Mr. Rodoni goes to Sacramento

Supervisor Roger Rodoni went to Sacramento last week for a presentation of reorganization plans submitted in the Pacific Lumber bankruptcy case.

The presentation was attended by parties involved in the 1999 Headwaters Agreement.

Rodoni discussed the event at Tuesday’s supervisors meeting. He alluded to many lawyers in the room who reminded the group “several times” that California had little — if any — weight in the bankruptcy outcome because the decision rested with the judge in Corpus Christi. The lawyers reportedly pointed to the decision to keep the case in Texas rather than PL’s Golden State turf.

Such lawyerly observations are funny in light of statements by shameless Palco gasbag Frank Bacik who told supervisors last October they needed only to board a plane to Corpus Christi to influence the court. Yet the lawyers in Sacramento seem to think the whole state of CA is but a flea on the big dogs in Texas who actually run the show.

Well, good.

Rodoni characterized the crowd as “not pro-more-regulation” and highlighted complaints from one unnamed participant who suggested blame for the bankruptcy lies with the Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP).

HCP

Which leads to the question:,  If HCPs lead to bankruptcy, why do other timber companies want them? Simpson (Green Diamond) has one, and Mendocino Redwood Co, which is vying for control of PL, is in process of getting one.

Some people call HCPs a “license to kill.” But some timber companies use them as a license to whine while gaining access to areas that would otherwise be off limits due to…wait for it…habitat protection.

    So the environmentalists won?

Is Roger still “hoping for the best” or has he got a new stratagem? Whichever it is, I know he has only the economic and environmental best interests of our citizens in mind. Just look at his deeply held beliefs about marijuana legalization — that we learn about before every election.

At least with Roger we have a supervisor who’s not beholden to out of state corporate interests.

Yes 06em. That would be horrible! He would put their interests ahead of ours regardless of the damage they do to Humboldt County. Thank the goddess he isn’t an out of state corporate toadie! loi

I like the fact that Rodoni seems to be throwing his support behind the EPIC endorsed plan. If a plan can get Rodoni and a major environmental group like EPIC it must be the way to go even if Lovelace/Miller are pushing their own takeover plan.

Lovelace and Miller are pushing a takeover plan? Where and how?

Roger actually doing some work? What’s that about? Oh yeah, he’s running or re-election. Must be great to have a job where you only work for a few months at getting the job and then kick back and sleep for 4 years after you land it.

Hurwitz must have given Rodoni some gas money.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and Roger will move to Texas where he can live rent free.

The HCP is a joke. Companies such as Green Dimescam and the MRC, and even environmental groups like the Nature Conservancy and the Forest Stewardship Council, want to appear “green” and “sustainable” for public image. How is herbicide use, clearcutting of all types and perceptions, and steep slope logging “green” or “sustainable”?

    great graphic. says a lot.

Yeah — that’s the best description of an HCP I’ve seen yet.
