Warehouse Workers Strike at CA Walmart Supplier

From The Guardian:

The striking workers at the NFI facility have filed an official complaint with California labour authorities on conditions that they say show inadequate safety protection, not enough access to drinking water in warehouses that can reach 125 degrees on a hot day, and a management culture that bullies them.

They also say that workers listed in their legal complaint have since been retaliated against by things such as demotions or reduced hours, and the threat of losing their job.

Meanwhile, more news from Mitt Romney’s America:

Some of the Sparrows Point steelworkers who took their employer up on an offer to retire in August and get a $10,000 bonus have been told they won’t receive the money after all, their union says.

Joe Rosel, president of the United Steelworkers Local 9477, said Wednesday that between 100 to 200 workers retired last month with the understanding that they were eligible for the bonus. Some — he couldn’t say how many — have since been told they retired too late to get it.

Sorry folks, when we shut the place down, we need to provide six figure bonuses to the people who matter.

    Thanks for posting this, Mitch.
I recieved some preliminary information from a Union Local attempting to gain representation there several weeks ago that listed some of the issues in this article and more.
Hopefully someday people wil realize that cheaper, shoddier merchandise carries some extraordinary costs that aren’t immediately reflected in the retail price.

Jeeze Louise, you liberals can’t have it both ways in a global economy! Do you want a job that kills you, or do you want to die on the streets?

walmart is encouraging this so unemployment numbers will be lower for Obamas fine plan of getting the numbers up. He really doesn’t have a clue about unemployment. But I think he knows he is lying about the numbers. This strike will go on a while. All kinds of GOOdlboy networking going on. This country is bigger that a lil ol community!

  5. September 13, 2012 at 6:01 pm

We can have a global economy AND jobs that don’t kill us. It takes creative thinking, innovation and an absence of avarice. Oh yes, and things called ethics and compassion for our fellow human beings. Walmart is a crappy company run by rich, spoiled brats, who would rather have another billion dollars than give their employees decent wages and healthcare. This is not a “liberal” issue. it is a human issue and what we want our world to be.

Well yes, it is a liberal issue. The laws are so worker/union friendly they restrict free enterprise. Why do you think the rich have created NAFTA? To get their businesses out of this country’s labor pool. I am not saying this is good. I just have an real understanding of why!. Libtards think they can get all the workers to join unions and force the businesses to treat workers well. And they have done this, at a cost of driving jobs out of the country. Well done, now you union boys can sit back and enjoy your full salary retirement as the country sinks into socialism.

And back into the hands of unregulated child-labor and resource extraction where they belong! “Better that it’s foreigner’s children and environments than ours”; “if we don’t exploit it someone else will”; “it’s the union’s fault”; “they appreciate the work”.

Sounds like conditions in Wal-Mart warehouse are the same as last year’s story about Amazon having EMTs standing by to treat their warehouse workers for heat prostration. And Amazon doesn’t supply any jobs at any wage here in Humboldt. Although they are finally being forced to level the playing field a bit by collecting CA sales tax.

  11. September 14, 2012 at 8:09 am

How can anyone talk to a bunch of workers about how bad the corporate-Bosses have it?
Let’s see, what fits? Vichy-Dupe? Good-“German”? Sorry for the WWII terms, but damn it, they’re so appropriate.
    I’m a worker. I support the union.
Has anyone noticed the whitewash going on in the corporate-media? First it starts with that Matt Damon movie where he’s a “Congressman” kicking ass and playing the hero. Now we have a “Docudrama” on History channel that is glorifying the “Robber-Barons” of old, and giving them a facelift. Called: “The Men Who Built America.” DuPont, JP Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, and a few others. Those guy’s then, just like these guy’s now; made their money by looting the US Treasury through corruption and managed infrastructures that they took personal ownership of after the taxpayers paid for them.
The gloves are totally off. The propagandists hold the only microphones in the country and the glorification of the old guard, will legitimize the glorification of the new guard.
The “History” in “History Channel” is an oxymoron, to say the least.
I’m sure in this propaganda-fest, the unions will be cast as the villains. Bomb-throwing Anarchists is always a good one. Communists, yeah, yeah; there’s a good one. Socialist Demons bent on destroying this country…take your pick. There’ll be plenty of false labels to choose from….and considering the strikes both here and in South Africa, it is certainly timely . A complete coincidence I’m sure.

Yes, it does sound like last year’s report about Amazon warehouses. But Amazon has cleaned up its act — at least in one location — in response to being outed in the press in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania:

This is the potential value of a functioning press. Conversely, the lack of a functioning press means that such problems never cause companies embarrassment and may never get changed.

Amazon has also started a PR program that includes offering tuition reimbursement to warehouse workers:

If nobody is reporting on problems, or if a business’ shoppers issue a collective yawn at corporate malfeasance as long as prices are low, the problems don’t get corrected. If a company fears its behavior will cost it on the bottom line, it will respond to being outed.

Let’s see here, employees in the most litigious state in the nation with the worst business climate, are complaining about working for a living? With the amount of lawyers and unions we have in a democrat party controled state, I’m not really worried about about the outcome.
What I am really worried about are the riot, murder and rape of our Ambassador in Libya and continued attacks by muslims at our other embassies against the United States of America.

Since our government isn’t who made the video which sparked the violence, I would say that our ambassador was killed as a proxy for a right wing nutter whose views no more reflect our values than Muslim extremists’ reflect those of the majority of Muslims. Religious extremists of every stripe have more in common with each other than they do with their general populations.

Now that the dust has settled, it looks like a bunch of fundamentalist Christians were aided by a fundamentalist Islamic cleric in Egypt to stir up chaos in the Middle East, and to give us an Arab Fall as a dark, election-year coda to the Arab Spring (while all the while blaming the Jews).”

“Nakoula Basseley Nakoula (born 1957)[1] is an Egyptian-American Coptic Christian thought to be the writer, producer and director of the anti-Islam film Innocence of Muslims.[4][5][6][7] The trailers for the film, after they were dubbed into Arabic, were cited as a cause of some of the 2012 U.S. diplomatic missions attacks….The Daily Beast reported that Nakoula was arrested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 1997 after being pulled over in possession of ephedrine, hydroiodic acid, and $45,000 in cash.[12] He was charged with intent to manufacture methamphetamine.[9] He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in 1997 to one year in Los Angeles County Jail and three years probation. He declared bankruptcy in 2000.[2] According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney he violated probation in 2002, and was re-sentenced to another year in county jail.[13]
In 2010, Nakoula pleaded no contest to federal charges of bank fraud in California and was ordered to pay $794,701 in restitution.”

He’s a right wing Christian, anti-Muslim extremist NUTTER. He obviously doesn’t understand that their freedom of religion is protected by the same amendment in our bill of rights as his freedom of speech. He knew that denigrating Muhammad is worthy of death according to their religion. Claiming to be an Israeli Jew, which he did, was to magnify the insult. If there were others involved in this plot to incite violence, they should be prosecuted for conspiracy any who aren’t natural citizens should be deported if convicted. I won’t be a bit surprised if he’s connected to rogue CIA working desperately to get their neo-con faction back in control.

Romney was not only inappropriate in trying to make political points over dead Americans, he lied about what had occurred and then doubled down with more lies. That he has been condemned by many conservatives, including John McCain, shows how outrageous his behavior has been. He is so desperate to win the presidency that he seems to have lost any moral compass he may have once had. I won’t be a bit surprised if Romney was involved, his own little “September Surprise.” Sounds a bit over the top, but remember Reagan made a treasonous deal with Iran so they would hold American citizens until after the election to help him win. The sort of people who would endanger American lives, and there is no doubt they were in danger 24/7 for 444 days, for political gain is so far beneath contempt that I don’t have an accurate word for it. Evil is way too banal.

Meanwhile in Michigan, opposition to the privatization of Michigan installing “emergency managers” to close public schools and turn them over to for-profit charter schools, sell public property to their cronies for pennies on the dollar, laying off public workers and generally looting the state is bearing fruit. By Michigan law, when this referendum qualified for the ballot, the state must suspend their “EM” program until the voters make the decision. The governor, at this point, is still dismissing city / county governments and installing EMs and the pace of the looting increases. If there is any justice, when this state-wide dictatorship is thrown out by the courts or the voters, the corrupt deals they made will be reversed.

It appears that this bogus movie B.S. is really a screen for Al Qaeda. The Libyan attack was an 911 anniversary attack that was pre planned. In fact the vast majority of these attacks are in countries where Al Qaeda and its minions are active. And before we go for the bait it is important to remember that these folks have killed more innocent muslims than any other faction. They are ignorant bigots and have killed thousands of women and children. They have nothing to do with the core message of Islam which is one of humility and compassion.

People favoring something based on false promises of what the consequences will be often change their minds when they see the reality, which is what is happening in MI today. The law has been suspended by the courts but the governor is illegally appointing EM’s currently. I can understand why you would favor it because it is an extreme right wing looting of MI’s publicly owned properties and resources, as well as future education funding to privately owned, for-profit charter schools. The people will now have a direct vote with the knowledge of the reality of this legalized looting and the truth will prevail. Votes, not opinion polls, are what matters.
