Sunrise header

Good morning, sunshine! Thanks to AJ for the new header you see at the top of this page.  Check out his blog at http://www.thingamababy.com/

Times-Standard or HumCPR? Looks nice, thought the text could be a tad higher on the horizon.

  2. February 19, 2011 at 8:22 am

    Everyone is a critic.

I thought being immersed in the sunrise looked best. The height and font can easily be changed.

Now, there will be a complete day on the Herald,

A sunrise and a Sunset, Cool. I like the fact that the “H’s” are visible again.

And Yes, whomever said the HumCPR thingy kinda was correct with the left to right pan – better than last attempt at new heading imo though.

Keep it real – Keep it unique. The H.H. may be able to take over head media news market share in the community FOR FREE- can’t ya just feel it?

As far as the poster, will the same looky-lou lou’s who had a hissy fit over the R.G. Tank poster complain about something more locally directed at a smaller group of unknown persons….?

sorry , “you know” dark blue with the moon after sunset?

  16. AJ

I can change the sky. The limitation is with WordPress. I suspect the blogging software cannot swap out the title image in an automated fashion. Heraldo would have to do it manually several times a day.

    Where are the marijuana leaves?

Exactly, it has nice colors and trees and everything, but wouldn’t the vibe of it be more fitting for a Reggae t-shirt? Hey that’s an idea, Humboldt Herald t-shirts, and hoodys, and bumper stickers. I could be looking at the sunrise on my coffee mug right now. Blessings upon the omniscience of the rising Jahraldo star!

Like AJ’s response to the fog (though curious about the look of a foggy sunrise – the geese are pretty cute), also “Jahraldo” is kinda clever…If only there were “like” buttons for the comments, but I guess that’s what facebook is for.

What would the fog look like? Haze on the tree line? Fuzzy sky? My first appreciation for fog was watching it roll into the hillsides surrounding Arcata, but I’m not sure how to place it on this image without it looking like yuck.

Everyone assumes that is a rising sun and the Herald is a “rising star”.

A critic could say that it is a setting sun. The end of an era of liberalism in Eureka ?

  29. AJ
    February 19, 2011 at 2:33 pm

A critic could say that it is a setting sun.

Except I based my colors on photographs taken of the sky at 10 minute intervals. Sunsets are a different color, at least in my samples. This is specifically a winter sunrise when the sky is a paler blue. I haven’t shot a summer sequence, so maybe I’m wrong, but that’s my impression of the winter sky.

If the sun was setting it would be over water, not trees. We do still live on the LEFT coast.

  36. High Finance

That+ is only if you assume the view is from the beach looking west.

It could also be from a little bit inland looking west.

  37. Plain Jane
    February 19, 2011 at 5:07 pm

Poor HiFi thinks everyone has the same view he has. Many people who live far from the beach have a lovely view of the sunset over water, HiFi. Even me.

  38. tra
    February 19, 2011 at 5:27 pm

Not that is really matters, but P.J.’s 4:54 comment If the sun was setting it would be over water, not trees. is, in fact, inaccurate, at least for many Humboldt residents.

As HiFi accurately points out, It could also be from a little bit inland looking west.

On the other hand, HiFi also overstates his case by claiming there would be an ocean-view sunset only if you assume the view is from the beach looking west.

As P.J. correctly point out, Many people who live far from the beach have a lovely view of the sunset over water.

Though I guess that depends on what counts as “many,” and what counts as “far from the beach.”

Bottom line: The fact that it’s a treeline and not the ocean doesn’t, by itself, mean that it couldn’t be interpreted as a sunset.

For what it’s worth, to my eyes, it does look more suggestive of a sunrise. At my place, most of the sunsets tend to be a bit more pink than yellow.

At any rate, I like the new header. It’s cheerful and easy on the eyes.

inaccurate, at least for many Humboldt residents.

I created the image. I live on the coast. The sun rises over trees. The sun sets over cookie-cutter residential development. Between the two, I chose trees. As long as Heraldo has the image up, you’re living in my neighborhood. Sorry.

You could put one more color in the header, if you could find one.

I guess that’s why my daughter and I never see anyone else watching the sunrise. Dumb sky.

I won’t be broken up if you folks get tired of color. I had the trees and sky filters at my disposal, so I slapped ’em together. I’m not a graphic designer, so if a graphic designer would like to have a go, have a go.

AJ, it looks a lot like the T-S banner from its Northern Lights or one of their other publications. At a glance, it’s nicely done. But it is lacking a certain flair or something. I don’t have any design skills and I couldn’t do any better, but I do have a hyperactive critical streak. Nothing personal.

  54. AJ
    February 20, 2011 at 4:42 pm

Is Northern Lights still produced? I subscribe, but confess I don’t read Northern Lights. Having young kids dramatically shapes one’s interest in public events. I looked through my stack of papers and didn’t see it. For some reason, I recall it later being combined with the TV guide, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

  55. Ger Khoff
    February 20, 2011 at 5:13 pm

It’s a horrible, ugly graphic. Completely unoriginal, amateurish and hardly “local.” Could be anywhere in the world with trees. I wonder if there’s a local graphic designer who would have made some local dollars they could spend locally if they’d gotten the job.
But no, it’s always Amateur Hour here in Humboldt. Anyone who’s trying to make a legitimate dollar sans pot is doomed to lose jobs to some half-ass wannbe with a stolen copy of photoshop and zero talent or ability.

  56. Mitch
    February 20, 2011 at 5:19 pm

  57. AJ

I own a legitimately purchased copy of Photoshop, but the rest of your rant is spot on. Thanks for the uplifting testimony.

I was a web designer in the early days and had my fill of companies deciding to use amateurs. One time, I had a successful RFP, only to learn in my next meeting that the organization’s entire marketing team had been “sacked.” Six months later, the org debuted a new website that looked like it was made by someone’s uncle’s ex-wife’s son’s friend who has just read Learn HTML in a Week. Suffice to say, that particular arm of the organization was later sold and the daft replacement, with whom I briefly communicated, went on to greatness in the annals of the local newspaper’s crime reporting.

AJ, very nice job. Now we see a night scene, moon, and a new logo, ‘provoking graphic designers since 1996.’ Awesome, brilliant, and an ever-changingly nice touch. Will it turn back to a sunrise tomorrow morning?

  59. AJ
    February 20, 2011 at 8:36 pm

It’s a one-off, just a bit of fun for the evening. Heraldo still has to manually swap out images.

The degree to which some people are bothered by the change, or go to certain lengths to mock it on their own blog, speaks to how important the Herald is, or how much time people spend reading it. It could very well be a lousy title graphic, but a lousy title graphic on an unimportant website doesn’t stir anyone.

That said…I hate the bland colors…

    [ducks and runs]

  72. February 21, 2011 at 2:50 am

How about a hybrid of that, um, interesting header over on Rose’s blog and something with more of a Heraldo touch:

I’m thinking a giant steroid-ripped wrestler with a pointy hat mask from the header Rose’s blog is advertising. Said wrestler could be standing on “Humboldt Herald” while it’s on fire with fireworks shooting out the sides. And balloons. Lots of balloons. To top it off, in the wrestlers hands, presumably your hands, is a replica of the Security National HQ (or the Marina Center), which you are breaking in half while you growl, and stick figure representations of certain local celebrities fall out with comic-style dialogue bubbles saying, “Curse you Heraldo, you win this round!”

This, I think, would be an uber-epic header.

    K, I’m going to sleep.

    What a conservative bunch!

Give change a bit of space to breathe; maybe it will turn out you like it after all. Personally, I wish that dark blue moon header could come on every night, and I was a quiet fan of the complete redesign.

If nothing else, the redesigned header loses the all-caps of the original. That’s enough reason to prefer it, in my not-very-humble opinion.

  85. Anonymous
    February 21, 2011 at 5:23 pm

This blank blue header is aggravating. Why don’t all you kids in the Peanut Gallery sit down and be quiet so Heraldo can give us back some TEXT in the header?

  86. AJ
    February 21, 2011 at 5:26 pm

Mike B., Joel M., Big Al, and Ger Koff didn’t like it and they made their views known, but hey, you’re never going to please everyone.

Still, content matters more than style (at least in my book), so if we must go back to the boring old least-common-denominator heading, well, no big deal.

Unless you present a compelling reason, the header-go-round ride is done for the season.

Why do people still use that worthless browser?

    so sarree no workee

Geez, you’re like a vandal H. That which you can’t use you must disparage and degrade. Round HumCo most everyone over 30 loves to wax nostalgic about how great it was in the ‘good ole’ days’. Heck, I’m using IE, so its still the good ole days for moi. Use a genuine Western Electric slimline phone at home too…..

IE users are the ones who “can’t” in this situation. It disparages itself, but most of us have already figured that out.

Glory be! The header appears in IE. My trimline and gramaphone are resurrected.
