Crescent City Wal-Mart goes 24-hours

Look out, Humboldt.  Our neighbor to the North is on the verge of becoming an economic superpower when it’s Wal-Mart moves to a 24-hour format.

Clearly, Del Norte County’s financial woes are over. Big box stores are known by many Humboldt County and city officials to be the ultimate fountain of prosperity.

The new 24-7 consumer opportunity will prepare shoppers for the Super Wal-Mart, scheduled for construction this year.  All hail.

    Simple….Don’t shop there.

Oh crap. Lucky for us CVS and Safeway in Arcata and Winco in Eureka are 24/7 – damn chain stores. If that happened, all the local grocery stores would go out of business.

I sure wish I had a low paying job that would not even begin to cover my childcare expenses or provide health care or pay rent. Working their preferred part time positions I would probably qualify for food stamps and have lots of time to watch Fox news. I would fear immigrants draining our society of its charm while I cheered bonuses and bail outs for big banks. I might even move to Crescent City and not wait for ‘jobs’ to come here. Jobs! Will local government help me with food and rent and health care? I would qualify. Jobs!

“Simple…Don’t shop there.” Excellent strategy. For years, American jobs and most of our retail dollars have been heading over-seas. But I “don’t shop there” yet somehow it’s not that simple (duh), the jobs and the cash increasingly flow across the ocean.

I can’t imagine what sort of persons frequent Wal-Mart in the dead of the night. I’m sure it’s scary. I feel for the employees.

Would probably make for a whole new series of Walmart People, Decline. Walmart Speed Freaks. Although, to do them justice it would probably have to be video rather than still pics.

All they need now is a Trader Joes.
If you depart Arcata around 6pm, you can hit WM and HD and still make it back before Jay Leno. Oops, I mean Fox News.

When most of the other retail opportunities in Crescent City have folded, WalMart has a ‘duty’ to be open all hours. How else can it suck up the last crumbs from Del Norte’s economy? There has to be a place to spend all those big food stamp dollars somewhere.

Did you see this Heraldo? Research shows that when WalMart opens a store, obesity rates shoot up in the local community.

  10. January 25, 2011 at 2:21 pm

    Somehow this is no surprise.

Destroy the American economy, shop Wal*Mart. Don’t like it? Don’t live here.

It is an addiction. It is good to know you can get a twinky and a box of 38s at 3a.m. This is important stuff.

Here in Sacramento you can hit MalWart, Home Despot & Trader Joes all in about an hour if you time it right. You could probably hit four or five MalWarts within an hour if you were so inclined. Tonight I checked out the new MalWart Supercenter in West Sac next to Ikea. It takes up a full city block and has so many entrances it’s confusing to figure out which one to go into.

Unlike most of my progressive friends in Humboldt, I don’t really object to MalWart or Home Despot, I don’t really shopping in them. And I do think it’s a mistake to put a big box on the Balloon Track.

Wait a minute DA Paul Hagen will stop that new Wal-Mart from being built. Oh wait a minute he lost the DA’s race, and he messed up the lawsuit from stopping Wal-Mart. Darn. Thank you Paul Hagen. You would have been a great DA. Not.

The New America, as envisioned by the “Profit=value” folks, looks pretty bleak and cold.

    January 25, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Apparantly, even the economy has affected WalMart’s profit margins.

Apparantly, extra costs to run the store 24/7 are justifiable given more people spend money during those additional hours.

One thing is for sure – not good for the power grid problem to use more energy created by fossil fuels – ah, see how money woes makes the big companies fester over lack of profits, even if it means less efficiency cuz the FY accounting figures need to be at certain levels to kick in credits,, exemptions, line item swaps or separations into independent divisions of the company to allow other tax loopholes to kick in where the high priced legal tax attorneys take losses and ineeficiencies and turn them into profit, etc…..

    *******OBAMA SPEECH*******

Kinda funny how he gets all into technology and innovation and how it used to take 1000 workers to do what now only takes 100 workers cuz of machines……and then he goes on to talk about people, problems and how they need jobs…….yet, which enamored souls would ever realise that an increasing population due to baby boomings, immigrants, etc… could ever compete with machines and the 900% reduction by example from he, the enlightened one, in human (jobs????) employment opportunities. Then, he goes on to say $10K over 4 years for a tax subsidy to college students who are not guaranteed a job, let alone 50% of which or more won’t even work in the field they studied in or attained a degree in, just sayin…..

He did score points when saying adults (parents) need to champion the science project winner as compared to the SuperBowl winner……and points for praising teachers and how they are under-represented and mistreated or something like that…..get off the television and get educsted…..

Reality: No one is going to fix the jobs problem until the population declines – Obama’s speech proves as such in the conflicting statements that have to do with the state of the economy……..

You don’t have to go to Crescent City/Walmart to find greedy corporations who take advantage of their employees. We have plenty of those right here in Eureka. I should know, I work for one.

  22. January 26, 2011 at 7:55 am

Now Crescent City can enjoy southern culture 24 hours a day.

We had them. They were undone by Clinton in coalition with Republicans back in the 1990s to give China most favored nation status just have a decade after they massacred 10 thousand students.
