They’re asking for donations to “make improvements”.

Do they own the property yet, has escrow closed ?

  5. July 4, 2011 at 9:20 am

They will have to make improvements after escrow closes as you have reminded us ad nauseum.

  6. July 4, 2011 at 9:20 am

    Thanks for your support HiFi.

You are correct, 69er: Alma Mater, Latin, from alere “to nourish” + mater “mother.”

My point being, there is a total lack of openness on this group’s finances. They are operating in total secrecy and answering no questions.

You have no idea of where your money is going.

why is it that people like hi fi can’t shed their negativity even when the potential benefits for the neighborhood are great? perhaps the high level financial skills implied by the moniker could have been helpful as advice. instead it is all about the discouraging attitude and putting down citizens taking the fate of their community into their own hands. this is the kind of person/attitude/point-of-view that contributes nothing to a community or its efforts to foster a decent, livable hometown. what a troll!!

    July 4, 2011 at 10:59 am

While I doubt that the current city council could possibly be so cynical, it has occurred to me that forcing the Jefferson School project to proceed on donations, will inevitably bleed the resources of citizens who would otherwise donate to candidates who oppose the Brady Bunch.

The answer to proving me wrong F!@#’n fi is instead of attacking me is for your group to be open and honest to the public instead of hiding in secrecy.

will the class please come to order now???

  16. July 4, 2011 at 11:24 am

    Hello Hi Finance,

As long as we are talking openness in public money expenditures maybe you could give us a list of all the people who have gotten money from the first time homebuyers program that is run by redevelopment here in Eureka? The list is less than 100 I believe. And they have spent what? $10 million of taxpayer money?

    have a peaceful day,
    Bill

Are you posting on the wrong thread HiFi? Open and honest with the public is the topic of the other active threads.

  18. The Big Picture
    July 4, 2011 at 12:01 pm

Non-profits file public tax forms unlike the cumulative millions Eurekans have paid to the richest private club in town. The Chamber’s records aren’t open….only sycophants can claim they’re “honest”.

When Jefferson succeeds, our resident troll will hail the wisdom of Eureka City Schools and the Eureka City Council for showing how the private sector can rise to the challenge.

If Jefferson fails, our resident troll will hail the wisdom of Eureka City Schools and Eureka City Council for the wisdom of divesting from a neighborhood school.

Psychiatrists will tell you that It’s not enough to spin a victory from either outcome when a person suffers a well of unhappiness so deep that it must be shared by injury to others.

With every new jab against a neighborhood, and its supports, this buffoon reveals a very sad human being.

Thanks, HiFi for being so worried about the money I donated, although your “concern” is misplaced. I donated the money and I decided whether the risk is worth it. My only regret is that I couldn’t give more.

Looks like many here are on to Hi Fi’s self serving games. That he’s conservative isn’t an issue, conservatives can also be fair.

But Hi Fi is of the Arkley(HumCo) conservatives, needing to bring others low, as Ed cites. I’d guess Hi Fi’s greatest happiness isn’t from his own accomplishments but from feeling dominate over other people. Personally, I think its a mental derangement where feeling good comes primarily from schadenfreude.

    HiFi,

It is my understanding that the WCIA is now a 501c(3) nonprofit organization. As such, certain financial documents are available to the public.

Beyond that, what questions have you asked them that they have allegedly failed to answer? Or are you just making unsupported allegations of secrecy on the part of this group?

I agree with those commenting above who have noted your previous complaints that WCIA is buying the property when they have no resources to fix it up — yet here they are raising funds for that purpose, and now you’re complaining about that?

  24. July 4, 2011 at 4:46 pm

HiFi, is it true that you get your jollies from kicking small dogs and children?

  25. Anonymous
    July 4, 2011 at 5:12 pm

As a CPA, I have a bit (though I will confess, not a ton) of experience with 501 orgs.

Yes, they are required to file their annual 990’s, but as the West Side group just formed, I don’t believe they need to submit anything that the public can view until after the end of their first fiscal year.

I suppose I am in a minority here; I support the group and their efforts (have sent a small amount in, and dropped a few dollars in today when I was in Old Town with my kids). I am really, really admire the passion and energy of the group, particularly Heidi, and her total positivity, particularly when the new council dropped the purchase.

However, like HiFi, I am curious how they can possibly close escrow on this purchase; unlike him, I am hopeful they can do it, and believe that perhaps they have a financial angel out there helping them achieve this – this will be disclosed in the proper time – I don’t believe there is anybody trying to deceive anyone.

Hi Fi is entitled to his opinions, and I don’t think the slams that go his way do anything but make those of us who support the project look small.

  26. July 4, 2011 at 8:23 pm

I applaud the efforts of a grass roots community group.

… and to take a different spin on things in this thread, I do believe that our resident Super Hero, High Finance, has now a longer tenure than his previous ilk.

    Congratulations is in order.

Good post Anon 5:12. I also support this effort, with some skepticism though nothing concrete. I hope they prevail. It’s a worthy effort that I hate seeing people undermining.

Well Mr CPA, if they are not trying to decieve us then they should
tell us who put up the money.

  29. July 5, 2011 at 9:58 am

If only this: “Demand to Know” attitude was applied to the bigger arena of state, national and global issues. There has been so much scrutiny and investigation into this small neighborhood trying to have some control over their lives, and yet our infrastructure is on the verge of collapse. Taxes are only collected from workers, while trillions are taken out of the country by the wealthy and big business. There is an endless list of corruption and injustice that have a real, direct harmful effect on everyone of us. Our local Scrutinizers are more likely to defend things like Exxon taking billions off the shores of California, while the state goes bankrupt. At the same time they rail about openness and transparency in some tiny community group.
Why do these guys, in the name of conservatism; align themselves with that tiny minority of billionaires? Are they really satisfied with just crumbs from the master’s table?

  30. The Big Picture
    July 5, 2011 at 11:34 am

It is from those crumbs that they delude themselves that they are “winners”… even as every measurable economic, environmental and social category rapidly collapses around them.

The Johnny Carson joke is priceless.

Anon. 5:12 is unintentionally correct: when they express their endless attacks on a neighborhood, its little school, and its volunteers, it’s their “opinion”. When we question their destructive and hateful motives for doing so, it’s a “slam”.

Anon 5:12 is probably HiFi’s way of saying he’s sorry.

  31. High Finance
    July 5, 2011 at 11:47 am

Anon 5.12pm is not me and I am not sorry.

In your private moments all of you should ponder why it is that any questions about this group’s finances, any comments about their lack of openness results in such fury ?

If there is nothing to hide, why hide everything ?

  32. July 5, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Jesus HiFi, are you kidding? They’re just getting organized, and you’re bringing up their financials and then acting like they’re hiding something. You poor, poor, persecuted man.

  33. Not A Native
    July 5, 2011 at 12:44 pm

Hi Fi is simply an extreme partisan. He’s unconcerned about the funding and expenditures of HELP, but terribly worried that WCIA, the buyer in a publically announced and bid sale isn’t transparent. Gee, does HI Fi ask what the Eureka School board hiding here? The only thing being hidden is Hi Fi’s obessive fear that ordinary folks will join together and overcome economic tyrants.

  34. tra
    July 5, 2011 at 12:55 pm

    HiFi,

Perhaps you missed my question earlier, so here’s a second chance to address it:

What questions have you asked them [WCIA] that they have allegedly failed to answer?

  35. High Finance
    July 5, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Joel, they “bought” the property but have offered no payment other than the down and no proof they have the rest of the money. Supposedly they have someone that gave them $100,000 but they won’t name the person. It is not logical that a bank would loan money on this project.

For God’s sake man, why aren’t you curious !!

Finances, dear Tra, finances. How much money do they really have ? That should be the basic question anybody should have before donating more money !

  36. July 5, 2011 at 1:54 pm

“How much money do they really have ? That should be the basic question…”

Would “how can I help?” ever occur to you, HiFi?

  37. High Finance
    July 5, 2011 at 2:03 pm

    Try to think logically Joel.

If they really have the money to buy the school and only need 10 or 20 thousand for the playground Equipment then most of us are willing to donate.

But what if they are short big bucks to even complete the purchase ?

  38. July 5, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Using HiFi’s “logic,” they shouldn’t even make an effort.

  39. Goldie
    July 5, 2011 at 3:30 pm

HiFi are you saying that should they have the money for the purchase you are in for some playground equiptment? That would be just wonderful!

  40. July 5, 2011 at 3:34 pm

Isn’t there some piece of playground equipment that’s designed to spin a kid until they can’t even stand up? Hi Fi would be a natural for purchasing that one

  41. Not A Native
    July 5, 2011 at 4:35 pm

So Hi Fi is now saying don’t give money to help purchase the property because that would help them purchase the property?

First Hi Fi makes vague allegations that WCIA isn’t transparent. When that goes nowhere, he now pointedly complains that the money is really going to buy the property. But giving money for the purchase of the property is completely transparent because you know exactly what the money is going for.

What Hi Fi doesn’t want and fears is for WCIA to own the property. He’s afraid they’ll make a success of it without being dependent on wealthy people that Hi Fi admires and identifies with..

  42. July 5, 2011 at 10:23 pm

I do love the logo, it really is great, i can not wait for the community workparties and barbeques once they close escrow, I just hope it happens while the weather is still nice. This is really exciting!

NAN, I cannot believe you are a college graduate with those poor comprehension skills.

  44. The Big Picture
    July 6, 2011 at 11:13 am

There’s no denying that this poor, sad chap has thrown every “if” and “yeah but” at this project since inception.

Joel is correct that this unhappy creature seems to derive his pleasure from insinuating that a little neighborhood shouldn’t even try to save their little school.

NAN is correct that this stinks of Schadenfreude.

Using satire to shield his hypocrisy is getting old.

Since the Chamber’s books are closed to public review, how about sending that annual $100,000 to the Jefferson project and call it even?

The Chamber might have to double membership fees to cover the loss due to their low participation rate.

Public subsidies only become “commie” when they actually serve the public.

  45. High Finance
    July 7, 2011 at 8:43 am

Again I must use the word “bullcrap”. Thats twice this morning but so much garbage was posted yesterday.

As far as Jefferson, I only am trying to keep you people from swallowing the kool aide while being led like lemmings down the garden path. While you can lead the horse to the water but you can’t make him drink so you people aggressively insist of remaining mind numb followers. The boy who cried “The Emporer has no clothes” was also nastily insulted on the Humboldt Herald at the time.

The Chamber’s books ARE open but sending that $100,000 dollars annually to the Jefferson project wouldn’t even cover that project’s annual operating deficit much less contribute to the $600,000 purchase price or the $2.4 million dollar restoration fund.

But “The Big Picture” has a perfect record. He zero for 187 in his statements this year.

  46. July 7, 2011 at 9:18 am

Somehow HiFi, your version of due diligence is not convincing.

And an alternate aphorism would be, “You can lead a whore to culture, but you can’t make her think.”

  47. July 7, 2011 at 8:21 pm

HiFi, are you so stupid that you think some poor lender is being hoodwinked? Don’t you tink they do their homework as well? And you have the nerve to criticize someone elses critical thinking ability? Physician, heal thyself!

  48. The Big Picture
    July 8, 2011 at 1:00 am

This HiFi troll is a laugh-riot…predictably baiting his opponents with nary a suggestion of a fact before he’s customarily pummeled and vanquished…only to repeat the process in the next Heraldo issue…as if it never happened and without shame.

It makes his periodic complaints about Heraldo intriguing…since he seems quite satiated by his folly and the abuse that follows.

Several years ago I called the Chamber asking to review their financial records and the secretary laughed out-loud. They are NOT public documents.

How painful it must be for “anti-tax” right-wing radicals to be forced by their ilk to pay for a city’s costly mismanagement of a harassment complaint, capricious firing, and public welfare for a private club!

No wonder the continuing corporate bailouts have all but disappeared from the “liberal media”.

Right-wing ideologues are harming our community, just as they’ve tanked the world economy…who wants to be reminded?
