New details on Eureka’s super secet big box tenant

The not-so-mysterious mystery retailer planning to set up shop at the Bayshore Mall will have a pharmacy, groceries, clothes and dog food, according to North Coast Journal publisher Judy Hodgson.

The old Gottschalks space will be “substantially demolished” to make way for the new tenant, the NCJ confirmed.

Eureka City Manager Dave Tyson knows which big box is coming, but is adding it to the giant pile of secrets he keeps at city hall.

How many miles will customers have to walk between departments within the store?

  2. Rich Morris says:

I worked as a set up manager for Walmart for a number of years. Shade O’Quinn is one of firms they use to do the planning for their new and remolded Sam’s and Walmarts. There is no doubt what so ever that Walmart is the store going into the old Gottchalks location. Mr. O’Quinn is currently designing and remodeling all the new and older Walmart stores on the west coast. Walmart is the new tenant at Bayshore Mall and the last nail in the coffin for Ray’s Food Place.

I’d love to see some community action to encourage people to boycott, would love to see them staying away in droves. But Eureka is my hometown and I have a hunch there will be locals lined up for a mile to get their fill of Cheetos and cheap flip flops. Yippee.

  4. SNaFU says:

Welcome aboard WalMart, lookin’ forward to checkin’ out the locals. > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RzcvFLPg1A

  5. Plain Jane says:

I’ve heard of “buy and return” protests which cost them more money than just not shopping there.

  6. Walt says:

How does Walmart benefit from slithering around in the dark? If everyone LOVES Walmart, why the secrecy? Since we know everyone DOESN’T love them, does the secrecy indicate Walmart “haters” COULD do something to stop them?

Is Cal-Trans awake? Changing a building use to a grocery should require a traffic study at the north end of that strip mall.

  8. larry says:

    ray’s sucks anyhow
    humdumbs will love wall mart
    eureka is full of mutants

I’m glad to see Pattison Christensen a way to legally steal people’s money after years of doing it illegally at 99.1 KJNY. That guy is the lowest of the low. It was only a matter of time before he found his way to Walmart.

A Wal-Mart is horrifying news. Just horrifying. I will never go to the Bayshore Mall again. Never.

HA HA nothin’ you can do!

  12. pattycakes says:

It’s fitting really. Eureka is low class all the way around, low class priorities, low class city manager and clown council, low class team arkley, and now the store that screams low class.

  13. Tapperass says:

Let them come! I look forward to seeing some of the locals around here on this website:

    People of Walmart

  14. Matt says:

“Walmart is the new tenant at Bayshore Mall and the last nail in the coffin for Ray’s Food Place.”

    That’s too bad. I like that Ray’s.

  15. Curley says:

What a classy comment from you pattycakes.

  16. Bolithio says:

Im not going to walmart. But Im sure the poor, which are numerous in eureka, will. Shame on any of you that look down on them.

  17. Plain Jane says:

Walmart doesn’t sell the same models as quality stores, even though they may have the same brands. Buying Walmart products which cost 75% the price of quality products but have to be replaced twice as often is only a good deal to fools. It’s not really any different than thinking the small box of cereal is a better deal than the big box because it costs less.

It’s really revealing the amount of “locals” denigration occurring here. Where are you from? That “Us vs. Them” thing is really helping solve our local issues.

  19. Kubla says:

I’ll still go to the Bayshore Mall, but only to pick up food from the Mexican food place in the food court. Their carnitas is the best!

  20. Anonymous says:

The people of Walmart website would easily be usurped by a people of eureka winco website. Just sayin.

  21. Plain Jane says:

I don’t shop at Winco often and never late at night, but I’ve never seen anyone that comes close to the people on that Walmart site. A little ragged, not too clean, but nothing crazy.

  22. Anonymous says:

I think that the Bayshore Mall name should be changed to the Grand Mal since so many people are having seizures over Wal-Mart’s second coming to the North Coast.

  23. tra says:

pattycakes said “It’s fitting really. Eureka is low class all the way around, low class priorities, low class city manager and clown council, low class team arkley, and now the store that screams low class.”

As recognition for your thoughful analysis, and the outstanding sense of “class-consiousness” you have displayed, I would like to nominate you to compete for a very prestigious award:

  24. A-Nony-Mouse says:

Does the concept of the “lowest common denominator” mean anything to anyone anymore?

Why do you and others like you hang around here if it is as bad as you profess? Wouldn’t you be happier elsewhere? I am sure many of us would be happier without your attitude.

  26. Bolithio says:

There certainly is a common thread of arrogance over the ‘foolish poor’ shared by the right and left. Eat them!

  27. tra says:

Looks like we now have confirmation that it’s going to be a Wal-Mart:

    http://www.northcoastjournal.com/blogthing/2011/08/04/its-walmart/

A commenter on the NCJ blogthing googled up a Big Box contractor (Millcon) who lists one of their subcontractors (R & O Construction) as being hired for a job doing acoustic tiles for “WalMart-Eureka.”

  28. Not A Native says:

Can’t speak for pattycakes, but its common for altruistic compassionate people to sojourn in primitive and uncouth places, making the effort to help those who are living in squalid and deplorable circumstances.

What VISTA used to do, sponsoring people to serve in wretched and backward US places, today is done by AmeriCorps. And typically, the clients of these services, out of ignorance, fear, and arrogance, cling to their status quo and perceive incorporating improvements to their condition as an elitist affront to their culture. Ignorance is bliss, whether it be the slums of Appalachia, East LA, South Philly, or most of Humboldt.

  29. Decline To State says:

Looks like we now have confirmation that it’s going to be a Wal-Mart

Oops, no we don’t again. The Journal’s Blog Thing just made a correction. R & O is doing the ceiling work at the new Yreka Wall-mart. Back to square one.

  30. Mark Phillips says:

Let’s get the cart and horse in the correct order. Millcon is a sub-contractor to R&O.

  31. tra says:

    D’oh!

  32. Walt says:

So what ARE they hiding? CAN they be blocked?

  33. Anonymous says:

We are getting a new Wall mart before Lost Coast Brewery can do their expansion.. This is all Tyson and his new suck butt Community Development Director Rob Wall-“mart”.
Mr Wall-Mart has been sitting on his thumbs with Barbara’s project since Larry was in office.

  34. High Finance says:

I want to thank all you guys having hysterics over a Wal-Mart coming to town. You have given me a good laugh today !

Bolthio has exposed the rampant classism many of you have toward the poor & middle class.

  35. Random Guy says:

right, hi finance…bolithio knows what “the poor” think. He’s said so. He knows “them” probably as well as you do.

  36. Heraldo says:

HiFi’s stuck-up, classist comments are voluminous on this blog. That he thinks a WalMart will help the poor speaks volumes.

  37. High Finance says:

That you cannot see how WalMart helps the poor speaks volumes about you or are you lying again Heraldo ?

Wal-Mart is the bogeyman of the left because they are not unionized and the owners contribute to conservative candidates and causes. The mere mention of Wal-Mart gets the left hyper ventilating and going into convulsions. Unfortunately for you all this is still a mostly free country and Wal-Mart is coming to Eureka.

You will find that your prediction of the destruction of Eureka will not come to pass and that Wal-Mart will not cause any local businesses to fail.

If you people ever stopped to look back you would all feel rather silly. But you will have moved on to the next end of our world predictions by then.

    Silly you.

  38. Debbi Towns says:

Just got back from the other coast where everyone, i mean those who have, just keep building up and up, as oppose to out becuz there isn’t enough land. I hardly recognized my childhood beach, its just full of mini mansions. i wonder where they will get all the ‘stuff’ they’ll need to fill ‘em up? Walmart of course!! after paying for upgrading their homes, with bailout monies i s’pose since where else is the money coming from? walmart will be all they could afford!

  39. So it is mid September, what is the status of the new MYSTERY store? Are the permits issued? Has work started?
