Welcome to Arkleyville, where the cops are still bustin’ heads and the ‘Ol Boy Network is alive and well. If a crazy kid is holed up in an attic, don’t flush him out with tear gas or wait him out while he exists without electricity or heat. Just send in the troops to light him up with a barrage of bullets. Much like the woman with the flare gun who only wanted her meds, dead. Not all, but too many of the EPD are nothing but thugs and bullies with badges.

HH you are still upset that Garr is gone and Larry didn’t get re-elected.

Kim Starr, or Verbina whatever, would be protesting the application of Katsup to a hot dog if she thought it would get her some publicity and provide her an opportunity to rag on the EPD.

Terrific name for a roller derby team, Heraldo.

Perhaps they could wear a combination plaid mackinaw and tie-dyed uniform to capture the essence of Eureka’s complex psyche.

I was pretty shocked reading the TS article and how boldly the police union rep declared this isn’t the public’s business.

I don’t blame the EPD as much as their masters. Although its true that EPD does decide which masters to obey, among the many claimants. Now that the old EPD guard has been brought back by an old guard Council, they know which side their bread is buttered on and feel free to “handle things quietly(internally), outside of the public’s knowledge”.

The real scandal is the “warfare” mentality that the old guard takes whenever they encounter dissention. Their goal is to inflict maximum terror and pain on any challenger believing it will be a deterrent, moral correction, and punishment. Its pure barbarism and tolerated because a fair portion of the Eureka populace knows no better. Eureka gives me the creeps.

If Thom Hartmann is correct, that the Bonus Army was the original Occupy.

What is there to learn from the way that ended?

That ending was left to Hoover- MacArthur, his aide Eisenhower and Major Patton.

President Hoover ordered the Secretary of War to “surround the affected area and clear it without delay.”

Secretary of War Hurley twice sent orders to MacArthur indicating that the President, worried that the government reaction might look overly harsh, did not wish the Army to pursue the Bonus Marchers across the bridge into their main encampment on the other side of the Anacostia River. But MacArthur, according to his aide Dwight Eisenhower, “said he was too busy,” ” did not want to be “bothered by people coming down and pretending to bring orders,” and sent his men across the bridge anyway.

“Flames rose high over the desolate Anacostia flats at midnight tonight,” read the first sentence of the “New York Times” account, “and a pitiful stream of refugee veterans of the World War walked out of their home of the past two months, going they knew not where.”
Credits due to MacArthur (who was too busy to care about his veterans), his aide Eisenhower and Major Patton.

I first learned about the Bonus Army in college. That is a period in our history that has been polished so smoothly that what is taught in high school bears little resemblance to reality. I remember how upset my parents were over the heinous lies I was being taught about the great hero, General MacArthur. They never got over their hatred of Truman for humiliating him.

The fault in Eureka falls squarely on the shoulders of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors as it was they who called the EPD out to remove the Occupiers from County Property based on their contention that camping is not allowed (no county law against it but there is a city ordinance) and that they do not consider “Occupying” to be protected under the rights of Assembly and Speech. ( see Meserve’s excellent My Word for more on this: http://www.times-standard.com/guest_opinion/ci_19346788 )
These points can be argued, but the use of the EPD — while they are with out adult supervision since their Chief was fired — as the “enforcers” of the County’s desire to evict the Occupiers is what’s unacceptable. They have a force of their own in the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies and that’s a force that not only has adult supervision but they also have a supervisor who has to answer to the voters. That provides for a level of accountability which cleary does not exist in Eureka.
Meanwhile the arrogance of the EPD force knows no bounds as was demonstrated by this hatchet job of their’s as reported in today’s TS:
Police association blasts councilwoman; association letters, city emails shed light on Occupy Eureka crackdown

This outburst toward Linda Atkins by the police association is purely
political. I now refer to the good old boys as Larry Glassing her.
Start the machine now, so she won’t get reelected. While, I would
not make all of her choices, she was exercising her right to free
speech. She did not put the police in harm’s way. If, there was
a question of security, then David Tyson should have marked
notice to the council people as confidential. It was simple logic
that sooner or later the demonstrators would be removed from
the area. The way to being a successful politician is to do nothing.
Linda, unfortunately tried to better a situation. If there is a fault
here, it falls on city management.

  26. November 18, 2011 at 8:04 am

I am giving Adkins credit for alerting her
citizens of potential police action (only hearsay). What I do not understand
is, who from the Supervisors was the architect of a 3 AM
wakeup and get-out? Who gets the credit for this particular populist-barbarism? Or is this pure murl?

  27. November 18, 2011 at 8:10 am

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the police kept the media away “to prevent a situation from getting worse and to protect members of the press.”

But according to the New York Times, one journalist told a police officer “I’m press!” and the officer just responded “Not tonight.”

Ponder Z is embarrassed by the actions of others for some strange reason but not his own bigotry. Is there some reason he feels responsible for Occupy protesters’ actions? If he had any sense the clowns his party is choosing between for their presidential candidate would spur him to focus on that circus for which he actually bears some responsibility, not people or causes he doesn’t support and never will.

Who is the proud public servant capable

will not be the scragglies, the ‘ragged but right’

The gaps in after-tax income between the richest 1 percent of Americans and the middle and poorest fifths of the country more than tripled between 1979 and 2007 (the period for which these data are available), according to data the Congressional Budget Office (CBO)

    http://www.cbpp.org/cms/?fa=view&id=3220

The gap between the wealthy and everyone else is greater today than any time since 1928. Anybody remember what happened then?

The basic problem faced by propagandists for the wealthy is how to distract attention away from these basic economic and historical facts.

‘Poopgate’ – Media Makes a Stink at Occupy Eureka
    Tim King Salem-News.com
A reporter stomps through Occupy Eureka demanding to know, “Did you poop and pee on the bank?”

From an unrelated, sort of unrelated story… published by SF Weekly: The Snitch

(EUREKA, Calif.) – A corporate media monster is trolling the Occupy Eureka camp and never has such a horrific display of ‘journalism’ been recorded and actually released by a station. ‘Poop and pee’ are the operative words in this story. It just might be the silliest story in history, or perhaps it is a look at the lower rungs of corporate media gone wild.

In this video, which is a raw clip from station KIEM Channel-3, the area’s NBC affiliate, the reporter just goes down the throat of activists taking part in Occupy Eureka.

It is a northern California city where the mayor and council are comprised of former city cops. They’ve attacked and arrested protestors under very questionable circumstances.

    Dan,
The chief of police (or interim as it may be) decides the details of the operation. He may have delgated those details to one of his underlings but your desperate search for blame lands on the shoulders of the lawbreakers, not the enforcers.

Should I ever have the misfortune of having to arrest you, I would reserve the right to protect myself with the advantage of surprise
(including the choice of time of day).

That, or simply wait like Arcata did, and you just might walk yourself to the nearest substation.

There’s a relationship between those two things. Tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy increase deficits; accumulated deficits become debt.

3am makes sense for a suprise attack on armed enemy soldiers. But for evicting unarmed protesters? Nope. Just goes to show the paramilitary mentality of the current leadership of the EPD, and whoever else may have been involved in the planning of that raid.

  52. Not A Native
    November 18, 2011 at 5:42 pm

And Gee, when the Sheriff’s office is gets a court order for eviction by force, they notify the tenant a few days in advance of exactly when they will be coming. How is it that the sheriff sees no need to surprise anyone in hundreds of evictions every year? In fact, they say they give specific advance notice to increase safety to everyone. Can you imagine the outcomes if they routinely evicted tenants at 3AM?

Everyone already knows the juristiction they live in anyway- your neighborhood gang grafitti will tell you, just phone them if you have a problem. I think we should just disband with public safety altogether, live on the edge a little, save big dollars, and build downtown bathrooms with the savings. Occupy can then repossess the vacant EPD building and all will be well.

Grouchy, perhaps? Seems like Arcata found a better way. It is too bad the local Occupy groups get muddied by local hangers-on just looking for a place to be. 73. November 20, 2011 at 1:00 pm

I heard that the reason the footage is down is that is is now evidence, as the person that attacked Betsy and Kelly was arrested on suspicion of felonious assault.

  74. November 20, 2011 at 1:03 pm

“One demonstrator was arrested for the felony assault of reporter Betsy Lambert on Thursday, November 10, with bail set at $5,000 following the infamous KIEM-TV filming of the ‘Poop and Pee Report’ and the subsequent minor altercation that allegedly transpired.”

Mark don’t use the Sentinel as a news source. Because it’s not news, it’s “advocacy journalism” whatever that means.

This would be the first I’ve heard about there being any arrest in that case. I’d be curious to find out if that report is accurate or not.

  77. November 20, 2011 at 4:18 pm

I heard it somewhere, then found it on the sentinel. Two seperate sources.
That’s a form of confirmation to me.
Lets see how it plays out.

You do know Charles Douglas is a committed Marxist don’t you Mark? Maybe that doesn’t matter to liberals of your ilk.

You have had your fun bashing the best policeman we’ve ever had now it’s time to stop. You’ve had your fun.

  79. November 20, 2011 at 4:28 pm

if that is true Betsy is just so very very lame…
I seriously doubt The Sentinel would print that if it weren’t fact.

I am not bashing Murl, he basically called me a liar. I am not, I have proof that at least one police officer used a baton on a protester. I am not going into whether or not force was justified, I saw the baton used, I have video of or and Murl said he had 1000 for anyone that could prove it happened.
    Murl , I want my 1000 bucks.

  81. November 20, 2011 at 5:22 pm

“You have had your fun bashing the best policeman we’ve ever had now” 4:24

Let’s be serious, the bashing was done by the police, as I
understand it at around 3 AM. I call that terrorism,
delivered by the color blue, the worst kind.

I do not argue “the best we have had,” because what we see could very well be an improvement from the past. Still sadly
    inexcusable.

Not to forget, Murl owes Mark one thousand dollars.

Have you tried writing to Murl or calling Murl to tell him you have the video evidence and would like to collect your $1000?

  83. Ghost Writer In the Sky
    November 20, 2011 at 6:03 pm

    A couple of points, Mark.

First I know you want to be taken seriously as an independent journalist, so may I suggest that when you say “the person who attacked Betsy and Kelly” you add in the word “allegedly” before “attacked?”

And just as an observer, I think it is curious how you are defending Betsy, because when it comes to push and shove between you and Old Murl she’s going to take a side. It’s not going to be yours. Isn’t that clear to you? It is clear to most of us.

I do hope you get your $1,000 and I hope you videotape the ceremony.

  84. November 20, 2011 at 7:22 pm

Good point on the use of alleged.
My point about the “alleged shover” is I AM ALREADY taken seriously as a Martial Artist and instructor and I can not abide a grown man putting hands on a woman.

    EVER.

As too sides, the facts are the facts, and they take no sides.

Once I am done bringing up the brightness, cropping and zooming I will be addressing the payment situation as well as giving the video to the person that was beaten and did not get medical treatment. I have already been in contact with his mother.

    Mark,

When I watch the KIEM video I see no evidence of anyone putting their hands on Betsy. Where do you see it? Do you have an enhanced version of it?

What I see is a clueless reporter assaulting someone with a camera. She is the one who should be charged.

  86. Ghost Writer In the Sky
    November 20, 2011 at 7:48 pm

The alleged assaulter actually may have a suit against Betsy and KIEM under the anti-paparazzi law signed by Ahnold in 2009

“LOS ANGELES — California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed an anti-paparazzi bill making it easier to sue media outlets that use photos that invade celebrities’ privacy.

A statement issued Monday says the former “Terminator” star had signed a number of bills, including the amendment to a decade-old law that allows fines against paparazzi who illegally or offensively take photos or recordings.

The amendment permits lawsuits against media outlets that pay for and make first use of material they knew was improperly obtained.

  87. November 20, 2011 at 8:36 pm

Pardon me if I was unclear, I have video of an Occupy eureka protester being hit, and I am working on enhancing it.

I have seen the video of the “alleged shoving” as well, and it seems to me someone shoved the camera person and or the reporter.

I do not own that video and was not on scene to say one way or the other.

I am just 100 percent against MEN putting hands on women.

You want Murl, who is working forever, to fork out $1,000 to YOU? Just for some loose words? What an opportunist. Tell that story again and change my mind.

  89. Plain Jane
    November 21, 2011 at 7:06 am

Loose words? You mean when he lied and said that no cops hit any protesters when Mark’s video shows not only that they did, but that Murl was standing right there when it happened? Or do you mean the lie that he would pay anyone $1000 if they had video of a cop hitting a protester?

  90. November 21, 2011 at 7:48 am

    Loose words?
    He said it twice.
I will not be called a liar.
If Murl had no intention of paying the 1000 he should have kept his mouth shut, especially since it was HIM that was lying about the use of batons.

  91. November 21, 2011 at 7:50 am

“Just for some loose words?” Anon9:31

He is the fricken Chief o’ Police. Loose words are
    everything.

    Loose words
Example 1: These protesters are citizens, protect them
and their constitutional right to protest.

Example 2: These protesters are commies and a threat to all we know as america- club ’em.

In other news, I heard Capt Buhne is now going to be a lawyer. Passed the bar.

  93. November 21, 2011 at 8:03 am

Maybe murl will hire Capt. Buhne
to defend against Marks’ right to
one thousand of Murls’ dark money.

Wld some of you rather the raid took place at rush hour or during business hours, chancing some1 to get run over, pushed out in the street,or putting innocent ppl in harms way who are doing business at the court house, etc? more ppl seems to cause more disruption and confusion dangering others not directly involved. 3 a.m. seems a good as time as any. What good argument do you have that it was not a good time besides it didnt fit into your schedule?

  95. Plain Jane
    November 21, 2011 at 10:29 am

False choices, RefFan. There was no reason for the raid to take place at all. Arcata didn’t have to do a raid. They talked with the protesters and negotiated a settlement. That doesn’t fit with your police-state mentality, but that’s what civilized people do to resolve their differences.

  96. November 21, 2011 at 10:30 am

Supposedly we don’t live in a police state, though honest people on the left and the right see us heading that way.

How about if the police address a non-violent act of civil disobedience with just arresting people in daylight so every one can see and know what is going on?

It is in totalitarian dictatorships that the police and the secret police act under cover of darkness. Places like communist China, Zimbabwe, Chile under Pinochet. There are dictatorships on the left and on the right.

    have a peaceful day,
    Bill

    November 21, 2011 at 10:57 am

Dear Murl, we would do well to consider the peaceful advice from Bill @ 10:30.

I do not mean to be naive here.
I’d like to hear what Murl says about rousting and pummeling at three AM. Maybe Officer Anonymous will clue us in OR is that more secret-police stuff?
I love the study of history, in that study secret-police stuff always plays the same role. Always.

  101. November 29, 2011 at 8:06 am

Is this what passes for transparency these days?

Simple question. Which of our brave strapping leaders
has a mindset that says 3AM for a scoot and boot?

If we can not answer simple questions, who the hell is running this crap. This is where someone chimes in with a deluge of impertinence,
everything but an answer. And we wonder why we are in deep shit?

The three AM was a slap in the face to any sense of civility,
    trust or transparency.
    Simply mean, vicious and cowardly.

  102. November 29, 2011 at 8:22 am

What pisses me off is that the 3AM
was paid for with our dime- yet if we ask who is it that creates this atmosphere of distrust and division, so that we might correct
flaws at the voting booth, we get no answers.

  103. Anonymous
    November 29, 2011 at 8:53 am

I agree completely, 3AM. I really hope that issues like this specifically come up when candidates, political figures and business people are at the podium selling themselves to us, and that they’re not let off the hook about it. We more than deserve answers about issues like this, we need them. It’s up to local media everywhere to do so respectively, that includes all the local rags and blogs.
