No trespassing at Jefferson School

Eureka’s west side residents report that Jefferson School and grounds are now covered with no trespassing signs following the City Council’s decision to pull out of escrow.

Volunteers with the Westside Community Improvement Association have been care-taking the property for more than a year, including picking up garbage, mowing lawns, and chasing off ne’er-do-wells to keep the neighborhood clean and safe.  Now it appears insult is being heaped upon injury by forcing an unkempt, blighted property to deteriorate before their eyes.

Many supporters of the purchase spoke of Jefferson as being the “heart” of the west side at Tuesday’s Council meeting.  It appears the Eureka City School district is acting out of spite.  Perhaps this is why parents in Eureka take their kids out side the city or to charter schools for their education.

    Bullshit from Heraldo again.

It is the freaking insurance companies that do things like this. If any well meaning person got hurt they would sue Eureka schools.

    Liability issue?

What if anything is stopping the westside group from raising some money and buying the property themselves. It would only take a few hundred thousand as a down payment That would be true community activism. It is unrealistic to rely on government all the time anyway. I’m in for $500 cash and a pile of auction/raffle items towards the actual purchase. How much are you in for Heraldo?

It does seem possible that some legal eagle at Eureka City Schools got nervous about the liability issues that might arise if one of the volunteers was injured while working on the property.

Keep in mind that “No Trespassing” only means you can’t be on the property without permission. So, at least in theory, the neighbors could ask for permission from the school district, and permission might be granted if the volunteers are willing to sign a waiver of liability.

Yes, it would be a pain in the neck to have to jump through those hoops just to volunteer to pick up trash or mow the lawn, but that’s the litigious world we live in. Frankly I’m surprised that the liability issue hasn’t been raised sooner (assuming it hasn’t).

It will take 600000, this project will not bear another 600 in debt up front, however, we may be able to reduce construction costs considerably by not using redevelopment funds (prevailing wage).

    I am in for $100

    Send your
    phone number,
    donation amount,
    email address and
comment including expiration date of offer to

I will keep everyones name confidential until such a time that we decide this will or will not work then I will email you instructions. It is worth a shot I guess.

Did anybody watch Parks and Recreation tonight? It reminded me of our local civic meetings, blogs, etc. One line in particular resonated (quote won’t be exact) – made in response to a number of public comments – “they may be weirdos but they’re weirdos who care.” Btw, I include myself in that group. We should feel lucky we can voice our opinions as to what we care about – especially given what we see going on in Cairo, etc.

We raised $1800 while I slept, we had $110,000 to begin with, clearly not everyone who reads Heraldo Posts. Amazing! Wow, Thank you. I want to emphasize the snowballs chance in hell here and also that donations will not be used for anything but the purchase of the school.

Thank you guys for showing your support
$111,800 and counting, where’s Rex when you need him! How bout it old man, can you type an auction? :)

A community yard sale might raise a lot of money, Heidi. There are also pancake breakfasts, raffle tickets and auctions of donated items. You’ve got a lot of dedicated people and they are the best resource for any fund raising effort. You could even use the donated funds as seed money to purchase items to be raffled as well as solicit donations from local businesses.

PJ Agreed, we had lists of fundraisers planned for once we secured the property. Blockparty included, some of my old students (yes I even cooked a Jefferson in the early 90’s)run a music production company and wanted to have a benefit concert, that new hip hop freestyle crap the kids love, but hell the kids love it. Anyway Jane, the problem is, it is a longshot, when people give money they do so with the expectation it is for THAT project. Pledges, real honest pledges, at least in my opinion are more secure for the donor. This is a small community, you do not misused your benefactors. You stay true to your word and do what you say. The 100,000 donor asked me where he should deposit the check, I said no where, keep it til we need it, we want to make sure the project goes forward first, chickens, hatch, raccoons, egg sucking dogs, you know what I mean Jane.

We can not be faulted for trying, we may look a little stupid, I fully realize that, Jane, but we have to understand our limits and where “trying” may cause collateral damage. So for now, pledged donations, just to feel what the capacity of the community is safer for all involved. Now we hit 500K we’re pulling out all the stops! But for now, this is OK.

“We can not be faulted for trying, we may look a little stupid, I fully realize that”

David looked ridiculous taking on Goliath, and the “little brown man in a loincloth” looked silly taking on the Empire.

And lots of people who didn’t reach their stated goals may also have looked foolish, but they all advanced social justice simply by getting off their butts.

    Good luck. Show the bastards.

An Insult! Mitch, how dare you compare the clowns to those fine upstanding men of Delta Delta Delta

Bluto: (owls hero)”What? Over? Did you say “over”? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!,And it ain’t over now. ‘Cause when the goin’ gets tough…The tough get goin’! Who’s with me? Let’s go![Bluto runs out, alone; then returns] What the fuck happened to the Delta I used to know? Where’s the spirit? Where’s the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you’re gonna let it be the worst. “Ooh, we’re afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble.” Well just kiss my ass from now on!

Otter: “Bluto’s right. Psychotic… but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons, but that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part!”

Bluto: “We’re just the guys to do it.”

    Owl: over and out!

And now a new musical comedy featuring those beloved dancing stars of stage and screen, NoNoNewman and Brainless Brady. With a special guest appearance by Rob’s favorite boy, Lance “the perfect synchophant” Madsen. And a strong supporting cast, Melinda and Frank, that dynamic duo of song. Let’s all turn out to the Arkley Center to watch ’em sing and dance. It’s the hit of the decade. Kool Aid will be served.

A-Nony-Mouse. Do you realize how childish your post sounds?

About your fundraising, $600k won’t cut it. You need $3 million and probably a lot more. This phantom bd of directors better consult an attorney about their legal liability in collecting any money. People are going way out on a limb here and could be getting into trouble.

Hate to be a nitpicker owltotem, but it wasn’t Delta Delta Delta, which is a national college women’s sorority, but it was the fictitious Delta Tau Chi that was featured in Animal House, AKA “Delta House”.
