Nurses Call for Tax on Wall Street, Host Soup Kitchen in Old Town Eureka

August 31, 2011

[Press Release] — RNs to sponsor soup kitchens, food pantries, speak outs on the need for jobs, healthcare, education, housing – and outline the RN plan on how to pay for it.

From Maine to California, nurses, joined by others fed up with the ongoing economic crisis, will call on Congress members in their local district offices September 1 to support a tax on Wall Street financial speculation, a revenue source fast becoming an international norm, to pay for healing the nation.

Events, from soup kitchens to help feed the hungry and homeless, to community speak outs to street theater are planned from major urban centers like Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Orlando, to smaller cities and towns, such as Corpus Christi, TX., Marquette, MI., Bakersfield, CA., Dayton, OH., and Worcester, MA. National Nurses United is sponsoring the actions.

Nurses will visit the home offices of Republicans and Democrats alike, with a common message. Everyday Americans are hurting, and they need jobs, healthcare, housing, quality education, nutrition, and a secure retirement, not more cuts, as has been the obsession of Congress.

Join Nurses in Eureka for a Main Street Action: 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Soup Kitchen at 2nd Street and F Street. At 11:30 a.m. a delegation will head to Representative Mike Thompson’s office at 317 3rd Street, Eureka.

Bat N’ Rouge 2011

August 30, 2011

Tickets on sale now!

Press release below.

(Arcata, Calif.) Last year Bat N’ Rouge raised more than $20,000 and helped purchase the Stromberg property for the Arcata Ridge Trail. This trail will eventually run from Sunny Brae to West End Road.

The event is a collaborative effort between the Eureka Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Queer Humboldt, the Humboldt Trails Council and many community members and is the kick off event for Humboldt County Pride weekend.

This year we are doing it bigger and better and we hope to stuff the Arcata Ballpark with more than the 1200 people who attended last year.

Bat N’ Rouge – softball with a twist, will take place at the Arcata Ball Park on Friday, September 9, 2011 beginning at 6:45pm.

The Arcata Ridge Trail Committee has been working on raising funds for the purchase of parcels between Arcata Community Forest and Sunny Brae Community Forest. The acquisition of the parcels will provide permanent protection of open space, timber resources and watershed values, wild life habitat and corridors and access for recreation.

Bat N’ Rouge is a wacky softball game with all the bells and whistles of a convential softball game including our fabulous PPQ’s (Pom Pom Queens). the rules have been waived, cheating is a great thing, and homeruns can be purchased. The entire game is choreographed by the Eureka Sisters of Perpetual Indulgenced with live music and traditional game sound effects. Community members are excited to change from their traditional clothing into “drag garb” and batter-up , all while raising money for a great cause. Food and beer from Plaza Catering, Big Pete’s and Lost Coast Brewery will be available for purchase and a special All-Star VIP section will be offered in the picnic area where attendees will be wined and dinned in a more exclusive manner.

Media contacts please email travis@venatoremedia.com for tickets. For more information call 845-3873 or visit eurekasisters.org or humtrails.org. Tickets are available on line at eurekasisters.org or at any HealthSPORT locations, Lost Coast Brewery, Good Relations, Arcata Exchange and People’s Records.

Lack of leadership paralyzes supervisors on multifamily rezoning

August 25, 2011

They make $80,000/year to helm the good ship Humboldt County. But when it comes to making a move to rezone parcels for multifamily housing to comply with state law (and a lawsuit settlement agreement), some County Supervisors wring their hands and moan “I can’t.”

Supervisor Mark Lovelace vented his frustration on Facebook and KHUM yesterday, saying the Board needs to make a decision and live with the consequences, rather than blame county staff.  He said staff has done everything asked of them by Supervisors and can’t be blamed for the board’s failure to vote and move forward.

Here’s the KHUM interview, hosted by Mike Dronkers and Hank Sims:

County sued over Forster-Gil development

August 24, 2011

Would-be developers of the Ridgewood Village project in Cutten are suing the County of Humboldt for stalling and flip-flopping on the project.

The lawsuit alleges the county included the property in a list of specific parcels approved for its affordable housing inventory as a part of its Housing Element in August 2010. But just last week the county denied the project a zoning clearance and therefore a building permit.

Forster-Gil also alleges the Environmental Impact Report has hit a brick wall in county offices where no movement has been made on it for months.

Full report in the Times-Standard.

Quote of the Day

August 23, 2011

It seems very disturbing, as a pastor, to be using the Bible to induce the victim to participate — in essence seducing her with Bible passages. — Humboldt Superior Court Judge Bruce Watson at the sentencing of former Arcata pastor Dino Cardelli, who got the maximum prison sentence allowed (18 years) Monday for sexual abuse of his daughters.
