Having been a beneficiary of this man’s kindness, I can say with authority that there is much goodness in his heart.

  2. October 15, 2010 at 9:25 am

Ron is a good person, a very hard worker, and contributes passionately to the community. He will be a wonderful member of the Eureka City Council. Ron, Greg and I will come by tonight. You are a gentleman!

Hear, hear. I couldn’t have said it better. See you there.

Ron is a good person, a very hard worker, and contributes passionately to the community, agreed.

But I will still vote for Mike Newman. Mike is also all of the above.

These are two good people running. One is conservative and one is not.

    October 15, 2010 at 3:32 pm

One big difference is that Ron fully suports the Jefferson School project and Newman does NOT. I gues Mike doesn’t think people and neighborhoods are capable of doing the job. If he doesn’t believe in us, why the heck should we believe in him?

  6. High Finance
    October 15, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Mike is smart enough to recognize a financial albatross.

The city has no money to buy the school, no money to fix the school, no plan on what to do with the school, no tenants lined up, no hard estimates on the cost of repairs. All they have are good intentions.

Yet the city went ahead & obligated all the taxpayers of Eureka to millions of dollars of expenses.

If we ran our personal finances this way we would go bankrupt. This is a HUGE reason to vote against Kuhnel & Glass.

High Finance, what has Mike Newman done that makes him a better candidate for City Council than Ron Kuhnel?

I had a rollicking good time. Ron and his family are such great people. I’ve known Leslie for ages and I got a chance tonight to tell her Mom what a gem her daughter is. “The Lost Dogs” performed some soul-stirring blues, leading me to wonder why I ever got the notion that drums don’t belong in blues bands. This is not a comprehensive review of the party. Just my 2 cents worth of subjective (: and completely accurate :) notes.

High Finance, what has Mike Newman done that makes him a better candidate for City Council than Ron Kuhnel?

Newman has wedged his nose firmly up Arkley’s ass. Kuhnel has not. That makes Newman more attractive to High Finance.

Hi Fi, we are not a loosey goosey group of talkers, we are bringing organizational capacity, leveraging local resources following a needs assessment performed by the city, we are assuming responsibility for our future. We have had the community…the whole community engaged in this process and every time we get stomped we come back stronger with more REAL support. we presented a slew of REAL funding streams, a cashflow positive feasibility study, partners, volunteers, donations, completed grant applications, are you saying Mike Jones, Frank Jager, Jeff Leonard and Virginia are stupid they all support this community revitalization project, for gods sake don’t you watch the council meetings, Virginia thanked us for all the hard work and planning because she knows we are bringing it,do you think she was lying? Or do you just hate to see common folk succeed? The only thing that has slowed us down is Site Control!!! we are dealing with 2 giant bureaucracys that have hoop after hoop, and we are jumping…you just watch how high.

=> Anonymous, your language is appealing in the sense that it is strong and pithy.

=> On the other hand, your language is insulting, making comments of a sexually suggestive nature about a local candidate for office who deserves respect if only for risking the catcalls of his political enemies. How many of us have enough courage to take that type of risk?

=> You could have made your point without the graphic imagery and I hope in the future you will do so.

    oh yes and
“The city has no money to buy the school…redevelopment, this is BLIGHT!

no money to fix the school…non city staff directed to follow through on grant preparation, working directly with the committee to see this project is funded and succeeds..

no plan on what to do with the school, community center park and playground, day care, literacy, afterschool programs, green jobs training, specialized healthcare, food manufacturing incubators, low cost accessible community kitchen, hey does this sound like the counties identified targets of opportunity, hmmmm maybe we do our homework!!

no tenants lined up, wrong again, cash flow positive feasibility study includes and letters from the interested tenets all of which have been interviewed, ability to pay assessed, rents set and economic analysis complete,

no hard estimates on the cost of repairs uh, wrong again hi fi where the hell have you been? this is not going to be cheap but it is going to be the biggest single improvement the westside of eureka has seen in years.

they All have good intentions. You were just a little out of order here

The deal is, all this energy trying to make this group of committed citizens look weak and why. This is a steal of a real estate investment, the value is not going anywhere but up, preserving this property as publicly zoned, keeping in the city’s control and having the people themselves taking responsibility for the future of their community? I just dont get you guys, but you know what, i get Glass and Kuhnel, and they are getting my vote.

Heidi, all you have are a bunch of wishes & hope fors. You have no legal committments from anybody. Everything I have said is true. You don’t even know what is going in the building. You have no architect plans, you have no bids, you have zilch.

Yet now the city taxpayers are committed for millions.

    Good luck.

Thank you Heidi for stating this so very well. I have gone repeatedly on record as saying this Jefferson School will not be easy, but it can and will be done. You should never underestimate the power of motivated and organized neighborhoods. I hope to see this example of positive neighborhoods activism repeated over and over again across our city. I am pledged to make city council and our city staff be supportive of such efforts. This is not a conservative or liberal concept – it is simply how government should work.

Attempts by partisan individuals like Hi Fi to frame an election and judge a candidate’s qualifications on the basis of labels should be rejected. Look as my record. Look at my qualifications. Look at what I pledge to accomplish. Then made a judgment.

This is my blog thread, and the event is over so I want to make a couple closing comments.

At stated above it was great fun and those that came had a wonderful time. The “Lost Dogs” group was indeed fabulous and I have to say if you ever want a band to play at an event you cannot go wrong here.

I also want to thank the volunteers from the Eureka Theater who helped serve food and beverages at the event, my wife Melanie and step-daughter Leslie Lollich for overseeing the first class silent auction, and everyone else who came and participated. It is truly humbling to be surrounded by so many great friends and for me it was a night to remember. Thanks to all.

Jefferson School will cost the taxpayers all over the city millions of dollars. This purchase was made for political reasons & was not thought out or planned responsibly. I question the judgement of the politicians who made or approved of this purchase.

Oh, really? Well, HiFi, I question the judgment of a commenter who attacks the judgment of local elected leaders while misspelling the word “judgment.” What do you think about that? At the very least, it shows a sloppiness in your use of language that hints at a possible sloppiness in your thinking overall.

It was a great party for a strong candidate!
This thread points out one clear difference between Ron and his opponent. Ron solidly supports the citizens of Eureka and their efforts on behalf of transforming the Jefferson School site. Newman “has reservations” and doesn’t think the citizens are capable of doing such a complicated job. Which one do you think is on your side? Which one is an elitist and which one really believes in the people and their abilities? Vote for Ron Kuhnel. There’s simply no question about it!

  23. High Finance
    October 19, 2010 at 10:17 am

Baloney Mouse. Both support the neighborhood. The difference is Kuhnel does it without thinking about any consequences to the other 99% of Eureka. Newman wants to do what is best for all of Eureka.

If you ran your own finances like Glass & Kuhnel run the city’s, you would have been bankrupt years ago.

Khamsi, what do I think of your post? I think you cannot debate on merit & so must pick out typos. Try again when you grow up.

You mean like voting for unneeded and unaffordable police cars to be purchased from a major campaign donor, HiFi?

What “major campaign donor” Plain Jane?

Do you have facts or are you making shit up again? Name names & tell us who they contributed to?

Do you think that buying Dodge Charger chase cars that can go 160 MPH makes sense on the city streets?

  26. Anonymous

Agreed HiFi..160 mph Police Cars makes about as much sense as assault rifles for the DAs office! Vote all these bums out of office!!

Well darn it anyway! My invitation must have been lost in the mail.

But Virginia’s fundraiser at the Women’s Club Monday night was much more fun! And her food was much better!
