Humboldt Taxpayers League, others, lose tax-exempt status

A number of local non-profits have seen their federal tax-exempt status automatically revoked for failing to file an annual information return or notice with the IRS for three consecutive years.  The IRS posted the list Thursday.

Here’s a partial list:

  • Humboldt Taxpayers League
  • Humboldt Deputy Sheriffs Association
  • HSU Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists
  • Humboldt Bay Stewards
  • Rio Dell Chamber of Commerce

Full list.

And while the Humboldt Taxpayers League has failed to file with the IRS for three years, they are today scolding BOS Chairman Mark Lovelace over the budget.

The following information is from the IRS website newsletter. Filing the IRS Form 990-N (electronic postcard) can be confusing for first time filers. But, as you can read below, the IRS offers a reduced-fee way to regain the tax-exempt status:

TheIRS Identifies Organizations that Have Lost Tax-Exempt Status – Special Steps Announced to Help Revoked Groups

–The Internal Revenue Service today announced that it has released a listing of approximately 275,000 organizations that under the law have automatically lost their tax-exempt status because they have not filed annual reports as legally required for the past three years. If an organization appears on the list of auto-revoked organizations it is because IRS records indicate the organization has a filing requirement and has not filed the required returns or notices for 2007, 2008 and 2009.

The IRS has issued guidance on how organizations can apply for reinstatement of their tax-exempt status, including retroactive reinstatement. In addition, the IRS announced transition relief for certain smaller tax-exempt groups – those with annual gross receipts of $50,000 or less for 2010 and eligible to file Form 990-N, the e-Postcard. The relief allows eligible revoked groups to gain retroactive tax-exempt status and pay a reduced application fee of $100 rather than the typical $400 fee. More information, including FAQs and a Fact Sheet, can be found on the IRS website.

Reinstatement is simple but requires a committment–a small fee.It is the decision of the suspended group not the IRS

I’m sensing a possible solution to the state’s debt problems here.

“I give up!!!” I’m with Jean, you can’t fix stupid.

This whole thing is just another revenue generating device. You get to pay for a non-profit status. As this whole system comes crumbling down, we will wish we would have taken more control of the elections and the media.

The Humboldt County Tax Slayers League has been trying to sell the same anti-union and anti-public worker ideas for years. I wonder if they heard about the Wisconsin governor who tried to play that game and reawakened a sleeping giant, the American working class.

As the Executive Director of the Humboldt County Taxpayer’s League I accept full responsibility for having our federal tax exempt status revoked. I have been the ED for the past four years and have tried to comply with the myriad of reporting requirments for non-profits. Until this posting I had not been aware of, or notified, of this change in status. I will do my best to see to it that we resolve this problem as quickly as possible.

Some of those have trouble staffing their non-profits with volunteers and undoubtedly are on the edge of being solvent. Red tape for this sort of thing must be a real burden!

Once our local nonprofits resolve their revocation problems over not having filed the IRS Form 990-N (e-postcard) for three consecutive years, they now have new and evolving reporting requirements from the State of California. The following agencies have new requirements: Secretary of State, Attorney General and Board of Equalization. By the way, all nonprofits must file an annual 990 report; those with gross annual receipts under $50 thousand can use the 990-N (electronic postcard.)

Anyhow, Tax Exempt status – cool, time to chide all these tax cheats and evaders, just like GE and GM, BP, individual American ciizens with subsidy tax deals, etc…

So interesting to live in a country that which overtaxes, over-spends, wastes taxes, gives tax breaks to some, but not others, but the poorer you are, the more you are affected by the tax scams and pyramidal schemes that is ALL America, but filtering over to other world powers and their affiliated and well-connected powerful.

Actually the small non-profit organizations don’t have to pay taxes at all so they are not “tax cheats” since they do not owe taxes at all just needed to file an e-form that was not well announced by IRS. Actually the IRS has outsourced this filing to a private contractor. Our tax money being spent again,

  16. June 13, 2011 at 7:24 pm

All non-profits are tax cheats, get used to it!

Fix them books, lots of financial leverages to finangle!!! Make-up new line items for income earned and call it an expenditure, etc…. Ya boy, America the dumb.
