Richard Marks’ plea for attention comes to sorry end

Readers will recall that an honest-to-goodness elected official right here in Humboldt County threatened to out your anonymous host here at the Herald.

Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation and Conservation District Commissioner Richard Marks dangled the fruit right here on this very blog:

I can out Heraldo…..but it will cost. Give me a call. And yes, I can deliver.

He then posted on his blog:

I have been sitting on this for awhile. I was just wondering what you all think.

Turns out the only thing Marks is sitting on is his elected behind.  He now says he was only hoping for $5000 so he could pay someone else to figure it out.

Oh well.  At least he got some attention for his blog — and his penchant for little white lies.

Is this shit for real? And I do mean shit.

Please enlighten me…what’s the $5,000 for…comprehensive internet trace? Magnum P.I.? Giving “heraldo” a wad of cash for verbal permission? Really, I genuinely want to know the price of internet anonymity, and how five G’s can suddenly flush it.

Richard’s initial posts on this blog admitted that he didn’t know who Heraldo was; but he believed other blog owners, whose identities he did know, might know who Heraldo is and he threatened to out them to gain the info. Only later did he pretend to already know, apparently hoping someone would offer him the funds to bribe one of the other bloggers. He’s a nasty, lying POS climber who would do anything for another step up the ladder.

A huge part of the reason society is fucked is because widely respected members of all communities can’t participate whatsoever in important political happenings without destroying their careers. Doctors, judges, schoolboard members, city officials, police officers, etc. etc. Sadlyh, their silence is seen as consenting the status quo…as if all these people think caltrans should fuck with richardson grove, or stop 4/20 in the park…but they have to keep their mouths shut. In the corporate world, it’s the confidentiality clause…if prior psych testing didn’t successfully weed them out as potentially nonconforming first.

…all in addition to simply respecting anybody and everybody who just wants to live completely low-key and still be able to get a proper word out.

The internet needs to remain completely anonymable. New word: anonymable.

They expected someone who knows H’s identity to out him for exposing that Richard was a plagiarist as well as a hypocrite for using a pseudonym.

Anonymity has protected peons for millennium from self-appointed tyrants and petty, wannabe scoundrels.

Most Americans have an instinctive wisdom to know that publicly opposing orthodoxy is repressed with shocking efficiency. Just ask someone who spent a decade or two working in the public, or private sector who is willing to honestly tell you what happens to those who, “fail to butter their bread on both sides”, or “how a nail that travels too far through the wood must be hammered back”, or “how the tallest blade of grass is the first to be cut”, or as Mark Twain observed:

“We have 3 freedoms in America, the freedom of speech, assembly, and the wisdom to do neither”!

We are a nation rich in cultural repression and our Common ignorance of it attests to its effectiveness.

I use a pseudonym only because it communicates much more than my name, it refers to this era of unparalleled knowledge, matched only by the forces suppressing it.

Every other industrialized nation is rapidly preparing for new energy economies because every measurable environmental indicator continues in free-fall…Except in America, where the daily press, popular movies, academia, and elected officials combine to make the most effective propaganda machine the world has ever experienced.

How one nation maintains the positive illusion of “plenty for the deserving”, while extracting a planet’s natural and labor resources is the most extraordinary inter-generational heist in human history.

Richard, it’s time to quit whining about bad old Heraldo and start looking for some creative ideas to keep the Harbor District alive and maybe, just maybe, start producing some jobs. Every hour you waste trying to “out” Heraldo is time wasted that you could be using to do your job. If you really want to impress us, find some ways to get the Harbor District moving again. New boat ramp? Maybe some shipping? Or Short Sea Shipping? Try contributing something positive once in awhile instead of trying to tear things down (like Heraldo). Wouldn’t that be a nice change?

Back to the topic: I’d like Mr. Marks to explain to us what the “prog machine” is. And if progressives are a “hugely minority fringe,” then he might also want to elaborate on why he cares so much about them.

  51. April 24, 2011 at 1:42 pm

The “Prog” machine are anonymous “Progressives” who spend time on this blog. And they support most of the candidates that Heraldo has supported on this blog. And you all ready are familiar that they mostly lost their elections. So there views in the community are proven to be minority.

Yes, the great “prog” conspiracy to bring compassion into the political discussion: To protect the environment, the rights of workers, seniors and just about the whole “American dream” that faces threats by proposed legislation. Shame on them “progs”. Let’s rape the environment, move off-shore all American jobs and cancel benefits and health care for all. Let’s hear a cheer for the new “american dream”.

Elections tend to swing back and forth, and that hasn’t changed since you’ve hitched your wagon to the conservative pony, Richard.

  55. April 24, 2011 at 3:37 pm

I might add, Richard, that Mike Newman won by a plurality in his ward. The “progressive” vote was a majority. Pretending that liberals are a marginalized minority will not make it so, and pretending that this blog represents some sort of “machine” does not make it so. Bloggers, indeed are a small minority. Liberal Democrats are not.

  56. Plain Jane

  57. High Finance
    April 24, 2011 at 10:03 pm

The more you progs protest the more you show your nervousness that your time in Eureka may be past.

The difference between the statewide candidates and the local candidates is the non local candidates on both sides were fairly unknown.

Marion Brady and Larry Glass were both well known. If you didn’t personally know one of them you knew somebody who did. As a result Glass was trounced soundly. Frank Jager soundly beat the former Mayor prog. Nobody even bothered to run against Lance.

Mike Newman ran against a popular Kuhnel and even he won with a little luck.

The progs have fought real progress in Eureka for decades and their opposition to the Marina Center crystallized how out of sync they are with Eurekans. It woke Eureka up. Even Larry and Ron realized it toward the end as they cynically tried to hide their opposition to the M/C at the end. Too late.

“The more you progs protest the more you show your nervousness that your time in Eureka may be past”.

    What an idiot!

Eureka’s democrats comprise the registered majority but have never had a majority on the city council!

How does “their day pass” when they’ve never had their day!?

Republicans know damn well that Eureka has “the other majority” that’s either unregistered or abstains! It’s painfully obvious who is actually very, very “nervous”!

This is why republicans everywhere fear effective registration drives more than “progs”!

My sources tell me that Eureka’s bi-weekly protests by disparate progressive groups is a frequent topic among well-known republican Foobars. They know that all minority-rule legacies are tenuous, and can end abruptly when one little catalyst unites a real majority.

Meanwhile, we can pray that they keep singing their praises of “progress” for another bankrupt big box mall and bailed out sprawl.

    Chain of fools….

  61. April 25, 2011 at 6:21 am

Just a thought, Heraldo can out himself and take away all their power. Not that I’m suggesting he do it, but he could. (If he is actually a “he.”)

  62. April 25, 2011 at 6:32 am

What I don’t understand is, what would outing “Heraldo’s” identity win anybody?

Is it the unspoken threat of, “Now we know where you live and can mess you up?” Or, is it that they’ll know where to send the process server? Or, or? I don’t get it.

Or is it just the interminable lust for childish gossip and name-calling that so many people of affluence seem to find such a valuable use of their time? Is it that if we know the person’s identity, we can more easily switch to ad-hominem, personal insult mode and think we’ve won the debate by smearing the debater?

Of course, valid or not, smearing the debater usually works…

She defends the mob as decent middle class Americans. I don’t want to live in her idea of Amerikkka.

Relinking to a racist video is a tacit sign of support which mainstreams extreme views. It’s similar to how the White Citizens Councils served as a “legitimate” face of the KKK.

Look at the site that posted the video on YouTube, Largo. It is from Stormfront, a neo-nazi hate group. Rose claims that posting from racist sites is no different than posting from MSNBC. She excuses the racist mob without any concern for the free speech rights they violated while claiming these few men were trying to intimidate by attempting to exercise free speech in a virulently racist town. Her type of ignorance is poison to a free society.

    2. The plaintiff must establish that the balance of hardship tips in the plaintiff’s favor; and
    3. The plaintiff must establish that the subpoena is the least intrusive alternative available.

These factors, while mindful of the right to recover for legitimate defamation claims, ensure that a plaintiff will not be able to compel an ISP to disclose confidential identifying information when disclosure is neither necessary nor fair to a defendant who has not committed anonymous online defamation of character.

Right bitch, so now lawyer dude gotta prove libel to access Layered Technologies Inc..

What if it is three hundred IPs at all different ISPs?

Is this lawyer about to get Google’s records too? What is that is 600 IPs?

Hop up on that 4chan /b/ and see if “You are banned! ;_;”

For serious Marks, if not for Heraldo, Never would have heard of you if not for Heraldo. I don’t really know who any of the other bullshit politicians are who put up lawn signs besides maybe that Lytle dude. I never would have read all your bullshit opinions on all kinna shit if not for Heraldo. You owe Heraldo $5,000 for advertising.
