Instruction Manual For Life

I’m posting one of my all-time favorite youtube videos, because it deals beautifully with the issue of religious fundamentalism that I think is hiding behind the current local issue of murder music.  This video was put together by two remarkable twins, “Theramin Trees” and “Qualia Soup.” I wish it were offered at an assembly at every school, every year.

Different flavors of crazy is still crazy.

Nobody said religious dogma has to be in your cabinet. Maybe yours has photos of Sam Harris on the front. (Mine does.)

We all have the choice to live by conviction or convection. Conviction is harder: you have to decide if you want your books in LC order or Dewey.

5:07, religious dogma *is* the cabinet. An atheist wouldn’t have a cabinet in the first place. This video is advocating for crazy people to be nice to each other, not that people should seek help for their mental illness. The video legitimizes delusional behavior.

If an atheist, the drawers of religion would be empty. Gay unky has a lavender (blue?) drawer.

What kind of word is: “Fag” to be using? Unless you’re talking about “Harley” riders, you shouldn’t be using a word so filled with disrespect and hatred.

    10:10,

I don’t know anyone without a cabinet. If you think you don’t have one, I’d suggest your cabinet might involve invisibility, and I’d remind you that we all have a huge invisible blind spot near the center of our field of view.

The first step in properly using your cabinet, IMO, is to realize that you have one. It doesn’t need to contain dogma of any sort.

One aspect of the video that I love is that both standard Christianity and an alternative are presented as filling only 2 (of 12?) spots. The religiously-rejected uncle has filled only 3. The biblical literalist cabinet, quite properly, has scores of drawers that, because contradictory, simply won’t stand up.

The young thinker, and most of the examples at the end, have larger drawers and nothing is left empty. The drawers come in a variety of shapes and colors, and the structure of the cabinet itself is variable.

The only thing that comes to mind as a potential improvement would have been leaving a door or two wide open.

I liked it – what’s to be arguing over? I’m not taking the bait.
