Confidential

Psssst.  Hey, Casanova.  It has come to our attention that you need a few pointers on how to keep your “secret” encounters secret.

Moving your play dates outside the office is a good first step.  You’re a fast learner.

But on Wednesday afternoon, when you had that, shall we say, meeting in a red SUV tucked in the hidden reaches of a dead end street at Cooper Gulch? Way too obvious.  Even that semi-secluded nook has witnesses.

Your truck, which you parked a couple blocks away, is too recognizable. Not to mention your own fine self — people know your mug.  Hurrying along while looking over your shoulder like a nervous dude on a secret mission only attracts attention.

Your lunchtime rendezvous lasted about 40 minutes.  You were seen both coming and going — let’s make that leaving and arriving. You departed the scene a little after 2pm. Your, uh, colleague, the lady in the red SUV, drove away two minutes later.

The point is this: if you want to keep these matters on the down low you might consider an actually private spot further outside city limits. Unless you get a thrill in the risk of being seen.  In which case you should feel breathlessly busted.

  3. Plain Jane
    September 4, 2011 at 7:28 am

Don’t know why anyone would assume there was any stalking involved. Well known people who have illicit rendezvous in public places are begging for scandal. Don’t blame the people who see them.

  4. Dave
    September 4, 2011 at 7:40 am

The question is what well known person? I don’t see the purpose in hinting some public figure was being bad…and leaving it at that.

If it even happened.Pardon my skeptism, but when you have news like that what revelance is it to your readers?

Frankly I’m surprised you wasted your time with this tidbit.

It was probably to let the guilty parties know they were seen, Dave. There’s no doubt a lot of people already know who they are, but if I was a public employee who drove a red SUV, I’d be trading it in this weekend – out of town.

  9. Mitch
    September 4, 2011 at 8:19 am

    OK, Heraldo, a few questions.

    1) What’s the point?

    2) Why is this different than someone with a personal vendetta outing a neighbor having an affair?

    3) If you’re so convinced you want to publicize this, why did you leave the names out? Legal reasons?

    4) If it would be legally dangerous with the names, what makes you think that it’s a legitimate thing to do?

    September 4, 2011 at 9:00 am

Mitch, the point is: if this happened, it shows a huge lack of ethics in his/her personal life and does this lack of ethics carry over into his/her professional life? If this is a public official those decisions effect tens of thousands of us.

  12. Anonymous
    September 4, 2011 at 9:17 am

    This entire site lacks “ethics”.

  13. Goldie
    September 4, 2011 at 9:28 am

This entire site is simply a site. We are free to ignore it or not but city officials make decisions that influence our funds, our lives and our future. What sort of folks make those decisions and what level of ethics they practice should be common knowledge as it effects the commons.

Think there’s a general negative reaction to this posting. The conundrum for progressives(liberals) is retaining their transparent, honest, and equitable values in an adversarial environment that often rewards deceit, greed, prejudice and abuse of power.

Obviously, its not purely black and white, finding an appropriate strategy is the tough challenge. IMO, this posting goes too far into the dark side.

  18. tra
    September 4, 2011 at 10:07 am

I think the original phrase was “I couldn’t care less…” and for some reason it got shortened into “I could care less” — even though a literal interpretation of the truncated phrase means exactly the opposite of the original. Language can be a funny thing that way.

    the wheels of political damage control grinding into their BS churning functions;
it is all too much as the two-legged meat puppets play out their silly dances of pretension and hypocrisy.
Bring on the elephants and jugglers… the clowns have the center ring.

And I want to convey my deep personal thanks to all of you who make this mad magazine version of peyton place so profoundly entertaining. Carry on and please don’t ever stop. You bring light, life and color to our dreary existences.

Tapperass said, “but seriously, it is kind of fun and sad when you discover an affair. Sometimes you happen to be at the right place at the right time (or wrong place, etc.)”

Or you happen to be going about your life in your own home when public faces pull shenanigans practically in your front yard.

As for the “stalking” suggestion…now that’s funny. Stalking implies pursuit. If the person in question blunders into view, that isn’t stalking. If he chooses to act weirdly suspicious in public, the public just might notice–ya think? If I decide to change my clothes in the town square, I can’t get pissed off if someone points out the holes in my underwear.

Of course there could be some innocent explanation. Maybe there just wasn’t ANYWHERE ELSE to take a meeting that day.

If Captain Crunch was a cereal cheater, a soggy womanizer, would this reflect on his morals, decisions and his trust with the constituents if he was, say, the city manager of a small town? The art of cheating can contain such activities as sneaking, lying, and breaking promises. Wonderful qualities. Would you want to see what these qualities look like when reflected in the Post Toasty City budget or the spending of Measure Honey Nut O funds?

  44. Anonymous

The difference here is that there is concrete evidence ( an accurate vehicle description and license number), noto to mention a long and storied history of similar behavior (a former eureka now arcata employee, a current eureka employee, a local realtor, a rebuff by a dispatcher that cost the city humdreds if thousands of dollars, a current elected official. The List goes on. Get a clue, people.

I’ve obviously awoken in the 18th century. Your violation of ethics is based on the salacious assumption of what occurs between a man and woman when alone. Taking a few observations, adding in your assumptions and more details, and branding with a conclusion. Public figures or not a person has a humane right, if not legal right, to their private life unless it poses a national security risk. Most sensible adults in the 20th century have moved passed the Talibanesque approach to relationships and politics.

As far as the others here, it doesn’t take much to figure out where the finger is being pointed. This blog has been been centered on going after the city manager and 4 of the 5 current members of the city council since at least the day after the last election, if not much longer.

This town is crazy corrupt right now, and it just so happens that I am fucking sick of the corruption. I speak for me, and not for anyone else on this blog-so when our city manager is out fucking another, yes, another person other than his wife, it just highlights that he believes he is untouchable, and that’s it. If you are so fiscally conservative, then why aren’t you concerned about measure O funds, why aren’t you concerned that Dave is proposing a $55,000 curtain for the muni, $22,000 in new carpeting and $150,000 paint job for the adorni center, why do you not give a shit that our city manager is going to leverage over one million dollars to continue a redevelopment agency that only supplies free parking lots to assholes like the Arkley’s. This town is getting more corrupt everyday and some of us fucking care Fred!

  90. September 5, 2011 at 8:14 pm

…and yet you condemn folks for having opinions..

Where have I condemned folks for having opinions? I’ve simply suggested that the majority of opinions voiced on this blog- the anti- Arkley/ council majority crowd- don’t match those of the majority of people in Eureka.

Your points about expenditures at the Adorni Center are well taken, but I can’t help but think you’re one of those that think the City of Eureka should have spent millions to buy the old Jefferson School.

  91. Anonymous

We are all in serious danger when the city manager believes he can act with impunity, and yet we have allowed him to do so for years. When he gets caught Eurekans don’t seem to mind that he spends hundreds of thousands of dollars of their tax money to settle cases. They don’t mind that he operates a corrupt redevelopment agency and surrounds himself with “yes” men in city hall and on the council. Anyone who crosses him pays dearly. Of course he learned from the master and does his bidding. The last election was bought by his allies and he believes he is untouchable. Power corrupts and absolute power power corrupts absolutely. Let’s just hope the lady in the red SUV isn’t a city employee that will cost the city more money down the road ala Hansen. Let’s hope Patty is the only one that has to worry, yet again, about who the other woman is and whether she needs to go see her doc for a few tests, yet again.

I call BULLSHIT, why didn’t the observer walk up to the SUV with cell phone in hand taking pictures or video recording?

Scared? Would have been better than this cowardly insinuating

This post definitely fits the description of “insinuating” and I would add, salacious. And just plain gossipy.

I hate to say it, but it reminds me a little bit of the tone of the thankfully-defunct “Above the Law” blog. Ick.

Heraldo is laughing his head off at you fools.

No facts, no proof and no substance. Just another excuse for the crazies and sickos here to go after David Tyson.

Grownups criticise those they disagree with on substantive issues. They attack the other person’s stand on the issues.

Immature children post nasty personal attacks on personal issue rumors.

If he was just smoking a joint with the woman in the red SUV well then I guess it’s OK? Funny how he looked over his shoulder like he was guilty. Oh wait, others get busted for that same thing.

Mitch, the point is: if this happened, it shows a huge lack of ethics in his/her personal life and does this lack of ethics carry over into his/her professional life? If this is a public official those decisions effect tens of thousands of us.

If he (or she) was a public official. For all we know it’s the captain of a bowling team.

Heraldo has sunk much lower than this before.

You should all know by now that Heraldo and the truth are not synonymous. By leaving out the names he protects himself from being caught in another lie.

Ummm. What would be the point of lying?

If a post like this was made on the Humboldt Mirror and directed towards someone in the “progressive’s” favor- Larry Glass, for instance- those on this list having fun right now would be outraged. They’d be crying foul and that humbug shouldn’t be getting involved in people’s personal business.

But, since the insinuation is about one of the other side, it’s ok. I see it all the time.

How would we know it was about Larry Glass? How do you know that this post isn’t about Larry Glass? For that matter, how do I know it isn’t about you, Fred? Don’t you drive a red SUV?

I have to admit, I’ll probably be looking at red SUV’s in Eureka a little differently for awhile.

I don’t think Jeff Leonard had this activity in mind with his vision of the skatepark. In essence, it’s now become part of the city manager’s extended playground. Dave might as well just go with the smoking jacket and pipe at city hall. Skate and Destroy, Dave!

You know, as I was driving to work this morning, it occurred to me – this guy had an affair in a car? Is he a teenager? Did they buy burgers at a drive-in and head up to “Make Out Point?”

  118. tra
    September 8, 2011 at 11:01 am

Of course there’s no actual evidence that the subjects of this post were “having an affair,” or for that matter doing anything else inappropriate.

All we have is an anonymous report that two people (who are not identified but whose identities are hinted at) spent 40 minutes together in a car at lunchtime.

Beyond that it’s just a lot of sleazoidal insinuation aimed at generating a bunch of salacious speculation about what the unnamed people were doing in the car at lunchtime.

And judging by many of the comments in this thread, the post succeeded in accomplishing what it’s author apparently intended — to utilize the predictable response of anonymous commenters to identify and smear the intended target with the desired allegations of infidelity.

In crafting the smear so carefully (not directly naming names, but providing clear hints that will encourage the anonymous commenters to identify the target), the anonymous author demonstrates their proficiency in the Dark Art of political mudslinging.

So, my congratulations on your mudslinging skills…and my condolences for your lack of ethics.

  119. anon
    September 8, 2011 at 11:18 am

That the allegations relative to David and his adventures with the opposite sex have merit is really not even questionable. David’s friends all know it’s true, so does his wife, Murl knew it, the previous chief knew it was true, Rex Bohn knows it’s true, Pam the previous assistant knows it’s true as do most of the city hall and PD exployees. He has a long and sordid history, some of which came out in the Hansen depo (more would have come out in a trial, no doubt, thus the settlement).
So save your chastising about mudslinging and use your energy to come to terms with the fact that this city manager pretty much runs the show, and will do what and who he wants when he wants, as it has been for the last decade.

Anon 11:18AM is spot on. This particular saga so well known it’s sickening. The track record speaks for itself- despicable. Worse yet, there are innocent victims in their wake. Question is: at what point does the City Mgr’s integrity get on the political hot plate so blatantly much that the council has no choice but to do something. At what point will the council understand that he is such a liability to the city that they have to do something? How many lawsuits and settlements will it take before All citizens become a collective angry mob and force the council’s hand? What (or whom) does a guy have to do to get fired? If I’m Big Wave Dave, I’m trembling come time for open mike at the next city council meeting.

    11:18,

No evidence has been offered that anything inappropriate actually took place during the lunchtime meeting described by the anonymous author of this post. Yet the alleged incident is described in such an insinuating way as to imply wrongdoing, specifically infidelity and an inappropriate workplace relationship.

As far as what supposedly “everyone knows” around City Hall, I’m not around City Hall, so I can’t comment on that other than to say that from the outside, it just looks like gossip — maybe true, maybe not true, but unproven, and not really any of my business one way or the other.

anon sounds alot like a disaffected former employee. This quote in particular

“That the allegations relative to David and his adventures with the opposite sex have merit is really not even questionable. Everything Anon 11:18 & 11:21 is true and well known here at City Hall.

  126. Eric Kirk
    September 8, 2011 at 1:11 pm

Whatever is “well known,” I do agree that if you’re going to be pointing fingers at someone in particular, you ought to put your name to the accusation. And that’s assuming that a theoretical affair which is not on work site is anybody’s business anyway (outside of those involved and their families). The original post was kind of amusing because it didn’t name anybody. But in my opinion, posters should refrain from actually posting names if they are going to remain anonymous, and actually, even if they are not. At minimum put a name to your accusations.

To the extent that the thread has evolved to attack an individual, I think it’s extremely inappropriate. Even if the allegations were true. And especially if they are not, or mere speculation.

Just my opinion, for what it’s worth.

  127. tra
    September 8, 2011 at 1:12 pm

Even if that was true, “insider,” it would not justify the nature of the original post at the top of this page. It’s still a sleazy smear, not to mention a creepy invasion of privacy.

I basically agree with everything you said at 1:11, Eric, except that I didn’t find the original post “amusing,” in the first place, because it seemed pretty clear to me that it was intended precisely to “evolve into an attack on an individual.”

In my opinion, Heraldo undercuts his credibility when he stoops to this kind of stuff. But it’s his blog, and so it’s his prerogative to decide whether to operate at that level or not. I just hope that at least the ugly personal smears remain a fairly rare exception among plenty of more productive and informative posts.
