Jager to recommend Melinda Ciarabellini for city council seat

Frank Jager will recommend retired Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Captain Melinda Ciarabellini to fill the City Council seat he vacated to become Mayor after the November elections, according to the Times-Standard.

The Council will vote on the matter at its January 4th meeting.

The HCSO website hasn’t updated its site since her reported retirement and lists her position as current.  Read her bio here.

Another public employee connection for appointment in Eureka ….. the appointment process is just manipulation and deceit over social politics, that’s all. Government needs to be refreshed with people having nothing to do with connections to political insiders and the advantaged. Yet, we all know why it ain’t in this country – lazy voters who go the easy route, time and time again.

This country is soooooooooo deserving of what is happening to it.

Hey Monitor, instead of hurling insults why don’t you try to understand our situation. Rob and his peeps bought our seats for us. That makes us answerable to them. When you look at it from our perspective, this business about being open to all views just isn’t very practical if we want to keep our seats.

The Jager-Endert ’08 campaign team complained loudly that their opponents were making the city council a “partisan race”, a theme resounding through the halls of the Church, Chamber, Ingomar and Rotary.

Then, once elected, Jager selects a group of partisans, including Endert, to select a partisan to replace him!

How can anyone respect hypocrites claiming they represent “all of Eureka”, but haven’t a shred of fairness to share power with “all of Eureka” by either holding a special election, or appointing the candidate who had won the second highest votes for that office?

No wonder this city is so bitterly divided.

To the hypocrites and liars go the spoils.

I have no idea who Ms. Ciarabellinia is. I don’t know where stands on the issues nor her vision for Eureka. I am concerned about the law enforcement connections of her and our Mayor.

What I do know is that I would have liked to have had a voice in who is going to represent me here in the Forth Ward. Why wasn’t this put to the people? Maybe if I had $30,000 to spare…

I first met Melinda about 12 years ago & was impressed, she will do good.

And Decline to State, the city did have a voice. Frank was elected to the Fourth Ward seat by an overwhelming margin & he chose his successor. Ciarabellinia will have to stand for election at the next regular election cycle in two years.

Frank was elected to the Fourth Ward seat by an overwhelming margin…

In the mayor’s race, Jager got less than 52 percent of the vote. LaVallee got nearly 44 percent. Spalding got almost 5 percent. Barely achieving 50 percent, I don’t see that as a mandate for Jager as mayor.

Knowing of both Mr. Bohn and Ms. Ciarabellini’s professional and civic contributions to our fair city over decades, it is indeed a difficult choice. Both Rex and Melinda are very fine, hard working, intelligent individuals. Yours truly has the highest opinion of each.

Mayor Jager quoted: ”We just felt that Melinda’s experience in government and her calm, even disposition made her a good fit for the council.”

    True. Welcome aboard, Melinda Ciarabellini.

A brief and somewhat outdated biography is here for the informed reader. It unfortunately fails to mention Ms. Ciarabellini’s team involvement overseeing the expansive new Humboldt jail construction (1998?); Field Representative for California’s Correctional Standards Authority; spokeswoman for the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services; Southwest Rotary member; and other associations. Ms. Ciarabellini has an outstanding professional track record and service career.

I’m sure they wrestled with whether or not it would be better for Rex to run for the 1st District Sup seat as a sitting city council member, or if it would be better to sit someone who would stay on and run for re-election to the council in two years.

  32. 69er
    December 29, 2010 at 11:07 am

That is the most rediculous thing you could imagine, Rex would not stand a chance running for first district supervisor. Rex’s heart is in the right place but he does not have the knowledge nor the intelect to run against Jimmy SmithI might consider voting for him if Jimmy doesn’t run next time.

I’ve known Melinda for many years. She is smart, capable, and driven. But she also tends to be a petty, mean-spirited bully. She was condescending as a Captain, often taking advantage the “protection” afforded a person of that rank. I imagine she’ll have to adjust to a new work environment where it’s not a good idea to ridicule those who have deferring opinions. I think she can change. I hope she can change.

As a supporter of the progressives I was hoping they would pick Mr. Bohn because I believe he would have been the easier candidate for the progressives to defeat in 2012. I believe the conservatives huddled, came to the same conclusion and decided to go with Ms. Ciarabellini.

    December 29, 2010 at 1:02 pm

Mayor Jager quoted: ”We just felt that Melinda’s experience in government and her calm, even disposition made her a good fit for the council.”

Back on Earth, a “good fit” still means representation that reflects the political factions of a community.

It’s this world’s tyrannies that prefer homogeneity.

Hence, their theme; “stay calm and positive, keep an even disposition, keep it happy, be a winner”! Bass recently glowed over Newman: “he won’t get ramped-up on issues”.

This is the language that frames dissenting opinions as “radical” and “negative”. A monumental achievement in double-speak that discredits facts with emotion, exploited by dictators for centuries.

This is how a tiny minority that dominates campaign contributions can continue to paint big boxes and sprawl as “positive” when, in reality, they are economically unsustainable and will worsen our decayed infrastructure, record traffic and fatalities, and local incomes that are already half the state-average.
To blindly continue this agenda is truly radical and negative!

As long as the facts of a failed growth model, (and the machinations of those behind it), remain too damn negative to report, to follow-up on, and to become outraged over, the more the advocates of this failure will succeed.

Soon after Joel’s editorial cartoon appeared, the president of the Harley-Davidson company urged hog owners everywhere to stop inflicting their infernal racket on all the other peoples of the world.
