Larry Glass, Nancy Abrams to Run for Eureka City Council

In a move that is sure to inject some life into the City Council race, Larry Glass will announce his intent to run for a seat in the 1st ward at a press conference to be held on Thursday, August 10 at 12:15pm in front of city hall. Vocational counselor, Nancy Abrams, will also announce her hat-toss into the ring for the 5th ward seat.

Unlike their opponents, Glass and Abrams said they support a public process to determine the best use of the Balloon Tract.

Update: The press conference is at 12:15, not 2:15 as previously reported.

    Well, this makes things interesting!

The LOWV should probably just have one big candidate forum since they’re all playing for exactly the same voters anyway.

Glass on the city council, now wouldn’t that be special?

It just keeps getting more bizaar!

League of Women Voters. It’s probably your male-centered perspective that kept you from knowing that. :&)

    Right. Natural pigishness.

Now THAT’S the kind of thing I’d expected to see: a clearly defined Left vs. Right, Protectionist vs. Non- Protectionist. I expected to show itself earlier on, though.

I know this is off topic, but I’ve been traveling the past week and wanted to add a local tidbit to your Little House On The Prarie post. It may surprise you and others to know that Robin Arkley Sr. has made legal arrangements to have his house in Arcata destroyed if neither of his kids move in upon his death. It seems his hatred of “hippies” is so intense that he will not chance it falling into their hands after he’s gone. Pretty wacky, huh?

That sure is some hippy hatred. If it’s true, I don’t know how he manages to live there.

Is it hippy or hippie? They’re trying to figure it out over at Eric’s blog.

    Isn’t Glass from Arcata?

    August 10, 2006 at 10:07 am

I’ve read some on-line bickering about where he lives. But if he lives in Arcata I don’t think he would be qualified to run for Eureka City Council.

Hey 5:45: you should have said “none” rather than “neither” when refering to Arkley Sr. as he has three children, not two.

The report about him intending to demolish his house made the rounds here in Arcata several years ago and was widely regarded then as fact. I have heard nothing since to refute it. It’s really a shame, because it is one our finest examples of Queen Anne Victorian architecture and should be preserved for that reason alone.

Residence is one of those somewhat silly things in election laws. I believe all one has to do is rent a room someplace in the city to accept mail (and register to vote at that address) and they’re considered a resident.

It’s not unheard of. I believe Mike Thompson lived outside the 1st congressional district when he first decided to run for congress, so he rented a place in St. Helena.

Well the real question is how can the City Manager live outside the city?

Let’s face it, David Tyson runs city hall, makes all the recomendations to go before the council and sets the budget.

I’m just saying what difference does it make where they live. If the guy who calls the shots lives outside Eureka why should it matter were the council person lives?
