Jefferson school vote Tuesday

January 31, 2011

The Eureka City Council will vote Tuesday on how — or whether — to proceed on the purchase of Jefferson school.

The previous City Council voted unanimously in September to approve the purchase, but the new council — with only one voting member left from the previous council — voted to postpone so they could learn more about it.  Tuesday’s vote will be a big deal.  The meeting starts at 6pm.

Below the jump is a letter to the Council from Heidi Benzonelli of the Westside Community Improvement Association.

SURPRISE! Tyson thru 2012

January 29, 2011

The Eureka City Council will vote Tuesday to extend city manager Dave Tyson’s at-will contract through the end of 2012.

Tyson had announced his retirement last year, but changed his mind sometime around the time the Brady Bunch swept into power.

“Putty in my hands,” he surely thought.

Tyson’s last contract expired at the end of 2010, but the city council approved 3-month extension in December.

The extension follows Tyson’s rough year in 2010 where he had to negotiate a $200,000 settlement to cover for his own alleged actions (and wrongful in-actions) that cost the city 100 G’s and its stellar reputation.

By his aftershave, ye shall know him

January 28, 2011

WHICH local elections kingpin snuck into a meeting of the Progressive Democrats Club last night to spy on the opposition and furiously scribble notes to prepare for the next battle to seat pre-programmed tea-partyesque know-nothings into positions of power?

Gremlins

January 27, 2011

The Reasonable Anonymous, known more often here as simply “tra” just posted the following comment.  Due to the same glitch he describes I can’t leave a comment in response.

For some reason, on my screen, the fields for “Name” and “Email” are autofilling as “Mitch” and “[email address redacted]”  Some kinda little gremlin in the system somewhere, I guess.

Just thought you should know that this little quirk is happening again.  If this keeps up it could become a real annoyance as sooner or later I’m going to fail to notice that the name field is autofilled with Mitch’s (or somebody else’s) name, and as a result, the comment will end up posting under the wrong name.

And if this is happening on my computer, I assume it’s happening to other folks as well.

Journal gets new editor

January 26, 2011

UPDATE: News of a new editor appears to come as a big surprise — even to those close to the Journal. At least one columnist for the paper didn’t know until the Blogthing post this morning. After a series of “WTF” tweets following the big announcement, the Twitterverse is strangely quiet.

###

Breaking news over at the North Coast Journal Blogthing.

Tom Abate, a founding member of the NCJ, is moving back to Humboldt to take the helm, while current editor Hank Sims will “play a crucial role in this evolutionary process by working with Abate as web editor and senior staff writer while also continuing his popular weekly column, the Town Dandy.”

The change is being billed as an “expansion” that will “develop a hybrid form of journalism.”

January 25, 2011

Look out, Humboldt.  Our neighbor to the North is on the verge of becoming an economic superpower when it’s Wal-Mart moves to a 24-hour format.

Clearly, Del Norte County’s financial woes are over. Big box stores are known by many Humboldt County and city officials to be the ultimate fountain of prosperity.

The new 24-7 consumer opportunity will prepare shoppers for the Super Wal-Mart, scheduled for construction this year.  All hail.
