ACLU Redwoods Chapter Names Richard Salzman Patriot of the Year

Congratulations, Richard. Well-deserved!! Among the many ways in which Richard has contributed to American values was his lawsuit against the so-called “progressive” City of Arcata, filed to prevent the city from arresting people for holding signs requesting money. A potluck dinner will take place 4/1/2013, 6 p.m. at the Unitarian Church (24 Fellowship Way, Bayside, CA). Salzman will accept the award in memory of his father who, Salzman writes, was a card-carrying-member of the ACLU since before he was born.

LOL. It’s things like this that keep me at odds with local progressives, despite voting Democrat (sometimes Green) in every election.
The court decision led to my all-time favorite example of what Kevin Hoover thinks is objectivity — a headline reading “Salzman Claims Victory in Panhandling Lawsuit.”
Next in The Eye: “2+2=4, claims mathematician”

Bur seriously, congrats to Richard. That panhandling ordinance was an abomination, trampling on the first amendment rights of some of the most vulnerable members of society, in order to make sure no one else “felt uncomfortable.” Apparently the Arcata City Council members who supported it were hallucinating an imaginary amendment to the Constitution that guaranteed that no one would ever be made “uncomfortable” with the aesthetically displeasing experience of seeing a panhandler in a downtown area.
And before the usual morons start whining about “aggressive panhandlers” blocking people’s paths or pursuing and harrassing them, allow me to point out that Richard’s lawsuit did not challenge the portion of the ordinance that banned that sort of “aggressive panhandling.” That portion or the ordinance is still in effect today.
Also, congrats to Shane Brinotn, the only member of the Arcata City Council to oppose the overreaching and unconstitutional ordinance, and who correctly predicted that it would be struck down by the courts.
Hoover is so benevolent and deferential to the city of Arcata, I was surprised he printed Kash Boodjeh’s letter to the California Department of Finance. But Kash cc’d Kevin and painted him into a public corner. I notice the Arcata story has all but dried up or covered up.

Mitch, I believe that Eye report was based on a press release. It’s normal to use the word “claims” until more information is available, such as an interview with the city. Moreover, it’s Salzman we’re talking about. I’m sure you’ve read the NC Journal article about the man. Of all people on the North Coast, when Salzman makes statements intended to be factual, it’s totally appropriate to use the word “claims.”
