$220K bathroom renovation at Secretary of the Interior office

brWith the government “broke,” it seems irresponsible to spend $220K renovating your office’s personal bathroom.  But the Obama administration doesn’t care.  Oh, wait: this was the Bush administration.  It just took a reporter four years to shake the information free.

    Hmm,

This is a private bathroom, not on public display, and not even in a historically important building so the cost of all the fancy fixtures, panels, etc. are unjustified. Even if it was a “public” bathroom in the White House such extravagance obscene.

“Deficits don’t matter.” Dick Cheney, to Paul O’Neill, then Treasury Secretary, after the mid-term elections in 2002, justifying the push for a trillion dollars in tax cuts even though the war in Afghanistan was already pushing the deficit back up.

Of course, Dick had it all figured out — as one of his neocon puppets, Paul Wolfowitz, famously said in March 2003, “There is a lot of money to pay for this [the Iraq war] that doesn’t have to be US taxpayer money, and it starts with the assets of the Iraqi people. We are talking about a country that can really finance its own reconstruction and relatively soon.”

Do you think a $3500 refrigerator is necessary to renovate a bathroom, or that numerous $1500 panels, custom cabinets and a $65 TP holder are sensible? Even with the extravagance of the supplies, its hard to imagine where the remaining 200 hundred thousand or so went. I’m guessing contracting fees to someone connected. I’d like to see an investigation into the contractors’ political donations.

When was the last time ANY local news source filed a FOIA request for anything in this county AND follow-up?

Is the corruption and waste so obvious here that it’s not considered “news”?

The right-wing’s new supervisor-majority thinks nothing of spending $20,000 to rename the airport? Remind me….what are taxpayers spending on Rex Bohn to whine about not liking “Redwoods” in the proposed new title!?

And how much time is required by city/county staff involved with the construction of another major hotel in Eureka? Their downtown is already saturated in low-wages, traffic, and struggling hotels!

Instead of taking the time to conceive and produce a well-deserved award for Betty Chinn, Eureka’s overpaid police chief should be publicly questioning Eureka’s continuing legacy of haphazard developments that will worsen Eureka’s downtown traffic disaster, and the growth of crime, drug abuse, and homelessness that accompany unbridled growth in poverty-wage hotels and big boxes in rural economies.

At least this blog covered a wasteful latrine in D.C.

Not one local media source covered the $250,000 taxpayers spent on the new traffic signals to accommodate Safeway’s Eureka consolidation…a company that made sure their Rite-Aid building in Henderson Center cannot be a grocery, (where one is badly needed), while gifting another empty building to Eureka’s increasing collection.

Next time you hear one your city or county reps parrot their contributor’s BS about “growth” ask them about the “other growth” their policies exasperate.

Look Out Your Window: Safeway cannot be blamed for the “No Grocery Store” in the Henderson Center Rite Aid. That distinction goes to the Food Mart which operated a grocery after the Purity closed. I could never understand why Food Mart put in that clause since they were liquidating both of their stores because that facility was built to sell groceries.

I understood that Safeway bought the building and leased it to Rite-Aid. The contract has a “no grocery” clause.

I understood that was true, in part. Safeway bought the building, outbidding Murphy’s that also bid on it. Safeway included a clause that stipulated no more than 1000 sq. ft. (or something like that) of the building could be used for grocery items.

I frequented Safeway at the time and brought up the Food Mart purchase to one of their assistant managers. This was before I’d heard about the food sales limitation. The assistant manager claimed they just bought a building no one else wanted. She made it sound like they just took advantage of a good buy no one else wanted and never mentioned the food limitation.

Not long after that I spoke with a fairly well known guy around town, who tended to be in the know. He was the one that told me Safeway undercut Murphy’s bid and put the food limitation on the building. I can’t say for sure who was telling the truth, but I suspect my friend in the know was right.

  38. January 16, 2013 at 7:55 pm | #38

Oh. What I meant about who was telling the truth is I can’t say for sure my friend didn’t get some bullshit story from someone he knew, took it as gospel and went off running with it.

Safeway bought the store to eliminate the competition, and all the folks in Henderson Center who used to walk the the grocery store now were forced to drive (if they could) to one of the Safeways (and now there’s one). O’Dell did the same thing with the Union and the Garberville paper to force everyone wanting local news to buy the Beacon. Tried to buy the Enterprise, too, but they wouldn’t sell to him. “Free” enterprise. . .gotta love it!

Interesting that just showing that an agency like the GSA can be equally incompetent under any administration brings out the ugly in people. Calling news sources “urine yellow”, when the story was carried by every news source in the country. And I’m not sure where the statement ” the culprit spent four times what he was permitted” came from. Closest thing I could find to a stated budget said Jeff Neely initially approved expenditures of $300,000, then approved the remaining $532,000. He “reported” to himself……he had no budget to stay within.
And anyone not in agreement with the liberal view is called a nut, idiot, and wanker. It’s actually quite sad.
And by the way……. while some officials in the GSA “Vegas Vacation” were fired, the majority were allowed to resigned. I’m guessing with no loss of benefits.

JW constantly displays his functional illiteracy. I didn’t say the link wasn’t credible. I was merely pointing out that frightwingers always use urine yellow sources. One peak at the front page of that rag makes the case. He “guesses” that fired and resigned GSA employees still get benefits, but doesn’t provide any evidence of that. They were all either fired or allowed to resign, including Neely’s supervisor. Many of those involved were contractors, not federal employees, and there is no reason to believe that people who no longer employed receive benefits, but that doesn’t stop JW from guessing that they do.

My Republican friends absolutely believe Obama is the cause of all ills in America.
