Jefferson Community BBQ

(Notice from Heidi Benzonelli)

Friends, Neighbors and Community Partners,

We are having a BBQ and community workday this Saturday January 21…rain or shine!

Please come join the community while we build our future. 10 am til around 3, BBQ somewhere around noon.

We will be at the future home of the Jefferson Community Park Gardens and Community Center, 1000 B street Eureka.  It looks like rain so we will plan most activities for indoors.

A flyer is attached, please pass it on!

This event is hosted by Westside Community Improvement Association and sponsored by First Five Better Together, Humboldt Area Foundation and Eureka First United Methodist Church.

A barbecue in January?!? Have you looked outside?!?

Gutsy move, I like your moxie. I’ve marked the 21st down on my calendar. I’ll bring my rubbers.

  2. January 18, 2012 at 8:39 am

Most of the work will be inside. We have pop ups and a covered area outside for the barbeque and a nice heated community meeting room to eat in. See you there!

I posted this in the Quick Notes (which are not so quick right now) a couple weeks ago but since this is on topic I will try once more.

I would like to suggest that the new Westside Community Center be designated as a polling place for the round of elections coming up this year.

The Westside needs an addtional polling place. The Wharfinger is nice especially for those who own and drive cars but those who must walk or ride the bus in order to vote find the Wharfinger’s location to be quite inconvient.

We have plenty of time to get this done.

    have a peaceful day,
    Bill

I agree that the Jefferson Community Park Gardens and Community Center would make a very good location for a Polling Place. Elections staff would be happy to conduct the required survey to see if accessibility requirements can be met in order to make it happen. I look forward to working you.

And that spirit of cooperation is why we keep electing Carolyn Crnich.

What kind of tools should we bring for inside work?
Brooms, mops, paintbrushes, hammers? I may not make it by 10am but I’ll be there.

  7. January 18, 2012 at 3:11 pm

And if HiFi shows up, I’ll personally buy him/her/it a hamburger!

Hi Fi will be mowing the lawn in an ascot (remember :)

and please bring cleaning supplies and rags that you like to use. we will be moving books, moving book shelves, cleaning a portable, sweeping and mopping,

We are also short atleast 1 shop vac
We’ll get the meeting room warm :)!

  9. January 18, 2012 at 6:45 pm

We are also short atleast 1 shop vac.

There was a guy advertising in the Free section of the Craigslist classifieds a couple days ago offering a couple of working shop vacs. The only reason I didn’t jump on it is he specified you had to take both of them.

I’m sure the vacs have been taken by now, but I digress. My point being you might want to keep an eye on the CL Free classifieds. Perhaps you could find some freebies to keep as permanent equipment for your project.

    Just a thought.

I spent 1 day last week mowing, weed wacking and picking up garbage. I enjoyed every minute, and look forward to offering help when I can. I continue to meet the most wonderful people who really give hope to our Community. Share your idea’s, your hopes, your dreams! Nothing is impossible. The vision and reality is bliss!

    Thanks E Streeter

And with that info., “you know who” will be finding every reason NOT to allow a polling place at Jefferson.

The status-quo knows it’s days are waning. The prospect of having some of Eureka’s other majority register and vote will not be tolerated.

Better do your homework now and get that ramp built!

It’s a great idea to build support for Jefferson AND get-out the vote.

    Best of luck.

One question, what is an “Ascot” ?

Aren’t you allowed to google over there in the CC offices, HiFi? A high class guy like you should know what an ascot is.

  16. January 19, 2012 at 9:29 am

Oh no, you don’t remember? Way back when, when we were guerrilla grounds-keeping at the school. Someone on the blog asked you if you would be there and you said “Yes, I will be mowing the lawn in an ascot”. I rolled on the floor laughing, it was a “Looney Toon style” of communicating something absurd. I absolutely loved your sense of humor. What happened?

  17. January 19, 2012 at 9:32 am

and hey, does anyone have a regular sized Weber to loan? We have 2 but could use another one. We are planning logistics and dont think a big big bbq will work. I am in the book. Heidi Benzonelli

Capitalization there, anon? You really have a titanic grip on things there, friend; if you are grasping at spelling and punctuation, you are really grasping at straws.

Hey Anonymous, grasp the idea of no punctualization or capitals as a tongue-in-cheek illustration on the relative importance of such. Duh.

Poor anon, caught with his pants down again.

Thank you to all the volunteers! We were able to clean and get all of the fir floors prepped to be spruced up. It was really astonishing to see how much we got done.

The city school corp yard donated 3 palettes of children’s books (the birth of a community resource library). We got bookshelves moved and mounted out in a portable and books sorted and arranged.

We moved (a ton!) of furniture into areas that the floor wont be refinished and swept and cleaned 10000 sq feet of gorgeous fir floors.

We bbq’d chicken and all beef hot dogs and brought in low sugar cookies, fresh green salad, fresh fruit, ice tea, coffee etc and were able to break bread in our warm community meeting room, full to the gills with volunteers.

We received support from First Five Better Together, Humboldt Area Foundation,The Eureka United Methodist Advent Tea and Sweat Equity (and more donations)from the People to have an incredible Community Building event.

Thank you to all our friends, neighbors and community partners for the continued outpouring of support.

Next currently scheduled event is March 30th where we will be working with HSU YES and Zoe Barnum, Amy from Americorps and the Community to plan a mural project for the playground retaining wall. Anyone interested in helping plan for this event please call WCIA Office at 444-2988 or look me up, I am in the book.
