Candlelight vigil for IHSS workers Friday 11/9 6PM at the Courthouse in Eureka

Despite a neutral mediator’s statement that the County can afford to pay for a salary increase for Humboldt County’s minimum-wage-earning in home support workers, the County’s Board of Supervisors has refused them the extra quarter. That’s shameful.

Help these workers call attention to their situation (and that of their clients) by joining them at 6 PM on Friday, in front of the Courthouse in Eureka.

I will be there. As the North Coast Journal pointed out County Health has a bunch of money to have folks on paid leave for over a year. I am sure they could find a way to bring these important workers pay up a notch or three. It is a shame to see the people who take care of our ailing citizens being paid less than the worker who cleans the monkey cage.

The problem, Goldie, seems to be that if they give the home healthcare workers a raise, that sets the county up to give all other county employees a raise. That’s by union agreement, I believe.

So where does the money come from?

Fred, that is not true. And should it happen to be true it needs to be changed. There is no reason… none, to keep these fine working people at such a low raise.
