Driscoll to leave the Times-Standard

The Eureka Times-Standard is losing a veteran reporter.  The paper just announced on Twitter that John Driscoll is leaving to go work for Congressman Mike Thompson.

Good luck, John.  Or should we just say, congratulations! “You got out of that world, dude!”

Driscoll will replace Liz Murguia as Eureka’s field representative.  Murguia is retiring.

He will be difficult to replace. The T-S is indeed losing an institution. Good luck John!

John developed into a pretty good reporter while at the TS.

Hey John, see if you can peel Thompson off the wine industry and get him to support more water for the Eel River. HA! FAT CHANCE. Let’s see…Money flowing to his campaign OR water flowing in the Eel…

Heraldo, BIG improvement on the design.

Wow, reading the Twitter exchanges between the Times-Standard, Ryan Burns, Jen Savage, etc. etc. etc. was fascinating. What a vapid, self-absorbed bunch. Abate should get in on the action. Hybrid journalism here we come! Amirite?

John, as a subscriber to the T-S I’m really going to miss your excellent natural resources reporting and your amusing column. And having been interviewed by a number of journalists over the years, I would say that you get it right more frequently than most.

I think you picked a good one with Thompson. Keep up the good work.

First, Thomson is far from a liberal, but if you watch Fox news anyone left of Glen beck is Lennon.
Second, I wonder if the T-S is hiring?

I think he’s pretty moderate. My right wing father thinks he’s too liberal, and my left wing friends either like him or think he’s too right wing. I like him, and consider him to be a moderate. Isn’t that what everyone should be? Listening to both sides? They both have their attributes and faults.

Examples of where Thompson “listens to both sides”?

He votes the Democrat party line. His rating by the ACU is only 10%

I agree with Anon 8:30. He fills the much needed moderate niche, IMO. He does seem to like the wine industry though! Just saying,..

Mike Thompson is the only politician in my 40-something years of voting that I’ve agreed with his voting record and his causes almost 100% of the time. John has made a great choice.

HiFi, I see your point of confusion. The person said Thompson listens to both sides, not all sides. Opinions fall on a spectrum. ACU is at the far right edge. Thompson listens to moderates on both sides, not the whackos on the fringe of either side.

I would rather work for Mike Thompson than Bank of America.

I think that John did a good job given his circumstances working for a company that was hollowed out to the extent that it had to be propped up and owned by a bank. Do we really want to get our news from the bank? Would you go to a news paper for a loan? Banks aren’t going to tell us through their newspapers that they are screwing the American middle class.

No 9.41am, Thompson PRETENDS to listen to both sides. Then he votes the way Pelosi tells him to, 96% of the time.

Surely you won’t claim that Pelosi is a moderate ?

  26. February 19, 2011 at 8:24 am

No one will claim you are a moderate, HiFi.

  27. Plain Jane
    February 19, 2011 at 8:44 am

Moderate relative to what? Thompson is to the left of Bachmann, to the right of Kucinich. Most politicians are “moderate” relative to their constituents or they wouldn’t get elected. HiFi’s misconceptions about Thompson are undoubtedly due to his delusions that the majority shares his views and any politician who isn’t doing what HE wants “isn’t listening.”

Mike Thompson is a lying, back-stabbing and manipulative b-s’er – anyone locally that attended the Health Care forum “get together” @ Redwood Acres Fairgrounds a couple years back should know already that Thompson is a GOON; and, if those attendees are still brain dead, then they get what they deserve. So many respectful folks are losing sympathy for stupid, disrespectful people who won’t think for themselves for which causes problems for the rest of society.

Thompson runs a traveling circus he calls an Electronic Town Hall Meeting. He loudly proclaims he wants to hear the voices of All North Coast Residents. Then he puts them on Electronic Hold, and never bothers to answer their questions. If this is Representative Democracy, brothers and sisters, we are in Big Trouble.

HSU used to have the only Veterans Upward Bound program at a public university in California. Thompson let it get shut down by the Bushies. If we grew grapes here, instead of pot and if the program had been for vintners instead of vets, that program would still be running; Thompson would have put some political capital on the line.

Thompson’s a blue dog. I’d say Driscoll would fit in well but now he’s going to have to write the press releases instead of copy them. How’s he gonna manage?

Driscoll is and always has been a sycophant for the environmentalists. His bias was clear in his writing, but even more painfully clear in what he chose to write about and what he avoided to cover.

This move to Thompson’s office is a predictable and natural progression for him. He’ll do a good job continuing to cater to the far left and the environmentalists.

It’s funny that I once overheard John making fun of a reporter for going on to work for a political candidate. Hypocrite. But I guess the pay’s worth selling out for, huh John?

    A “veteran reporter”?

All that “environmental” reporting and not one reference to the 6th largest extinction event in life’s history on Earth, (now), or the scientific community that’s alarmed by it??

John is lucky to leave that right wing corporate megaphone.

No labor section, no environmental section, no cover stories on our local contribution to America’s thousands of daily foreclosures continuing since early 2009, the worst economy since the Great Depression, the highest disparity in incomes since the…Gilded Age, nothing but the tyranny of positive thinking at the TS.

The LAST fund raiser I went to for Mike Thompson was at the Eureka Inn… The room was stacked full of Timber execs.

Thompson voted for the U.S. Bankruptcy Act of 2005, authored by VISA and MC, making bankruptcy much more difficult to file for average Americans…just before average Americans bailed out Wall-Street.
He’s made NO effort to amend that mistake.

    Nothing liberal about it.

He voted for every bill to end inheritance taxes.Even The Founding Fathers warned how unbridled inheritance could recreate the nobility they sought to escape.
