Remember Hurricane Sandy? Republican Representative Peter King does.

Republican meets Republican warmth and values.  Turns out they eat themselves.

Wow! King understands that it is the federal govt’s job to help out when there is a natural disaster, but where was he when millions of people all over the country were losing their jobs, homes, cars, etc. because of the economic disaster created and sustained by the political/economic policies of his party?

It might be a New year, but it’s the same old “turn everything into a hate the Republicans” rant. Very sad.

  3. A pesky fact
    January 2, 2013 at 8:39 am

It’s a 20 billion relief bill with 40 billion in added pork.

It should be rejected on those grounds.

    PJ,

The community reinvestment act and the repeal of glass-stiegel are both democratic policies, and were the primary driver of the housing bubble and collapse.

  4. A pesky fact
    January 2, 2013 at 8:41 am

    JW,

    It beats applying critical thinking.

Once critical thinking enters into the picture leftism collapses in a cascade. It must be avoided at all costs on those grounds.

Funny thing, after the disaster with Katrina thousands of reporters reported every incident, every example of the federal government lapses. They even blamed Pres Bush for the incompetance of the New Orleans Democratic Mayor & the Louisiana Democratic Governor.

After Sandy, a few days of a few stories mostly with good photo opps of Pres Obama. The incompetance of the federal government gets a pass when Democrats are in control.

Peter King is part of the Republican Party, but first he is a human being and he obviously seeks to care for his fellow man who are truly in need. As a person who rejects both parties and instead choose to stay part of the Human Party, I commend him for staying Human.

  7. January 2, 2013 at 9:52 am

    A pesky fact :
The community reinvestment act and the repeal of glass-stiegel are both democratic policies, and were the primary driver of the housing bubble and collapse.

It is remarkable, although not surprising, how the media gave the Dems a pass on the housing/ mortgage collapse.

  8. January 2, 2013 at 11:08 am

The repeal of Glass-Steagall was bipartisanship at its best. Reagan, Clinton, Phil Gram, Paul Volker, all in bed together on the orders of the banks.
I don’t think the actions of the press following great disasters have anything to do with the parties. It’s very simple really. The government had much mud on its face after Katrina, and the ruling class instructed their media organizations not to make the same mistake next time. And they dutifully complied. Doesn’t matter at all which rich are in office.
This is now being applied to mass killings involving guns. Suddenly, these killings, which are happening every day; never make it out past the local/regional news. Before Connecticut these stories were national headlines, now, they barely make the back page. On the orders of the NRA, I’m sure.
I strongly disagree with the idea that the bill for New York contained billions in “Pork,” if that were true, it would have sailed through without a hitch.
The republican party is breaking up. But that really doesn’t mean a thing for working people, the democrats are just as much against the poor, the needy, and the working-class. There’s only one party, the party of the wealthy. The party of the Aristocracy. I think this Senator is a good place to draw the dividing line between who is truly part of the aristocracy and who is not. He’s just not rich enough ignore the plight of his constituents.
I must say I’m rather surprised by all this. Hurricane Sandy affected a mostly “white” population. And unlike Katrina, the Feds came running. I’m quite surprised that they are not bending over backwards to assist their “base.”

Notice how they hate to use the actual name of the Glass-Steagall repeal? Gramm-Leach-Bliley, all Republicans, authored it, the Senate GOP passed it and only 1 Democrat (Fritz Hollings-SC) voted for it. In the House it had bipartisan support but Republicans could have passed it with a simple majority vote anyway. Clinton signed it.

CRA had nothing to do with the housing/financial crisis. NADA!

Movie Dad…..I’m not quite sure where to start. You think the “ruling class” controls what the media reports? The mainstream media has a liberal bias. They even admit it. Could it be that if something casts a negative light on this administration, it doesn’t get coverage? Then you say that reporting on mass killings, since Connecticut, don’t make it out of the local news. Which new mass murders are you talking about? And you attribute the lack of reporting on these mass murders(?) to orders of the NRA? Are you kidding me? But I give you credit…..you were able to interject class warfare and racism in you post. like a good little liberal.
I’m thinking this is actually Forest Queen posting.

“A pesky fact” apparently prefers not to apply critical thinking to the question of which party actually pushed the repeal of Glass-Steagall.

What a fool believes. The 1% doesn’t own the main stream media? I still wonder why you anonymous cowards don’t identify yourselves? You talk a lot on behalf of the ruling-class, but for some reason you’re too scared to back up your position in real life. Mostly I just skip past your posts, as I’m sure most people do. Whatever, your “anonymous” postings on behalf of the wealthy and their corporations mean nothing, since you refuse to put your name to any of it.
Yeah, yeah; the ruling-elite has no influence on corporate media. Just click your little heels and keep repeating that to yourself.
Local journalist? yeah, yeah; most journalists I know “sign” their writing, and take the heat, or the praise for it. Can’t imagine a real “Journalist” hiding behind anonymity. But that’s the best thing about having no responsibility for your statements, you can claim anything. You can call yourself anything you wish. Since it’s all BS anyway.

If I sign my name, the ¨Ruling Class¨ and the ¨NRA¨ will stop paying me to take ¨orders¨ from them. You can´t hate a journalist for trying to make a buck in this tough economy.
This just in, ¨Obama wants to take all your guns, film at eleven¨.

  18. January 2, 2013 at 4:57 pm

    PJ,

    1) I use the repeal term because it’s easier to keep straight (and because I advocate for GS’s reinstatement)

2). Would you be willing to admit that the CRA had at least some role in the crisis, what with requiring subprime loans to be issued and whatnot?

3). Check my URL for a good article regarding the CRA in the crisis.

    4) notice how you immediately switched to using “they” to describe “the other”? That’s a type of biggotry.

    To all,

1). Movie dad may have been inartful in making his point, but, srsly, is there any disagreement that the primary job of the media is preserving the status-quo of corporate-government incest?

I agree with your phrasing Pesky. In my opinion, much of the 5th Estate has become a lapdog for corporate America (they´re owned by them and most of their ad revenue comes from them), and they certainly aren´t keeping a very critical eye on the government. Sure, some journalist are doing some fine investigative reporting, but as they say: Freedom of Press, as long as you have a gold soapbox to stand on.

MD´s rants about mass killings going unreported and the ¨Ruling Class¨ and the ¨NRA¨ giving ¨orders¨ to journalist is beyond credibility and only serves to make critics of the Press seem like wackos.

CRA did not require subprime loans be issued. CRA, which started in 1977, required banks to give mortgages to people in neighborhoods where they accepted deposits to end redlining discrimination. It did not require banks to lower their standards and CRA had no role in the crisis. The financial “reforms” increased the size of the housing mortgage market as it loosened regulations. The subprime market (not CRA’s) inflated the real estate bubble beyond reason and when it popped all the credit default swaps on risky mortgage bundles essentially bankrupted the insurers. Banks shutting down credit did the rest.

“The mainstream media has a liberal bias.”

The Fox Network is liberal? Better not tell them, they might start taking each other out with assault weapons. Come to think of it, that would be beneficial.

JW can’t accept that reality has a liberal bias. Or that Florida, his state, will be under the sea soon enough. Hope he lives to see it.

Heraldo’s blog, once buzzing with knowledge and wit, has sunk so low. The know-nothings have swarmed it and built a hive of ignorance. Only the stalwart, Plain Jane, still bothers responding to them. Why waste your time, PJ? Make quitting this blog a resolution. Let the know-nothings blather nonsense to themselves. I found your link in your name. How do you do that?

What the report (if not the editorial) actually said was some large banks gave out risky loans to more easily pass their CRA exams, not that they were required to do so. It also notes that the effect was at its strongest when private securitization was booming.

No doubt Fox is Conservative, and it’s also a cable show. Mainstream is more ABC,NBC,CBS. It always surprises me how freightened liberals are of Fox. And when I see the water rising, I’ll move to higher ground. When the “Big One” hits California, how much time will you have to react?
And when BJ is your “stalwart”, it’s probably a sign that you’re headed into the crapper!

NYR…. I think your stalwart, BJ, took your advice. She has been much less hateful in her few posts so far this year. It’s understandable though, given the ass kickin she took in 2012. I don’t blame her though. Given that’s she’s ill equipped in the intellect department, I wouldn’t want to mathch wits with a Conservative either. It’s kinda like taking a BB gun to war.
