Bass lies about T-S endorsement

The Times-Standard endorsed Bonnie Neely for Supervisor after noting the obvious flaw in challenger Virginia Bass: a failure to educate herself on key issues.

But you wouldn’t know it from looking at her website or the flyer circulated out Sunday where Bass claims she has the T-S endorsement.  And so continues the Bass campaign to mislead voters.  Here’s what the T-S actually said:

We’re not convinced that Bass has hit the books hard enough in the months since the primary to gain our support. Bass still seems under-studied, and even unwilling to take a stand on something as critical as which option of the general plan update she supports and why.

Bass admits her failure to do her homework, which Neely notes in recent advertising.

    From Virginia’s website
    Virginia’s partial endorsement list:

    Times-Standard
    Humboldt County Sheriff’s Organization
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 551

Perhaps this is another issue she has not done her homework on. Is she thinking it is too late in the game to be called on such a blatant lie?

keep dreaming. Bass by 25%. Neely’s lurch to the left may play well in Arcata, but not in the conservative 4th dist. Dumbest political move ever.

Bass was not endorsed by TS. It is an out right lie. She has not educated herself regarding the problems of our county or state. If she is uneducated & lying now, what is it going to be like if she wins the election???
Either you are qualified to do the job or you’re not & she’s not. Caught in a big one this time Bass!

I’m tired of the half truths, out & out lies, back room deals, & the down right stupid people running our city into the ground. Bass is a liar ( TS did not endorse you), Brady is a one trick pony( every problem we have will be solved with the Marina Center), Newman is as stupid as Bass (did not know what the P.O.P. team was)! Vote Tomorrow, your voice is needed!

The way for Eureka to lose power on the board is to elect Bass, who knows nothing and will be of no use to the community on the board. Oh, is that too harsh?

What a sleazy attempt at fooling the voters! Matthew Owen should be embarassed for the way he has attempted to wrangle these elections-not only will he lose this election for his candidates, but he has tarnished all of their reputations in the process. His first mailer-Democrats support Bass, Brady, Newman-and now this blatant lie that Bass is endorsed by the TS. Guess what-the Democrats didn’t endorse these candidates, and neither did the Times-Standard! Shame on you Matthew Owen!

Yes, that is it! Yes! A mistake. That’s all. It’s just them not knowing they did not have the endorsement of the Times-Standard.
Just because it could be so easily caught as a ‘mistake’ makes it ok. It’s not like they were trying to squeeze every last vote from that room temperature IQ bunch you mentioned.

How could that be a mistake? Did they just assume T-S would endorse her and send the fliers out before they knew for sure? Did the T-S tell her they were endorsing her and then endorsed Neely? Did they misinterpret the Neely endorsement as a Bass endorsement? At the least it demonstrates incompetence on the part of her staff and raises questions about her judgment. What it appears to be is a case of lying to people who don’t read the editorials but might read a campaign flier. They probably still don’t know that the T-S endorsed Neely and why.

Bass has sent out THREE mailers, at least, listing the TS endorsement. She plans to have one in TOMORROW’S TS. When Brady listed a similar ‘mistaken’ endorsement, it was fronnt page news. Now the TS plans to squash the story, no plans to put in print.
We should all call Mr. Dave Kuta, Publisher of the TS, and ask him to run the story (I did). It protects his paper’s good name and exposes an obvious attempt to mislead voters. That sounds like a story to me. His phone number is 441-0584.
You can leave a message. Tell him just how worthless any Times Standard endorsement becomes if he won’t print this story.
Just like Bass’ mailers trying to look like she’s endorsed by the Dem Central Committee when she’s NOT. It’s another lie and another attempt to mislead the voters. We must demand better from our elected representatives. Call Mr. Kuta now. 441-0584

  22. A-Nony-Mouse
    November 1, 2010 at 4:48 pm

I must correct my last post. It was Allison Jackson who claimed incorrect endorsements, not Brady. Too many names and too many issues! The TS jumped all over Jackson with a front page story. Now they’re planning to simply ‘not mention’ the same misleading behavior from the Bass camp. Check the last mailer you got to see if it’s true. It’s true!!!
Now call and complain. It’s the only way to hold candidates and the newspaper accountable.
    Dave Kuta 441-0584 CALL!!

So for those keeping score, it’s Allison Jackson with TWO fake endorsements, and Virginia Bass in second place with ONE fake endorsement. All the other candidates are in a distant third place, with ZERO.

And just like the Jackson fake endorsements, Bass’s fake T-S endorsement was either a case of intentionally misleading the public, or a case of misleading the public due to incompetence. Either way, the public ends up being mislead.

There should be a way to prosecute this kind of abuse. Do you think the T-S is up for a lawsuit to protect their brand??

  31. November 1, 2010 at 7:28 pm

I look forward to seeing how the T-S handles it. When Allison Jackson was caught lying about an endorsement, the T-S covered it. One would think they would have something to say about being falsely used by the Bass campaign. If they don’t and she wins, it would cast a shadow over the paper’s future coverage of her.

    ‘Twas the night before elections
    And all through the town
    Tempers were flaring
    Emotions all up and down!
    I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap
    Had cut off the TV
    Tired of political crap.
    When all of a sudden
    There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window
    Saw Obama and his boys.
They had come for my wallet
    They wanted my pay
    To give to the others
Who had not worked a day!
    He snatched up my money
    And quick as a wink
    Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink.
    He then rallied his henchmen
    Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out
    To tear my country apart!
    ‘On Fannie, on Freddie,
    On Biden and Ayers!
    On Acorn, On Pelosi’
    He screamed at the pairs!
They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation
Who wouldn’t stand up and fight!
So I leave you to think
    On this one final note-
    IF YOU DONT WANT SOCIALISM
    GET OUT AND VOTE!

Bonnie is no smarter than Virginia. Bonnie pretends to be and she gets away with it because she has done the same job for TWENTY FOUR YEARS.

Virginia will pick up the job very fast. Bonnie knew no more than Virgina when Bonnie began as a clerk in the Supervisor’s office. The biggest difference between the two is that Bonnie has forgotten who she is supposed to represent. It is not the Dem party bigwigs or the homeless advocates or the non profit administrators. Virgina understands it is the people who live in the fourth district.

HiFi, I did not ask your opinion of Neely’s smarts. I asked why you think Virginia has any. What’s your evidence that she is capable of “picking it up very fast?” because she was a waitress. No. Because she was mayor? Again, no smarts shown there. All I can see so far is that she didn’t think it was important enough to familiarize herself with issues she would be asked about (other than the Marina Center) apparently because she wasn’t smart enough to see that it mattered.

  64. anonymous
    November 2, 2010 at 9:39 am

Also, HiFino argument from me that an incumbent knows the nuts and bolts better than the newcomer. That’s not my point. Virginia should have given evidence by now that she will hit the ground running. But my opinion is that all she has done is show that she is behind the 8-ball because she hasn’t done any homework yet. Kinda like writing that term paper AFTER it’s due.

  68. November 2, 2010 at 10:30 am

Virginia’s failure to understand that she did not receive the T-S endorsement supports the arguments that she is 1) unable to understand even the most simple issues, and 2) that her campaign has no qualms about misleading voters.

After having read Virginia’s “reasoning” about the Times-Standard “endorsement” process, I can only say that her excuse is disingenuous at best and an outright lie at worst! To think that the May T-S comment was an endorsement of her is wrong. I, and many others I am sure, did not think the T-S comment was an endorsement of either candidate at that point of the campaign. She has used the T-S as an endorsement on her campaign literature since then. Now, she claims that the T-S “communication on the editorial process was not clear.” Baloney! Anyone in politics or following politics KNOWS that endorsements happen for each election! Bass is either clueless or wants the voters to think we are we are stupid. I noticed that the T-S currently has the Bass/Neely split endorsement from last June on their homepage

    Possibly adding to the confusion?

Who would interpret an old NON endorsement of either candidate an endorsement? If Bass is this easily confused, she will be a disaster on the BOS.

How the Bass camp could possibly interpret that as an endorsement deserving top billing on her website and circulars is incomprehensible. I doubt it was an accident.

And notice HiFi hasn’t rushed to defend his assessment of her intelligence with any evidence

Apparently most people agreed with me & said pppffffttt to you anon.

Even after Bonnie spent $160,000 dollars on advertising.

Even after Mathew Owen/VB got the rich developer crowd to throw hundreds of thousands of $ at supporting Bass/Brady/Newman/Cleary, they still could barely win. All that propaganda…good thing Arkely doesn’t mind throwing money at his problems.

Oh right, the Marina Center isn’t a problem and he spent over $250,000 to paper over how it does nothing to move this project forward out of the goodness of his heart. He just supported (and urged his Gang of 30 rich developer friends) to the tune of WELL over a quarter of a million dollars, to put their pretty but frighteningly STUPID puppes]ts in place.

Record everything they say and do. Starting with tonight’s lies (Jager and Brady), followed by the tape of the drunken idiot who just beat the sober and informed candidate.

No, hifi, most people are too damn busy watching their middle-class lives slip away due to R policies of the 2000-2008 years to volunteer.

Benefit to the Rich: they can afford to pay people to obfuscate the truth.

You, HF, are probably both stupid and benefiting beyond reason by other people’s mistakes, mistakes of the banks (how will you fix those mistakes???), and not care when our country continues further down the ditch/gully Bush and his ilk drove us into? You must be single and unloved, for there is no other reason for you to be so hostile, depressed, and useless.

Response: the above poster’s quote is stuck on stupid with regard to this section….”Bush and his ilk drove us into”….

Stuck on stupid won’t admit non-Bush presidents, congress, etc…. drove the country into the ditch S WELL TOO!

This election cycle as I predicted and seered would be an election of hypocrisy – it has been confirmed.

Victory through deception; the Republican trick is played out again. These right-wingers are just total asshole scumbags. They suck.

Auntie Arkley, we should set you up on a date with Chumbolley.

You two sound like kindred spirits.

    A Republican lying? Never!

Virginia Bass doesn’t even admit she’s a Republican anymore. If Rob Arkley’s beloved Republican Party is so popular, then why did Virginia Bass lie about her politicial party affiliation?

Everyone knows Virginia is still a Republican at heart, even if she changed her registration as an election ploy.

I like being independent. Both parties when at their extreme, are complete crazies. Virginia changed her affiliation as it represented her ideals more than her previous affiliation.
