A Buck for a Bag of Books

[Announcement from Friends of the Redwood Libraries]

It’s time for the ANNUAL BUCK-A-BAG-SALE! The Friends of the Redwood Libraries is offering amazing deals for you! Fill up a bag of books and it will just cost you ONE DOLLAR!

For the first time ever, we are opening the doors at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 27, and the sale will continue throughout the day until 7:30 p.m. The sale will continue on Saturday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. On Friday you must be a member—but memberships can be purchased for just $5 either at the door or ahead of time, and your membership lasts a whole year. Check out our website at  if you wish to purchase a membership on line.

The large meeting room in the Main Library, 1313 Third Street in Eureka, will be filled with non-fiction books, VHS tapes, CD’s, records, audio books, and stacks of children’s books. The garage has your favorite fiction—mysteries, romance novels, hard covers and paperbacks. Remember, JUST ONE DOLLAR A BAG, and come between 10 and 7:30 (Members) on Friday, July 27, and from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 28. As always, all of the proceeds will go to the Humboldt County Library System.

This is as good as it gets: for a single dollar, you can fill a grocery bag to the top with books for your summer reading needs and the library gets all the proceeds.

Sounds like a good deal. Does anyone besides me even read books anymore? Call me a Luddite, but I have no interest in a Kindle or any like product.

…and Kindle and iPads track what and how you read. They know if you finish the book and how quickly. This is used by publishers for marketing and making decisions about what is published.

I read books and I love my Kindle Fire, especially with “readability.” I read more news on it than I do books and I appreciate being able to read without another light source so for camping it can’t be beat. It’s also great for watching movies when traveling. It doesn’t distract the driver and reduces the number of times the kids ask, “Are we almost there?”

“Who is supplying the bag?” The Friends of the Library supply the bags, and they are usually pre-owned. Disclaimer: they MAY have grocery cooties, so wash your books before you eat them.
