Glazed

From start to finish, the infamous “Rob Arkley shoved Larry Glass” incident delivers a host of outrageous rhetoric.

Steven GlazerIn an interview with KSLG’s John Matthews, PR BS professional Steve Glazer delivered a giant load of contradictory garbage in hopes of boosting his bosses image (and development projects).

Glazer identified himself as a spokesman for the Arkleys and their “Marina Center” project. Apparently, there’s no difference between the two.*

Glazer accused Glass of being on a “crusade” against the Home Depot project, using the word so often that armored soldiers on horses literally stormed out of the speakers as the interview progressed. As Pavlov would have predicted the butt-kissers are dutifully repeating it.

To scuff Glass’s rep, Glazer evokes war-president Bush, Iraq and collateral damage all in the name of his seemingly mid-evil holy war against the city councilman.

Big G says the charges against Arkley were politically motivated — an impetus completely foreign to Arkley, we’re sure — and blames the “power [held by] a city council member” for making the investigation happen in the first place.

What? While it’s true that cops often exercise their power based on personal biases, Glazer’s point that the investigation only happened because Larry has “control” over police is the swiss cheese of all arguments.

The Glaze rewrites history by accusing Glass of flip-flopping his focus from the physical altercation to a threat directed at Larry’s upcoming vote on the project. Glazer conveniently ignores Larry’s interview with KHUM the morning following the incident, where he first reported Arkley threatened to “destroy” him if he didn’t vote for his project. Soon after a local lawyer called KHUM with criminal code sections detailing the illegality and consequences of threatening a public official with the purpose of influencing his/her vote.

To top off his $piel, Glazer suggests Larry make amends with Arkley by lending an open-minded ear to the Home Depot center when it’s heard by the city council. “We hope he’ll give us a fair hearing,” said Glazer, including himself in the deal. He declared the big box would improve Eureka’s downtown and benefit the “community,” which Glazer thinks he knows something about despite being the Mayor of Orinda 300 miles away — which incidentally doesn’t have a Home Depot to HELP it’s downtown.

So when will the blessed event come before the city council? “In the near future,” said G-Money. Just as soon as they figure out a miracle to save them from the horrendous traffic jam snarling the Environmental Impact Report and preventing its presentation to the city.

The Humboldt Herald extends a big “thank you” to radio stations KHUM and KSLG, who aired timely interviews that gave listeners the low down on this story from beginning to end. Starting with Mike Dronkers’ interview with Larry the morning after, to John Matthews interview with Glazer following Mr. Suburb’s appointment as Arkley’s messaging czar, and finishing it up with the post saga interviews aired Friday.

*Any cross word against Home Depot or the Marina Center will be seen as an act of aggression against the Arkley offspring.

Sometime in the 80’s the Republican Party – which before that had been somewhat diverse- allowed itself to be hijacked by Christian fundamentalists and tax cut wingnuts, and the Cult of Reagan, all orchestrated by the usual (now global) big business interests.

The real cloth coat Rational Republicans will someday step forward and reclaim their party from this mess- good luck to them in that but we must move forward now.

What has now happened could have been predicted. Umm well it actually was…..just not enough of you listened.

I would like to see the statistics on government ownership defined by party affiliation Anonymous at 8:41. Also how “ownership” might be properly defined for a syndrome that is primarily an ownership by proxy scheme.

I would also note that being a millionaire is middle class these days and not a level of assets that would qualify one as being wealthy. Given a million bucks a person could buy a decent house and car, pay their taxes and be broke again.

There is no debate, that I am aware of, that Mr. Arkley has more than a million dollars in assets nor is there any doubt that he wields an unseemly amount of influence in local politics for the apparent purpose of increasing his bottom line. While it may be possible that he will do so to everybody’s benefit, the evidence suggests otherwise. Attempts to stifle discussion of the matter(s) or muscle the dichotomy in his direction also suggest that his bottom line increase will come at the detriment of others. Many others.

“I would settle for any non-Bush president as soon as possible and if all we can do is lessen the level of evil, it is still worthwhile. Progress is not always fast.” We cannot allow the Gerald Ford ploy (or any variation on that scheme) to work again. Replacing one puppet with another does not address the real problem of the evil puppeteer; it just lulls the electorate back into enough compliance for the “evil-doers” to achieve their goals. The level of evil was not lessened at all but being quietly reinforced and then brought on full force behind the facade of an actor with a carefully crafted script in 1980.

It already seems like there will be no real change in the next presidential election. Hillary had already become the front runner in collecting money from the “defense” industry many months ago.

When Nader starts supporting “deregulation” of trans national corporations he will be at the head of the parade in debates.

I would also like to differ with Rose on one detail which is that their are often more than two sides to any given issue and if we think in those terms we may find it easier to find common ground if not consensus.

As for the current Arkley vs. Glass dichotomy, I think it is important to look at the pressures applied by Mr. Arkley that are much more powerful than a simple angry shove. Just as we know that Charles Hurwitz is a crook of nearly insurmountable proportions we can see the motives and methods of Mr. Arkley without benefit of a microscope just as we can see that someone has a certain advanced disease without necessarily viewing a single damaged cell under a microscope.

you can’t deny that Glass was an outspoken opponent of the Marina Center

Why would I deny it? I thank him for it. So do the majority of voters who elected him. But calling his position a “crusade” is inflammatory nonsense that reflects badly on the speaker rather than the target. Larry has legitimate reasons for opposing Arkley’s project. Sadly, Arkley appears like a spoiled brat with a sense of entitlement who can’t handle any points of view that don’t conform to his.

Its just the usual BS after a legal process where the facts are released. The un-indicted accused claims “witch hunt”. At least the un-corrobated accuser isn’t claiming “whitewash”. That says a lot about Mr. Glass’s character.

I wish more of the evidence that the AG considered would come out, including names of the persons the investigator interviewed. Doesn’t Rose want to know “the names”?

I agree, that in fairness to RA, not every rumor or innuendo should be released to the public, since they didn’t rise to the level of “probable cause”. But the shoe is now on the other foot, since RA is now making accusations. Mr. Glass deserves the same fairness that RA had asked for. But then, there’s the lesson. RA isn’t ethical enough to call for the fairness to others that he demands for himself.

Is any part of the police investigator’s report public information? Can anyone be convinced to leak it?

Not that it was particularly frequent, but when he wanted to go drinking, we drank alot. I mostly drank Absolut and he always drank Johnnie Walker Red. There was usually a nice dinner, but the whole point was his need to drink. I will say the nights were mostly fun, but there was a creepy undercurrent and his anger was always evident. Eventually I was exlied like dozens before and after me and those binges ended as abruptly as the started.

Both of those points are blatant lies, and he knows it. It was very generous for him to be giving away those anti-Arkley stickers at the Works, wasn’t it? Glass, owner of The Works, said the nonprofit group’s numbers are growing, but estimates it’s in the hundreds. As of Saturday, 102 people had signed a petition against the Marina Center.

“Please join the Citizens for Real Economic Growth in our
efforts to ensure Humboldt Bay’s brightest economic future
We the undersigned oppose using the waterfront Balloon Track property for a large retail development.

Capping is unacceptable. Force Union Pacific to clean up their mess.
We petition our government to hold those who have fouled this former tidal marsh responsible for their actions and to clean it of all contamination. Paving over a bay-front wetland is not an acceptable solution to toxic contamination.

Respect the will of the voters.
We expect our government to fulfill its earlier commitment to conduct an objective public study of what the community wants done on this publicly-zoned land. Eureka’s voters have already rejected a proposal to change the zoning to allow big box retail development on this waterfront property and we expect this council to respect the will of the people.

Create a vision for the last waterfront parcel.
We expect excellence in the planning and design of our city and a visionary approach to the use of our limited and precious waterfront.”
