bonnie and Virginia are #1 seeds.

From what is being written here, Jeff is like a #16 seed.

In the history of the NCAA tourney, no #16 seed has upset a #1 seed. He has to face two #1 seeds!

Just another way to look at it…

  15. High Finance says:

It is a little surprising to see all the liberals here cheering the big money choking the supervisor’s race.

Instead of supporting the candidate big money opposes, you are telling him he should just give up?

  16. titan says:

What similarity to “The Little Engine That Could,” which I am sure was Jeff’s intention, or “Never fear, Underdog is here.” Probably won’t work though.

And I wonder how long Virginia will stay a top seed, especially if her dirty laundry is aired somewhere other than her front porch.

  17. Anonymous says:

If Jeff Leonard hopes to succeed, he will need to exercise some control over his mother and her tendency to go all “mad dog” over anyone who may criticize her boy. Her behavior during his last run for office was, shall we say, unseemly.

  18. Fred Mangels says:

It is a little surprising to see all the liberals here cheering the big money choking the supervisor’s race.

I was thinking the same thing. Those of you always bemoaning all the money going into elections, here’s your chance. Vote for the candidate with the least money.

  19. Plain Jane says:

While many liberals are leery of candidates being financed by corporations, their records and agendas should always be the most important factor in deciding who to vote for since it is an indication of whether they will work for their constituents or the corporate campaign contributors. Only really simplistic people make decisions on who to support on peripheral issues. Reminds me of people who supported Palin because she could gut a moose and stoked their libidos.

  20. Anonymous says:

Yeah, Jane, kinda how Clinton was an aphrodisiac to the soccer moms of america.

  21. Anonymous says:

    Exactly PJ!

If Bass were not in this race, Leonard would have taken all the developer’s largess…He’s proven himself to them time after time in Eureka…haphazard zone changes, eliminate the research for the best-use of the Balloon Tract, sell Eureka’s only community garden for more low-wage retail, use public funds to lobby for a development promising more crappy jobs that already saturate Eureka…

    ENOUGH!

  22. Plain Jane says:

He was that, but he was also highly intelligent (and a Rhodes Scholar) which is an important factor in a president and an aphrodisiac to intelligent women as well.

  23. anon. says:

Whenever I see the commercial on T.V. about the Hamberger and the guy with the small hands, I think about jeff..Maybe that could be part of his slogan. I dont know I guess I just want to hear honesty, about issues and let me decide who I most align with. I think we will soon hear some things about Virginia that she isnt gonna like. Just remember, We are all responsible for our actions and decissions.

  24. Anonymous says:

    Heraldo,

whats wrong with telling people the truth, monitor your spin machine all you want but you should post some facts

the trip to the Coastal Commission was subsequently paid for by a private citizen who was fed up with bonnie’s and the coastal commissions bs.

its easier to throw mud at people who don’t think like you isn’t it

  25. Heraldo says:

Ok, Jeff only intended to spend taxpayer money on that political stunt, but a similarly confused private citizen reimbursed the city. Better?

  26. Plain Jane says:

Was that a campaign contribution or a personal gift?

  27. Spongy Morel says:

    Mielke cracks me up.

  28. Anonymous says:

I’m not irritated at Jeff. He seems like a good guy. I am irritated at those annoying people who keep trying to sell me Mona Vie acai berry juice and claim they are going to retire before they’re 30.

  29. High Finance says:

I’m not irritated at jeff, the berry juice commercials or even at slow drivers.

But jerkoffs like the nasty poster at 2.13pm really rile me.

  30. Really? says:

the trip to nowhere was covered by a private citizen?
anonymously? or do we know the person and the amount?

  31. titan says:

As Heraldo pointed out, Jeff made his trip with the idea that it was the city’s dime. The citizen came forward after the fact. Bottom line, he didn’t pay for it himself and almost certainly knew it would be futile from the get-go.

  32. Heraldo says:

Whether it was actually paid by the private citizen is in question. But the trip cost the city $1,876. The citizen wrote a letter to the editor about possibly paying for it but it may not have gone further than that.

  33. A-Nony-Mouse says:

Judging from Jeffy’s signs, he still believes he’s running for CITY office. Myrtletown and Cutten residents should take note. Jeffy then campaigns on his ‘Balloon Track’ record which, incidentally, has almost nothing to do with the County. His questionable judgement was underlined when he called the Marina Center EIR “one of the ten best EIRs I’ve ever read”, especially when it was evident at council meetings that he did not know much of what was in it.
Virginia, nice as she might be, follows the Tyson line and gushes over anything Arkley. Just ask her about the “wonderful” big box coming to the waterfront just so she can get cheap stuff.

What a pair of Twinkies! What visionaries! They’ve got Eureka right up there with DogPatch, USA.

  34. Curiousofbeingfoundout says:

I say listen to the real debates and not the sounds bytes and then make a decision. the money is one thing, but the if you find facts, not the same old rhetoric, you find the winner.

  35. titan says:

Twinkies is right, cakey sweet outer layer & nothing but fluff inside.

  36. Steak 'n Eggs says:

I get the sense that Jeff has more in common with the average Eurekan than the others. He strikes a chord with those that are born and raised here, and are struggling to raise kids, pay bills, and be involved with their family. His wife is a fantastic teacher, and am grateful she is teaching somebody very close to me. He is about as close as you get to an “average” guy in this election, and thus if the voters show up he will do fine.

  37. the reasonable anonymous says:

Is that the best we can hope for in our leaders these days: Averageness?

Then again, given how many elected officials are so far Below Average in some key areas (especially ethics and fortitude), maybe it’s understandable that being Average is now considered a good thing.

  38. High Finance says:

The opposite of “average” is not always “extraordinary”. You can never claim Bonnie is even above average.

So maybe Jeff is average. But in this particular race, average is the best we’re going to get. Apparently all the best candidates were scared away by the Dem machine money & the Arkley pal’s money.

  39. Anon4now says:

Steak ‘n eggs has it right.
Jeff has an incredible ability to thread the needle of majority voter opinion and is smart enough to know how to advertise his actions to the public so that he gets credit for what he does. He is also smart enough to take credit for things that he didn’t do as long as it helps him. He knows that it mostly comes off as sour grapes for any of his opponents to point out that he has just scammed them. The average voter doesn’t know the real story and none of the papers around here are bold enough to point it out with perhaps the exception of the NCJ. My bet is that people supposedly “in the know” are going to figure out fairly quickly that Jeff can win this thing and money will start to come in as people don’t want to be caught supporting the wrong candidate. He doesn’t need much to make a credible race. He will also work harder than the other candidates and that goes a long way toward winning over average voters. If Bonnie and Virginia aren’t worried, they should be. There may be a run-off but I wouldn’t be willing to pick the two finalist just yet.

  40. anymouse says:

I asked and no check for that amount ever came in to pay for Jeff’s trip.
That said, If Jeff wants to win he needs to show how he’s different and better than Virginia or he doesn’t have prayer with the anti bonnie voters.

  41. Jeff the odd man out says:

It’s funny becuase in a two way race, Jeff against Bonnie he does better than Virginia against Bonnie. but put him in a three way race, and finishes a poor third. I guess that’s his roll pull those votes away so Virginia can be in the run off. If Virginia was to back out? Bonnie versus Jeff, Now that would be a race.

  42. titan says:

Well at least there are no rumors about Jeff and the city manager. That should put him on a rung above Virginia.

  43. the reasonable anonymous says:

Because we should vote based on rumor?

  44. titan says:

You bet. Lotta stuff in this town happens because of it. Where have you been

  45. moviedad says:

With the immensity and power of the Joel Meilke cartoon empire supporting one of the candidates; the others might as well go home.

  46. Time to get real says:

A lot to do about very little.

  47. Plain Jane says:

    Hilarious, Moviedad.

  48. High Finance says:

Never misunderestimate the ability of the Bonnie camp to spread rumors.

As you can see above, they will resort to anything.

  49. A Non A Me says:

Bonnie would win in a head to head with Jeff, but not against Virginia. So all of this Jeff, Jeff, cheering is just another way of saying that you are for Bonnie.
Bonnie has an unlimited capacity for negative and you just wait until close to the election, and all Hell will break loose from the Bonnie camp.

  50. Rebar says:

“So all of this Jeff, Jeff, cheering is just another way of saying that you are for Bonnie”
No, it’s a way of saying you ar for Jeff. Duh.

  51. A-Nony-Mouse says:

Jeff and Virginia have plenty of their own ‘negative’ and won’t need Bonnie to provide it. I couldn’t tell if Anon4now was praising Jeffy or calling him out for taking credit for the work of others. In school they called that plagerism and it was highly frowned upon. In fact, it could get you thrown out. Jeffy does fine at the things that don’t really count. The skateboard park and the zoo, while very nice things, are frills far removed from the real nuts and bolts of running the city. When Jeffy has to do budgets for Public Safety or Public Works, he ascends into LaLa lLand and claims we can have it all. Reality? Why bother? He’s a nice enough guy but when it comes to the realities of running our county, let alone our city, he ain’t got it.

  52. A-Nony-Mouse says:

Virginia’s harder to characterize because she does NOT take positions on anything beyond all things Arkley. She hasn’t shown me anything that suggests she has a clue about county matters. That means she would be more likely to take marching orders from RA, just because she wouldn’t know what to do herself. I like her, too, but it’s throwing rookies at a tough job that needs knowledge andexperience to do properly.
And HiFi, you couldn’t pick a stock if your life depended on it so why should we expect you to do any better with a candidate?

  53. High Finance says:

You very well might be right Mouse.

But Bass Taking marching orders from RA will be far better than the current situation. Bonnie is just taking marching orders from the tribes, Mike Thompson & the Dem machine. Then she gives the orders to Jimmy Smith & the weak minded newbies.

  54. FinacialMeltDown says:

How would Bass taking marching orders from RA be any better? Would she allow developers to thwart the public process? Would she shit can environmental impact reports because they are a waste of time and money and infringe on private property owners rights to do anything they want with their little chunk of dirt that will make them the most profit? Would she use her position on the CCC to influence the board to go against it’s own directives and pass anything RA wants?

  55. Anonymous says:

Unfortunately, what the Mouse says about Virginia is true. Virginia doesn’t have much knowledge of the real goings on in the county and when apprised of such has to ask someone else what to do. That someone isn’t necessarily RA and may merely be her husband, but she does have to ask. Jeff is going to be very competitive with her voters. Virginia’s advantages are that she IS honest and ISN’T conniving and self serving like Jeff.

Maybe Bonnie isn’t so bad after all.

  56. A-Nony-Mouse says:

Let’s see. Bonnie listens to tribes, Congressmen, and a majority of Humboldt County voters (Dems). Meanwhile Virginia listens to RA. HMMM. What’s wrong with this picture?

I’ve known Jimmy Smith a long time. I might not agree with him on everything but I can assure ypou that he’s definitely NOT weak minded.

  57. Anonymous says:

Congressmen almost always support the incumbent and when they don’t it means something. Gallegos, for instance may not get the endorsement. I suspect Bonnie’s tribal support is over HCOG. Any other reasons?

  58. A-Nony-Mouse says:

Jeffy’s signs say “Expect more, Eureka”
And I do! Much more than Jeffy, anyway.

  59. Country Mouse says:

Jeff sold his Democratic soul to Arkley eons ago. What could you expect from a guy whose dad is a Eureka developer? I know a friend of his who told me that he was more of a “real” Democrat when he first ran for office. According to this person, somewhere along the way Jeff made a conscious decision to hook his wagon to the Arkley train. Personally I think that may have been his vote back in 2005 to kill the Balloon Track Master Plan. Maybe he saw how things worked in Arkleyville, that if you crossed Tyson or Arkley in the slightest way, you were toast.

    *sigh*

    he coulda been a contendter.

  60. mresquan says:

Well fairly recently Jeff was the victim of an Arkley public berating where apparently he repeatedly told Jeff that he was worthless,so Jeff must have been doing something right.
