Computer hard, me like sticks

Some Humboldt County officials still live in 1970 when it comes to technology.

“I’d like to notify the public that I’m not an email person,” Eureka Mayor Frank Jager said at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. “I’d prefer not to use email.”

Jager said he has a computer in his office but only “turned it on one time since becoming mayor” last month.

Humboldt County Planning Commissioner Dennis Mayo made a similar proclamation at Thursday’s meeting.

“I never go online cause I can’t make the damn thing work,” Mayo said.

One of these guys is totally lying.

Slow news, one person lying (Mayo, I suspect)…whatever! That is just sad. Whoever is not with the program (i.e. willingness and ability to email) should not hold public office in these times, imo. Even more pathetic is the fact that they seem proud to take that stand.

The Brady Bunch is trying to morph Eureka back into the days of prosperity. There were no e-mails in 1960. When people wanted to communicate officially, they used the Post Office. Those days were much different. Everyone who wanted a job could have one – of course, you had to be a large, white male, and the job was usually some life-threatening shift work in a mill or out in the woods. But there was no e-mail and no god-damned blogs!

Anyway, if you want a written response from Mayor Jager, write him via US Mail: 531 K St, Eureka CA 95501. Be sure to keep a copy of your letter. If he fails to answer you can bring your copy to a council meeting and ask if he got the letter. Then you can read it aloud during your three minutes. After a few of these events the mayor may change his mind about e-mail. Or he may decide your three minutes are over.

    Eureka!

Imagine how well it would go over if the Mayor of a small city were to announce that he didn’t like that confusing telephonic thing where you were just supposed to talk into space, and indicated people should send letters if they expected him to respond.

Response: That is a VERY ACCURATE STATEMENT. So many local community citizens have way too much faith and trust, way too much. Autocracy and oligarchialisms are not good, especially when many local officials are the one’s to embrace such sub-standard, politically platformed service.

Fortunately for the tech-less mayor, he lives in a city where he did not have to appeal to younger voters.

Not doing the “E-mail thing” would have been very detrimental in a city where the younger people are more involved.

To Pounder Z: When the image of a monkey or ape is used to refer to a person of African descent, that is racism. There is a long history of this type of image being used specifically to denigrate those who are African or of African heritage. However, no such history of degradation is linked with the use of monkeys in regards to Caucasians. In this case, yes, he is mocking the ignorance of 2 specific people – not an entire ethnicity. There’s no foul here, other than the obvious put down.

I did not vote for Frank Jaeger and don’t support his policies, but say more power to him in using the telephone and writing letters the old fashioned way. He will be ready when all this technology fails us, because of our environmental excesses. He will also have less stress in his life. He can also avoid e mail spelling such as u for you and bad e mail grammar. Power to the pen and the paper!

Haven’t heard the rumor re Mayo but Sundberg can choose his own planning commissioner appointment just as Jill Duffy chose Mayo when her planning commissioner moved out of state. Each Supervisor has their own choice from a person that lives in their district and the Board of Supervisors does not vote on that choice. Bass will also have her choice of planning commissioner.

There are also at large appointments that maybe there will now be two openings depending on the “resignations” or not that the entire Board of Supervisors can choose between persons that apply for those positions and that is a majority of the Board vote as I understand it.

anon2, “The city needs him badly”. Badly is the operative word. He is “badly” for the city, and not very goodly either. He “may” have been an OK manager at one time but he really fell off the rails with this $200,000 law suit. It pointed out his real lack of managerial skills in dealing with personal and his over controlling style. Sorry Dave, but you blew it big time and you need to step down and do the right thing. There is plenty of institutional knowledge with out you at city hall. You also showed a lack of respect for the Chief and his professionalism. However the good old boys are now entrenched no matter what their transgressions, so the city will muddle along and we pay the price. I have seldom seen a city squander it’s potential as Eureka has.
